Chapter 62 - Chapter 64:The Obstacle

The word settled into the air.

"Obstacle."

Darius didn't flinch. If anything, his stance hardened, his body shifting slightly in front of Lyra like a shield that refused to break.

Lyra felt it too. That change. The fragment had finally acknowledged him.

But not as a threat.

As something in the way.

Darius let out a slow breath. "Good," he said quietly. "Now you see me."

The fragment's form flickered, shadows tightening around it. Its ember eyes studied him for the first time, not with fear, not with anger.

With calculation.

Then it moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

The ground beneath it cracked as it closed the distance in an instant, its hand reaching forward not toward Darius

But toward Lyra.

Darius reacted immediately. He intercepted, catching the strike mid motion. This time it didn't pass through.

This time

It connected.

The impact sent a shockwave through the ground, cracking the stone beneath their feet.

For a split second, everything froze.

Darius's hand locked with the fragment's shifting form, energy clashing violently between them.

And then pain hit.

Sharp. Sudden.

Darius's jaw tightened as a dark energy surged up his arm, trying to force its way into him.

Lyra saw it instantly. "Darius let go"

But he didn't.

Instead, his grip tightened.

"You think I'll just stand here and watch you reach for her" his voice dropped, rough with strain. "You picked the wrong person to ignore"

The fragment tilted its head slightly, almost curious.

Then it pushed.

Hard.

Darius was forced back a step, his feet dragging against the ground, but he didn't release it.

Not once.

Behind him, Lyra felt something shift inside her. Not fear. Not panic.

Something deeper.

The shadow within her responded

Not to the fragment

But to him.

"Stop" she said, her voice suddenly stronger, cutting through the tension.

Both of them felt it.

The fragment paused.

Darius stilled.

Lyra stepped forward slowly. This time, she didn't hide behind him.

But she didn't let him go either.

Her hand moved

And gently

She touched his arm.

The moment she did, the dark energy trying to consume him faltered.

Then weakened.

Then stopped.

Darius's eyes flickered slightly, surprised.

Lyra's gaze shifted to the fragment. Calm. Steady.

"You don't get to decide what he is," she said quietly.

A pause.

Her aura flared

Silver and black, balanced, controlled.

"And you don't get to call him an obstacle."

The air changed instantly.

The fragment stilled completely now, its form stabilizing more than before, as if reacting to her power.

Watching her.

Learning her.

Then slowly

It withdrew its hand from Darius's grip.

No attack.

No resistance.

Just… acceptance.

Darius didn't relax. Not even a little. His eyes stayed locked on it, his body still between it and Lyra, even now.

Lyra noticed.

And for a brief second

Her lips curved slightly.

Then the fragment spoke again.

Clearer than ever.

Stronger than before.

"Not obstacle…"

A pause.

Its gaze shifted between them.

Then settled back on Lyra.

"Key."
