Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Truth in Chaos

The walls trembled faintly as another explosion echoed above. Dust fell from the ceiling, and the dim lights flickered. Amara flinched, her heart racing. This place isn't safe either she whispered.

No place is, he replied.

His calmness made it worse.

A sudden noise came from deeper within the passage fast footsteps approaching.

Amara stiffened.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

Then

A figure appeared.

Breathing hard.

The young man.

Relief hit Amara instantly. "You're okay

Not now, he cut in, his voice sharp. They're inside. Not just the outer grounds. Someone let them in.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

An insider, Amara murmured.

The two men exchanged a brief look.

That alone confirmed it.

We don't have time, the young man continued. They're searching for something.

Amara's chest tightened. Something?

His eyes shifted to her.

Then away.

Too quickly.

She noticed.

No," she said slowly. "Not something.

Her voice dropped.

Someone.

Silence.

Her heart skipped.

No, she whispered, stepping back slightly. You don't mean

They do, the mafia boss said.

Her breath caught.

For you.

The world seemed to stop.

Amara stared at him, her mind struggling to process it. Why? she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Why would anyone attack this place for me?

No one answered immediately.

That silence felt louder than the explosions above.

Then the young man spoke, quieter now.

Because of who you are.

Her brows furrowed. I'm nobody.

That's what you think, he replied.

Amara shook her head, confusion turning into frustration. Then explain it to me! Stop talking in circles!

Her voice echoed slightly in the narrow space.

For once

She didn't care.

A long pause followed.

Then

The mafia boss stepped forward.

Close.

Serious

Years ago, he began, a deal was made.

Amara's chest tightened.

My family? she asked.

Yes.

He held her gaze.

But it wasn't just about money.

Her breath slowed.

What was it about, then?

Another explosion echoed faintly.

Time was running out.

Power, he said.

The word sent a chill through her.

There are groups, he continued, that have been watching waiting for the right moment.

Amara's mind raced. And that moment is now?

Yes.

She swallowed hard. Because of me?

A pause.

Then

Yes.

Her hands trembled slightly.

I don't understand. I'm just a girl.

The young man let out a quiet breath.

No, he said. You're proof.

Amara blinked. Proof of what?

Another silence.

This one heavier than the rest.

The mafia boss's voice dropped.

Proof that the deal went through.

Her heart skipped.

What deal? she whispered.

But before he could answer

The door behind them shook violently.

A loud impact echoed.

Once.

Twice.

They found us, one of the guards said urgently.

Everything shifted again.

Back to chaos.

Back to danger.

Move, the mafia boss ordered.

The hidden passage wasn't safe anymore.

Amara's pulse raced as they rushed deeper inside, the sound of forced entry growing louder behind them.

Her thoughts spun wildly.

Proof? Deal? Power?

None of it made sense.

But one thing did.

This wasn't about her family anymore.

This was something much bigger.

Something planned.

Something dangerous.

As they turned another corner, Amara grabbed his arm suddenly.

"Wait!"

He stopped.

Turned.

Her eyes locked onto his.

Fear.

Confusion.

But also

Determination.

You're going to tell me everything, she said. No more secrets.

A loud crash echoed behind them.

The door had given way.

He looked at her for a long second.

Then nodded once.

If we get out of this alive.

Her chest tightened.

But she didn't look away.

Deal.

For the first time

They were no longer standing on opposite sides.

Behind them

Footsteps closed in.

Fast.

Relentless.

And ahead

Only darkness waited.
