Chapter 16 - Chapter 26: Blood That Remembers

The footsteps behind them didn't stop.

They multiplied.

Echoing through the narrow passage like a warning that refused to fade.

Amara's breathing grew uneven as she struggled to keep up. The man ahead of her moved quickly, confidently—like he knew every twist and turn of the maze. His grip on her wrist was firm, unyielding.

"Faster," he said.

"I'm trying," she replied, her voice strained.

Another turn. Then another.

The air changed.

Cooler.

Still.

And then—

They stepped into a wide, hidden chamber.

Amara nearly stumbled as he finally let go of her.

The space around them was vast, circular… and quiet.

Too quiet.

Faint symbols lined the walls, glowing softly like they had been waiting. Waiting for something.

For her.

Amara swallowed. "Where are we…?"

"A place they won't reach easily," he answered.

She turned slowly, taking it all in. The markings weren't random. They pulsed—faint, rhythmic… almost like a heartbeat.

Her heartbeat.

Her chest tightened.

Why does this place feel…" she hesitated, pressing a hand against her chest.

"Familiar?"

Her eyes snapped to him.

He was watching her carefully now.

Not just watching.

Studying.

Amara frowned. "What is this place?"

A sanctuary," he said. "Or what's left of one."

That doesn't explain anything."

No," he agreed. "It doesn't."

Frustration rose quickly. "Then start explaining! Ever since this started, people have been chasing me, attacking me, acting like I'm some kind of—"

you are."

The words cut through her.

Clean.

Sharp.

Silence filled the space between them.

Amara shook her head. "No. I'm not anything special."

You activated the seal."

I don't even know what that means!"

And yet," he said quietly, "your blood does.

Her chest tightened again.

Stronger this time.

Painful.

She gasped slightly, her knees weakening.

"Hey—"

He stepped forward, but stopped when she raised a hand.

I'm fine…

She wasn't.

Something was wrong.

No—

Something was waking up.

The symbols on the walls flickered.

Then brightened.

Amara's breath hitched.

What's happening?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because he already knew.

The light from the walls began to move.

Not randomly.

But toward her.

Amara stepped back. "Wait—what is that?!"

Don't fight it," he said firmly.

Don't fight—? Are you serious?!"

The light reached her.

And then—

It touched her skin.

Her body froze.

Her eyes widened.

And suddenly—

She wasn't in the chamber anymore.

Darkness.

Then—

Flashes.

Voices.

Screams.

Fire.

A woman stood in the flames.

Her eyes glowed the same way the symbols did.

Bright.

Unnatural.

Powerful.

They must never take her."

The voice echoed.

Desperate.

Protective.

A man beside her turned, his expression grim. "If they find out what she carries—"

They already will," the woman cut in.

Her gaze shifted.

Straight forward.

At Amara.

Amara's breath caught.

Me?"

The woman stepped closer.

"You are not just blood."

Her voice softened.

You are a key."

Everything shattered.

Amara gasped as she dropped to her knees, back in the chamber. Her entire body trembled violently.

The light faded.

The symbols dimmed.

Silence returned.

What…" her voice shook, "what was that?

He watched her carefully.

Memory," he said.

She looked up at him, eyes wide, shaken.

That wasn't mine.

No, he replied. "It was theirs."

Her hands clenched against the ground.

My parents?

A pause.

Then—

Yes.

Her chest tightened painfully.

They're dead.

I know.

Then how

Because some things don't die," he said quietly. "Not when they're bound by blood."

Amara's mind spun.

A key… what does that even mean?"

It means," he said, his voice lowering, what's inside you… opens something."

Fear crept in.

Cold.

Unsettling.

Opens what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth—

Was worse than she was ready for.

Before he could speak—

A sound echoed through the chamber.

Not footsteps this time.

Something else.

Heavier.

Slower.

They both turned.

At the entrance.

A shadow stretched across the floor.

Then—

A figure stepped into the light.

Amara's breath caught.

Her heart dropped.

No way

Bruised.

Breathing hard.

But standing.

The young man.

He wiped blood from the corner of his mouth and gave a faint, tired smirk.

"Told you…" he said, voice rough, "I don't go down that easily.

Relief crashed into her.

You're alive!

But the moment didn't last.

Because behind him—

More shadows appeared.

And this time

They weren't human.
