The Abyssal Core
Clara swam into the vast library, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer scale of the chamber. She looked at the huge, coral-encrusted doors and the way this place was guarded. Dozens of elite sentinels stood right at the entrance, their grips firm on shimmering spears and serrated swords.
She wondered why the guards would be protecting books this much. It's just a library with books, right ? she thought. With a soft sigh, she swam toward the threshold and to her surprise, every single guard snapped to attention and bowed deeply for her.
"Please go on, Your Highness," the lead guard murmured.
She bowed back tentatively before the huge doors groaned open. She swam inside, her breath catching at the sight of her father. He was standing beneath a massive, glowing orb that illuminated the dark water, holding a large, leather-bound book. The weight of the room felt heavy, filled with the scent of ancient parchment and salt.
She bowed deeply. "Father."
"Clara," he said, his voice echoing off the high stone arches. He looked at her, then back at the book, his expression unreadable. "Do you know why you're grounded ?"
"Because… I went to the forbidden side and froze my guards into statues ?"
"No," he said quietly, closing the book with a soft thud. "Because you don't understand the danger yet." Clara looked up, confused by the sadness in his eyes. Her father sat down, looking into the swirling light of the glowing orb.
"Two hundred lunar cycles ago, this kingdom was attacked. By humans. They came with weapons and fire, tearing through our waters to hunt us like prey. Your grandmother and grandfather, the former King and Queen... they sacrificed themselves to protect us."
Clara's lips parted, her heart sinking. "Why would humans do that ?"
"Because they are curious and dangerous. They do not see the soul beneath the scales, Clara. They see us as trophies, not people."
Clara's heart pounded against her ribs. "But how did they find us ? We are so deep."
"Because of Arora," Orion said, his jaw tightening. "Haisly's sister. The woman I was once promised to marry."
Clara gasped, her tail giving a sudden, nervous flick. "You were what ?!"
He nodded solemnly. "Before I chose Haisly, yes. I was betrothed to Arora. My father wanted to form an alliance with the Obsidian Trench ocean, so a marriage was the best way to do that. But after visiting that place for the first time, I saw Haisly. She was taking care of a hurt whale, looking so beautiful and kind that I fell in love instantly. On the other side, Arora was… ambitious. She was beautiful, yes, but not like your mother.
Your mother is kind, sweet and loving, just like you. Arora was focused only on being a Queen and ruling over the seven oceans. I didn't love her at all. I was the crown prince, the heir to the throne, but I had to choose for myself. When I chose to marry Haisly, she became the crown princess, and Arora grew bitter. She swore to destroy this kingdom and disappeared."
He paused, the memory clouding his gaze. "My father supported me, of course, because he saw the darkness in Arora's heart. She didn't have the soul to be a ruler of people. So I had to let her go. After our marriage, we stayed happily ever after for a time. But then, a year later, Arora returned with humans, guiding them directly to our palace."
Clara's voice trembled. "I've heard pieces of this story before... wait. Is that... is that Malaika ?"
"Yes," the King sighed. "After the humans attacked us, things were really bad. Fish were dying, our people were being captured and put into those terrible glass things. Arora tried to take the Ocean Heart. With it, she knew she could take over all seven oceans.
Whoever holds the Heart must be respected, everyone is forced to bow to that person. But before she could reach it, my father took it. He used his own life-force to save us. In a burst of ancient magic, everything reversed. The humans were sent back to their land with no memory of us. But that required so much power that my father died."
Clara's eyes filled with tears as she listened to the tragedy of her lineage.
"Arora got angry and attacked us again," King Orion continued. "My mother used her own soul to seal her away. Using the Ocean Heart, she banned Arora from the seven oceans and stripped her of her mermaid powers. Now, Arora has taken a new name. She calls herself Malaika..... It means Death. Rumors say she still lingers out there in the dark trenches, an outcast who cannot enter any kingdom. Only the royal blood of the Aquaria kingdom can ever bring her back."
Clara swallowed hard, the weight of her heritage feeling like lead. "But how did she even bring humans here ?"
"Because she knew the palace's weak spots. And she knew our secrets. You see, when in great need, a mermaid can take a human form only once in a lifetime. Long ago, princess Annamira was the first to set foot on land and live between two worlds. She believed in peace.
She even fell in love with a human man, so since she was connected to the ocean heart too, she gave every mermaid this power. To set foot in the human world, but only once. She knew if everyone had the power to live in this two worlds, it might end up bringing trouble to our kingdoms and everyone won't be controllable anymore." he sighed.
"But after the Great War, we built the barrier. No human can ever find our kingdom now. Humans and sea creatures can never live as one. We are sworn enemies, for they have destroyed thousands of our people. It is our duty to keep our people safe and ensure no human ever leaves our waters alive if they stumble upon us."
