Chapter 48 - Chapter 48

Chapter 48

The boardroom was already full when she arrived.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

Just… tense.

Voices dropped the moment the doors opened.

Eyes followed her in.

Measured.

Curious.

Some neutral.

Some not.

Zara didn't pause.

Didn't hesitate.

She walked in like she always did—calm, composed, untouchable.

And that was the first shift.

Because today—

She wasn't supposed to look untouchable.

At the head of the table, several board members exchanged subtle glances.

To anyone else, it might have gone unnoticed.

To Zara—

It was confirmation.

Good.

She took her seat without a word.

Set her tablet down.

Folded her hands lightly.

Across the room, near the far end—

Vivienne Laurent sat like she belonged there.

That was new.

Zara's eyes flicked to her briefly.

No reaction.

No acknowledgment.

But internally—

She adjusted.

So.

It had already progressed further than expected.

A man cleared his throat.

Senior board member.

Neutral voice.

But careful eyes.

"Shall we begin?"

Zara gave a small nod.

The meeting started like any other.

Reports.

Numbers.

Performance summaries.

Controlled.

Predictable.

Then—

The shift.

"We need to address recent developments," another member said.

There it was.

Zara didn't speak.

She let the silence stretch just slightly.

"Specifically," he continued, "the public narrative surrounding your… recent affiliations."

A pause.

Zara glanced down briefly.

Then back up.

Measured.

"You mean the alliance with Dante Moreau," she said.

Direct.

No avoidance.

A few glances exchanged again.

"Yes," he said.

Zara nodded slowly.

"It was strategic," she replied.

A beat.

"Though I understand how it may appear otherwise."

That was intentional.

Lucien, seated two places away, didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

He was watching.

Just like she told him to.

Another board member leaned forward slightly.

"Appearances matter," she said. "Especially at this level."

Zara met her gaze.

"They do," she agreed.

A pause.

"And I take responsibility for that."

That—

That was unexpected.

A subtle shift moved through the room.

Vivienne's eyes narrowed slightly.

Zara saw it.

Good.

She let her shoulders relax just a fraction.

Not enough to look weak.

Just enough to look… human.

"I've handled more complex situations," Zara continued. "But this one has required… adjustments."

Another pause.

"And I'm making them."

Silence.

The board wasn't expecting this.

Not defensiveness.

Not control.

But acknowledgment.

Lucien noticed it too.

She was doing exactly what she said she would.

Not breaking.

Not slipping.

Just… bending.

Another voice spoke up.

"There are concerns," he said carefully. "About stability. Decision-making. Exposure."

Zara didn't respond immediately.

She let the words sit.

Let them exist in the room.

Then—

She nodded.

"Those concerns are valid."

That one landed harder.

Lucien's jaw tightened slightly.

But he stayed silent.

Vivienne leaned back slightly in her seat.

Watching.

Waiting.

Zara clasped her hands together lightly.

"What I can assure you," she continued, "is that none of those concerns are being ignored."

A beat.

"But I won't pretend they don't exist."

That line—

shifted something.

Because now—

They weren't questioning her.

They were listening.

One of the older members spoke again.

"And your response moving forward?"

Zara's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Controlled exposure," she said.

Lucien's eyes flicked to her.

That wasn't part of the plan he expected her to say out loud.

Zara continued.

"I intend to manage the narrative directly," she added. "Not avoid it."

A pause.

"And that includes maintaining the alliance."

There it was.

A ripple moved across the table.

Vivienne's expression stilled.

Carefully.

Too carefully.

Zara saw it.

She leaned back slightly in her chair now.

Relaxed.

Composed.

But just enough—

to look like she was holding it together.

"Is that wise?" someone asked.

Zara hesitated.

Just slightly.

Calculated.

"I believe it is necessary," she said.

Not confident.

Not absolute.

Just… enough.

Lucien watched her closely.

She was walking the line perfectly.

Not losing control.

But letting them think she might.

Another question came.

"And if it escalates further?"

Zara paused again.

Longer this time.

Then—

she said quietly—

"Then I'll adjust."

Not I'll fix it.

Not I'll control it.

Just—

I'll adjust.

The room went quiet again.

Because now—

They weren't looking at her like certainty.

They were looking at her like… possibility.

And possibility—

could be replaced.

Vivienne smiled slightly.

There it was.

Confirmation.

Exactly what she wanted.

Zara saw it.

And that—

That was all she needed.

Because in that moment—

Vivienne believed she was winning.

And that meant—

She was about to make a mistake.
