Chapter 49 - Chapter 49

Chapter 49

The meeting didn't end.

It shifted.

What started as questions turned into something quieter.

More careful.

Observation.

Zara could feel it in the room—the way attention lingered on her a second longer than necessary… the way certain board members exchanged looks they didn't bother to hide anymore.

Good.

Let them watch.

At the far end of the table, Vivienne Laurent hadn't spoken again.

Not once.

But that didn't mean she was quiet.

She was calculating.

Zara knew that type of silence.

It wasn't passive.

It was patient.

"And the media response?" someone asked.

Zara shifted slightly in her seat, just enough to look like she was considering.

Not already ten steps ahead.

"We continue engagement," she said. "But with tighter control."

A pause.

"Selective appearances. Limited statements."

Lucien's gaze flicked to her briefly.

She was feeding them exactly what they expected.

Measured.

Careful.

Almost… cautious.

"And the situation with Dante Moreau?" another voice pressed.

Zara didn't answer immediately.

She let the silence stretch.

Let the weight of the question sit in the room.

Then—

She exhaled softly.

"It remains strategic," she said.

A beat.

"But I acknowledge the complications."

There it was again.

Not control.

Not certainty.

Complication.

Vivienne's fingers tapped once against the table.

Barely noticeable.

But Zara saw it.

Interest.

The chairman leaned forward slightly.

"Then perhaps we should consider alternatives," he said.

The room stilled.

Lucien's posture shifted—subtle, but present.

Zara didn't react.

Not outwardly.

"Alternatives?" she repeated.

The chairman nodded.

"A contingency. Someone who can stabilize perception if necessary."

There it was.

Not a suggestion.

Not anymore.

A direction.

Zara lowered her gaze briefly, like she was processing.

Like it affected her.

Then she looked back up.

"And you have someone in mind."

Not a question.

A statement.

The chairman didn't answer immediately.

But he didn't need to.

Because all eyes—

shifted.

To Vivienne.

Of course.

Vivienne didn't smile this time.

Didn't gloat.

She just met Zara's gaze.

Calm.

Confident.

Like this had already been decided.

Zara leaned back slightly in her chair.

And for the first time—

she let a flicker of something real show.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

But awareness.

"I see," she said quietly.

Lucien's jaw tightened.

This was going further than he liked.

But he didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

Because she told him not to.

And because—

he trusted her.

Vivienne finally spoke.

"I'm not here to replace anyone," she said smoothly.

A pause.

"Only to support stability where it's needed."

Zara looked at her.

Really looked.

"You always did prefer indirect moves," she said calmly.

Vivienne's lips curved faintly.

"And you always preferred control."

A beat.

"Seems like we're both adjusting."

Silence.

Zara let that sit.

Then—

she nodded once.

"Then let's be clear," she said.

Her voice steady.

"If the board believes additional oversight is necessary…"

A pause.

"I won't oppose it."

That—

shifted everything.

Lucien's head turned slightly toward her.

Even he hadn't expected that.

Around the table, reactions flickered.

Surprise.

Relief.

Suspicion.

Vivienne's eyes narrowed just slightly.

Because that—

wasn't resistance.

And it wasn't surrender.

It was something else.

Zara folded her hands again.

"But I expect transparency," she continued.

A beat.

"And accountability."

Her gaze locked onto Vivienne.

"From everyone involved."

The room went quiet.

Because now—

this wasn't about Zara being challenged.

This was about something being set in motion.

Vivienne held her gaze.

"Of course," she said softly.

But there was something underneath it now.

Something sharper.

Zara leaned back slightly again.

Relaxed.

Composed.

Exactly what they wanted to see.

Exactly what they believed.

Lucien watched her carefully.

And then—

he saw it.

That small shift in her expression.

Barely there.

But real.

She wasn't losing control.

She was handing them just enough—

To make them think she had.

And that meant—

They were walking exactly where she wanted them.

The chairman cleared his throat.

"Then we proceed," he said.

A pause.

"Vivienne will be included moving forward."

There it was.

Official.

Locked in.

Zara nodded once.

No resistance.

No reaction.

Just acceptance.

But beneath that calm—

Everything had already changed.

Because now—

Vivienne wasn't outside anymore.

She was inside.

Exactly where Zara needed her to be.
