Chapter 50

The meeting ended with applause.

Polite.

Measured.

Meaningless.

Chairs slid back. Voices rose in controlled tones. Deals disguised as conversations began the moment the chairman stood.

Zara didn't move right away.

She stayed seated, fingers lightly resting on the table, eyes lowered—not in defeat, but in calculation.

Across from her, Vivienne Laurent stood with quiet confidence, already being approached by two board members.

It was happening fast.

Faster than most would expect.

Good.

Zara finally rose.

Smooth. Controlled.

Unbothered.

"Zara."

She turned slightly.

Lucien was beside her now, his voice low enough that no one else could hear.

"That went further than planned."

Zara's gaze remained forward.

"I know."

Lucien studied her carefully.

"You let them put her inside."

Zara's lips curved faintly.

"I invited her."

That answer didn't sit lightly.

Lucien's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You're sure about this."

Zara turned her head just enough to meet his gaze.

"No," she said honestly.

A pause.

"I'm certain."

That was different.

Lucien exhaled quietly.

Then nodded once.

"Then we move," he said.

Zara's eyes sharpened slightly.

"Not yet."

Lucien frowned.

"She's already positioning herself."

Zara stepped away from the table, walking toward the exit as conversations swirled around them.

"That's exactly what I want," she said.

Lucien followed.

"And when she makes her move?"

Zara didn't slow.

"She already has."

They stepped out into the corridor.

The doors closed behind them.

The noise faded.

Silence.

Lucien stopped walking.

"Then what are we waiting for?"

Zara turned to face him fully now.

"For her to believe it's working."

A pause.

Lucien watched her.

"She already does."

Zara's lips curved slightly.

"Not enough."

That answer—

was colder.

Sharper.

Lucien stepped closer.

"And when it is enough?"

Zara held his gaze.

"She'll reach."

A beat.

"And when she reaches…"

Her voice dropped.

"She'll expose what she's been hiding."

Lucien's expression hardened.

"You're betting everything on that."

Zara didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Silence settled between them.

Then—

footsteps approached.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Zara didn't turn.

She already knew.

"Impressive performance."

Vivienne Laurent stopped a few steps away, her tone smooth, almost amused.

Lucien's posture shifted instantly.

Subtle.

Protective.

Zara noticed.

But said nothing.

Instead, she turned.

"Careful," Zara replied. "You might start to sound convinced."

Vivienne smiled faintly.

"Oh, I am," she said.

A pause.

"Just not in the way you think."

Zara tilted her head slightly.

"And what way is that?"

Vivienne stepped closer.

Not invading space.

But testing it.

"That you're finally showing your limits."

Silence.

Lucien's jaw tightened.

Zara didn't react.

Instead—

she studied her.

"Everyone has limits," Zara said calmly.

Vivienne's eyes flicked briefly to Lucien.

Then back.

"Yes," she said softly.

A beat.

"Yours are just becoming visible."

That was the move.

Not direct.

Not loud.

But precise.

Zara let the silence stretch.

Then—

"Visibility isn't weakness," she said.

Vivienne's smile didn't fade.

"No," she agreed.

A pause.

"But it makes replacement easier."

There it was again.

That word.

Zara held her gaze.

"You're very confident for someone who just got invited in," she said.

Vivienne's expression sharpened slightly.

"I don't need confidence," she replied. "I need timing."

Zara's lips curved faintly.

"And you think this is it."

Vivienne didn't answer directly.

Instead—

she said—

"You should be careful, Zara."

A pause.

"Things tend to fall apart right before they're replaced."

Silence.

Lucien stepped slightly forward now.

Not blocking.

But present.

Zara noticed again.

Still—

she didn't stop him.

Vivienne's gaze flicked between them.

Taking it in.

Storing it.

"Interesting," she murmured.

Zara's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What is?"

Vivienne's smile returned.

"The way he looks at you," she said.

That—

was new.

And deliberate.

Lucien didn't react.

Zara didn't either.

At least—

not outwardly.

Vivienne tilted her head slightly.

"Careful," she added softly. "That kind of attachment complicates strategy."

Zara stepped closer now.

Slow.

Controlled.

"Only if you don't know how to use it," she said.

A beat.

Vivienne's smile faded slightly.

Just for a second.

Zara saw it.

And that—

was enough.

Because for the first time—

Vivienne wasn't completely in control.

"Enjoy your position," Zara added calmly.

A pause.

"It won't feel as secure for long."

Vivienne held her gaze.

Then smiled again.

"We'll see."

And just like that—

she turned and walked away.

Silence followed.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"She's pushing harder."

Zara nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

Lucien looked at her.

"And you're letting her."

Zara's gaze followed Vivienne's retreating figure.

"For now."

A beat.

Then—

her phone buzzed.

Zara picked it up.

Read the message.

And for the first time—

something in her expression shifted.

Not much.

But enough.

Lucien noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Zara didn't answer right away.

Then she turned the screen toward him.

A single line.

TRANSFER INITIATED — EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY REVIEW

Lucien's expression darkened instantly.

"She's moving faster than expected."

Zara's eyes hardened.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

her voice dropped.

"Which means she's getting desperate."

Lucien looked at her.

"Or confident."

Zara met his gaze.

"Same thing," she said quietly.

And this time—

there was no doubt.

The game had changed again.

And now—

It was accelerating.
