The word didn't fade.
"Key."
It lingered in the air, heavier than anything the fragment had said before.
Darius's eyes darkened instantly. His body shifted slightly, placing himself more firmly between Lyra and the fragment.
"No," he said coldly. "She's not anything to you."
The fragment didn't react to him immediately. Its gaze stayed on Lyra, steady, focused, almost certain.
Lyra felt it again. That pull. Stronger now. Not forcing her. Not controlling her. But recognizing something inside her that answered back.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice calm but firm.
This time, the fragment responded without hesitation.
"Open."
The single word sent a ripple through her chest.
Darius noticed instantly. "Don't answer that."
Lyra didn't look away from the fragment. "I'm not answering. I'm understanding."
"That's how it starts," Darius said, his voice tightening. "It talks, you listen, then it takes more."
"It's not taking anything," she replied quietly.
But even as she said it, the energy inside her shifted again.
The fragment took a step closer.
Darius moved at the same time. Blocking. Always blocking.
"Stop coming closer," he warned, his voice low and dangerous.
For a moment, the fragment actually paused.
Not because of fear.
Because it was considering him.
Then it spoke again.
"To reach… must pass."
Darius's expression hardened. "Try it."
Silence fell again, thick and tense.
Lyra exhaled slowly. "This isn't just about me."
Darius didn't look at her. "It is right now."
"It said open," she continued. "That means something is still sealed. Something bigger than this fragment."
"That doesn't mean you're the one to open it."
"It already chose me."
That hit harder than she expected.
Darius finally turned to her. "Then it chose wrong."
For a second, neither of them spoke.
The tension between them shifted. Not anger. Not distance. Something else.
Something that felt like fear wrapped too tightly around care.
Behind him, the fragment watched the exchange carefully.
Learning.
Then it moved again.
But this time
Not forward.
It raised its hand slowly.
And the ground beneath them responded.
A low vibration spread outward, deeper than before. Older.
The temple itself reacted.
Cracks of dark energy spread briefly across the stone floor then vanished just as quickly.
Lyra's breath caught.
"It's not just calling me…" she whispered.
Darius's gaze snapped back to the fragment. "What is it doing?"
Her eyes widened slightly.
"It's trying to show me."
The fragment's voice came again, more stable now, almost complete.
"Remember."
And suddenly
Images flashed through Lyra's mind.
Not her memories.
Not fully.
A door. Massive. Sealed in silver and shadow.
Chains wrapped around it.
And something behind it
Breathing.
Waiting.
Lyra staggered slightly.
Darius caught her immediately. "Lyra."
Her grip tightened on him.
"It's not just a fragment," she said, her voice unsteady now. "It's part of something that was broken on purpose."
A pause.
Her eyes slowly lifted back to the fragment.
"And I think… I'm the one who locked it away."
Silence.
Even the fragment stilled at that.
Darius's voice dropped. "That's not possible."
Lyra didn't respond immediately.
Because deep down
It didn't feel impossible.
It felt familiar.
