Chapter 17 - TRAINING INTENSIFIES AND SECRET REVEALED

Days in Ajeji Village moved slowly, but every one of them mattered. Ade trained like his life depended on it, always under Baba Ikuomola's sharp gaze. He pushed himself beyond limits, learning to control not just light and shadow, but his own reactions, instincts, even the way he saw and felt the world.

Every morning, he tore through the forest trails until his legs screamed for mercy. By afternoon he'd be hunched in concentration, shaping his inner energy, twisting together light and shadow, forcing them to work as one. Evening found him sitting quietly by the River of Shadows, eyes closed, fighting off the whispering voices in his head.

"You've got control now," Baba Ikuomola told him one day as Ade balanced beams of light and shadow in his palms, steady as stone. "But control's only the start. You need to know who you're up against. Their tricks. Their weaknesses. That's how you finish this for good."

Ade wiped sweat from his forehead. "I get it, but how am I supposed to know what they're planning next?"

Baba Ikuomola's eyes got darker, older. "They're predictable. they care about power, and it trips them up. They don't see human strength coming. They forget about hope. That's your opening."

Ade hesitated. "And the red-eyed one? The Keeper of Shadows?"

Baba's voice lowered. "You need to know something. The Keeper isn't leading them alone. There are others out there, old Night People who've never shown themselves in our world. But they're watching. Waiting. And they know about you."

A chill ran through Ade's chest. "They know me?"

Baba nodded. "Your father's blood ties you to both worlds. That makes you a beacon. You can call them or drive them away. Why do you think the Keeper came before? And it's coming back, stronger this time."

Ade's teeth clenched. "Stronger…"

"Yes, but not unbeatable," Baba said gently. "You have something they don't."

Ade looked up, wary. "What is it?"

Baba Ikuomola leaned closer. "Your father kept secrets about his bloodline. There's power in you that's never woken before. It won't come out unless you accept the darkness inside, and let it fuse completely with your light."

Ade's hands trembled. "There's… shadow in me?"

Baba nodded again. "You can't fight it or shove it away. Take it in—you'll become more than a man, more than a bridge. You'll be something the Night People can't touch."

Ade stared at the horizon, where the sun slipped behind tall trees, stretching shadows across the village. "And if I can't do it?"

Baba's voice didn't waver. "Then everything you love is gone. The village, your mother and everyone."

Ade's fists tightened. Wind rustled the leaves, swirling around him like it could feel his determination.

"I won't lose," he whispered. "I won't let them hurt anyone again. I'll control this power, no matter how hard it gets."

Baba Ikuomola nodded, a hint of pride in his eyes. "Then we begin the next test."

The Awakening Trial

Later, with the moon shining on the River of Shadows, Ade faced the final test. He sat in stillness while the whispering voices grew louder, sharper, almost sweet. Shadow moved inside him like a living thing, trying to claim him.

"Give in," one voice urged. "Swallow your power. Be unstoppable…"

Ade's hands flared with light, and he forced the shadow back with sheer will. "No," he muttered. "I'm in charge, not you. You serve me now."

The shadow lashed back, trying to swallow him whole. Ade shut his eyes, focused on memories that mattered his mother's laughter, Baba Ikuomola's guidance, the villagers who believed in him.

Something inside him clicked. Light and shadow locked together. Not fighting anymore but moving as one. Ade's whole body glowed, pulsing with a light so bright it almost hurt to see.

He opened his eyes. They shone both dark and bright, perfectly balanced. Calm. Ready.

"I did it," he murmured.

Baba Ikuomola approached, awe plain on his face. "You've unleashed your full power. You're not just the bridge anymore. You're a force they can't ignore."

Ade nodded, feeling that weight and wildness rush through him. He could sense everything shifting. The Night People would come back. The Keeper of Shadows would come back. And next time, this wasn't just training.

Next time, it would be war.
