Chapter 9 - Chapter 08: Repent

The Throne Hall

Clara stood in front of her parents once more, this time, her head slightly bowed. The heavy silence of the room was far more suffocating than the deep-sea pressure outside.

Queen Haisly sat silently, her fingers tapping the side of her throne, her silver hair shimmering like moonlight against the dark coral. King Orion's face was tight with worry and disappointment. He looked less like a King and more like a terrified father.

"You what ?" he asked, his deep voice low and sharp, vibrating through the water. "You froze your guards and tried to enter the Forbidden Zone ?"

"I just wanted to see what was making the noise," Clara said, her voice small but determined. "There's a ship there. I've never seen anything like it. What if it's connected to the disappearing fish ?"

"You could've been captured ! Seen by those earth creatures! Or worse, killed !" the King thundered, his trident sparking with a flash of gold. "Clara, we are facing an invisible plague and vanishing schools of fish. Now is the time to lead with your head, not your curiosity ! You are the future Queen, yet you act like a hatchling chasing bubbles ! You must think before acting this way !"

"The Forbidden Zone is forbidden for a reason," Queen Haisly added gently but firmly. Her eyes were fixed on Clara, filled with a sternness that made Clara flinch. "Even I wouldn't go without protection. And those guards you left like ice statues ? Go now and unfreeze them."

Clara looked up, her fingers trembling. "I... I didn't mean to leave them that long."

"Do it," the Queen commanded. "A Queen never misuses her powers like this. Magic is a tool for healing and protection, not a toy to bypass your responsibilities."

Clara nodded slowly. With a quick, guilty flick of her fingers, the silver energy she had cast earlier snapped. Miles away at the border, the guards gasped as life returned to their limbs, their tridents drifting for a moment before they regained their balance.

"I'm sorry," Clara whispered.

"Sorry does not change the danger you could have invited," the King said, his voice softening but remaining stern. "Go to your room, Clara. Reflect on what it means to be a ruler. You cannot save a kingdom if you cannot even follow the laws meant to protect you." The King waved his hand. "You're dismissed."

Clara turned and slowly swam out of the throne hall, her heart sinking like a stone into the dark sand.

Back in her room at the Grooter, Clara dropped onto her pearl-silk bed and let out a long sigh. The soft glow of jellyfish lanterns lit the space gently, but the mood was far from light. As she sat there, the weight of her parents' scolding and the guilt in her heart began to manifest in her very being. Slowly, her shimmering pink hair began to shift, the bright pink color fading into a dull, muddy grey, the true color of disappointment.

A knock came.

Mini swam in first, followed by Pebs. "Hey…" Mini said softly, his eyes full of concern.

"We brought you a kelp bun," Pebs offered, holding out a squishy snack. In his other fin, he carried a handful of sweet sea-grapes and a glowing nectar-filled shell to help cheer her up.

Clara chuckled sadly. "Thanks, you two."

Mini perched on his fin while Pebs floated above her mirror. "Why did you really want to go up there ?"

Clara looked at both of them. "Because I can feel it. Something's not right, I don't want to sit on a throne while danger grows outside my palace."

"You have a brave heart," Mini said sweetly.

"And a wild brain," Pebs added with a smirk.

Clara threw a pillow at him. "I know."

The three laughed for a moment before the room turned quiet again. The heavy silence was broken by the sliding of the coral doors. Oceana, swam in carrying a massive stack of heavy, leather-bound books.

"Your Highness, these are from the King and Queen," Oceana announced, dropping them onto the sponge-table with a heavy thud.

Clara drifted over, reading the titles with a growing sense of dread. The Guardian's Path, How to Use Your Powers Safely.

The Royal Code, 1,001 Palace Rules and A History of the Seven Trenches.

"I can't read all this !" Clara whined, her eyes filling with tears. "I'll fall asleep before I even open the second page ! This is a prison sentence !"

Oceana laughed, her tentacles waving dismissively. "Oh, stop the theatrics. Even your sister Shelly reads a book bigger than this one in a week. If you ever want to come out of your room, you will read every word."

Clara let out a long, dramatic sigh and finally agreed. Once Oceana left, Mini looked at the books curiously. "Can't you just use your powers to put all that information directly into your head ?"

Clara laughed and shook her head. "I could do that, but it would also mean I'm misusing my powers again. I'd just get another lecture."

However, as she stared at the boring cover of the rulebook, an idea sparked. She flicked her fingers, casting a shimmering spell over the pages. "Instead of reading, let's watch. I'll turn this into a show !"

Suddenly, the words lifted off the paper, glowing and spinning until they transformed into a vivid, moving movie in the center of the room.

"Done !" Clara giggled. She settled back onto her bed with her seaweed snacks, watching the palace rules play out like an exciting adventure film while she munched away. Her hair turned back to pink as her good mood was back again.

"I just… I don't want to make the same mistake again," Clara whispered between bites.

Mini nudged her. "Then trust your instincts. You were born for this."

Pebs nodded. "But maybe… no more paralyzing guards ?"

Clara smiled. "Deal."