Clara paled, the reality of the war-torn past settling over her.
"Which is why," King Orion said, standing up tall, "you must think carefully. Always."
Clara whispered, "Is that why I have… the powers I do ? Because of the war ?"
King Orion turned slowly, his eyes glowing with a strange pride. "Yes. You were chosen for a reason. The power within you is rare, tied to the ancient Heart of Liraen. Your necklace channels it, but you hold more than you know. Before my father, Annamira was the only one who could touch the Heart of Liraen without pain.
After her, it was my great-grandfather, then my grandmother, then my father. And now... only you can. All your mother and I did was keep it safe, but now you must learn to use it. Use it to set peace, to guide us and to rule."
"What kind of powers ?" she asked, her voice small.
King Orion walked to a glowing pedestal at the far end of the room. "Control over any sea creatures, fish, whales, mermaids, sirens, sharks, anything you desire. Water manipulation. Light and darkness. The Ocean's Voice, where your words bend the sea itself.
Soulglow, the ability to bring calm to the dying. Tear of Revival, to restore lost memories. Time Tides, to bend moments of time. Mirrorflin Shift, to hide your true form. Healink, a deep emotional connection to all living things. And Aquaflame… the rarest power of all, born from pain and love. It can do anything you want it to. You simply think of it, and it happens."
He looked at her intensely. "The one thing special about you, Clara, is that you are one with the Ocean Heart. The others were just protectors of it. But you.... You're like Annamira, it listens to you. Your soul is bounded with it."
Clara was silent for a long time. Finally, she asked, "Why me ?"
He touched her shoulder gently. "Like your mother said dear, it is because you feel deeply. And that, my daughter, is strength. You were born for it. When your mother and I combined our magic into the special birth shell, it showed only one baby. You grew inside a magical pearl in a special nursery. When the lunar cycles were complete, the pearl cracked open and you swam out earlier than expected.
A great light filled the palace. You were born with the mark, and the sea creatures were already gathered, bowing for you. We didn't even know why. And then, Kelly came out too. We realized then that you were twins, but you were the one the ocean called for. More like the ocean have birth to you itself."
He turned and swam to a hidden wall, pressing a glowing glyph. The wall parted, revealing a pulsing, heart-shaped crystal. It hung in the air, glowing with an ethereal light. It was large, yet small enough to fit into two hands, but the power radiating from it made the very water vibrate.
"This," he said reverently, "is the Core of Tidera. The living heart of our oceans."
Clara gasped. "It's… beautiful."
"It shields us. If this ever falls into evil hands…" He didn't finish the sentence, the implication clear. "You must learn how to protect it. Shrink it. Hide it in your crown, your necklace, or even within your own spirit. Promise me, Clara, you must always make the right choices. Once you grow up and choose a mate, your husband will gain access to this power through your bond. You must think of the seven oceans first."
"I promise, Father. I'll always protect our oceans and do what's right. I'll protect us from the humans too," she whispered, her resolve hardening.
"I know you will." Her father leaned down and kissed her forehead sweetly.
"Now... can I touch it ? I promise I won't misuse it !" she exclaimed, her youthful curiosity returning.
King Orion laughed softly before nodding. Clara swam forward, reaching out to touch the crystal. The moment her fingers brushed the surface, it glowed a vibrant, deep pink, reacting to her emotions. She smiled as a wave of power washed over her.
Her purple tail shimmered and turned a brilliant, pure white, her hair followed suit, flowing around her like silk. A beautiful, veil-like dress of woven water formed around her. She gasped, looking at her reflection in the polished stone floor.
"That is your true Queen form," her father chuckled, looking on in awe. "It seems the Heart of the Ocean has accepted you as its master. It is revealing its true power to you."
As she let go of the Heart, the light faded and she returned to her usual purple and pink hues. Together, they swam out of the secret chamber.
Before exiting the library, King Orion handed Clara an ancient royal book. It contained everything known about the Heart of the Ocean and the prophecy of the one born with the silver moon mark. The past about Annamira too, first holder and protector of the ocean heart. "Study this. Master the spells within. The pages appear empty and blank to most, but since you are the chosen one, I believe you will see what is written."
Clara nodded solemnly and began the swim back to her room, clutching the book to her chest.
Just then, Queen Haisly approached King Orion, her face etched with concern. "How did it go ?" she asked worriedly. She knew Clara was still young and her reckless curiosity often led her into danger.
"She understands now," he replied, watching his daughter disappear down the corridor. "She knows her role and I am certain she will do her duty well."
As the two stood in the quiet of the hallway, a guard suddenly burst through the library doors, his face pale and his breath coming in ragged bursts. "Your Majesty ! To the court ! Urgent summons !"
