Three passenger buses occupied the east lane. A water-service truck waited at the center signal. Two freight trams shared the west rail under separate dispatch keepers. The road crossed a buried main serving four industrial blocks and one public clinic.
The first bus carried twenty-six people, the second thirty-one, and the third twenty-two. Forty-three occupied the front freight tram. The rear tram was empty. Three workers rode the water truck, and six road workers held the loop. One hundred thirty-one current people stood inside the route the body had chosen to eat.
The body put its collarbone mouth against the pavement.
Asphalt rose in one piece.
The east lane folded into the mouth with lane paint, drain covers, and the front axle of the first bus. Its driver opened both doors before the floor tilted. Twenty-six passengers climbed toward the rear while the axle disappeared beneath gray teeth.
