The night swallowed Ajeji Village whole. Only the moonlight glinting off the River of Shadows offered any relief from the darkness.
Ade waited in the middle of the village square, energy flaring around him. Light and shadow twisted together across his skin, almost like they were holding their breath too. The whole place felt tense, like everyone sensed something big was chasing down the dawn.
Baba Ikuomola knelt nearby, adjusting his quiver with hands that didn't shake. "This is it, Ade. The Keeper's here. And it's not alone."
Ade nodded, a heavy chill settling over him. Destiny pressed down hard, but he didn't flinch. "I'm ready. I've trained, I've awakened everything inside me… It ends tonight."
A cold breeze swept through. Shadows peeled up from the ground, drifting like smoke. Shapes formed hundreds of them and red eyes burning in the night.
The Night People had come back. This time, they looked faster and even angrier than before.
Above the swarm, the Keeper of Shadows landed hard in the center. It loomed massive, red eyes searing in the gloom. Darkness hung from its shoulders like some living cape.
"I see you've grown, Adegboyega." The Keeper's words slid out rough and mocking. "Stronger than I expected. But still only human. You're not enough to stop what's coming."
Ade stepped forward, letting his aura blaze—equal parts light and shadow. "I'm not facing you alone. I have everything I need right here."
The Battle Erupts
The Night People charged. Ade fired back with swirls of energy that were both sharp and beautiful, light and shadow locked together. Baba Ikuomola's arrows zipped past him, slicing through the darkness. The villagers were far up in the hills, safe for now. Every shot, every beam, carried the hope of those people.
The Keeper moved like liquid night, hard to track, harder to hit. Its attacks shook the very earth. Ade blocked as best he could, both sides crashing together.
"You cling to your humanity," the Keeper called out. "Give it up. Surrender to darkness. It's your only hope."
Ade's eyes shined with defiance. "I chose both light and shadow for protection, not for power. The shadow's mine. It doesn't own me."
Light and shadow clashed, creating a shockwave so fierce the trees ripped from the ground. Dirt and splintered wood filled the air, choking out the stars.
Angry, the Keeper summoned even more Night People. They burst from the darkness, tightening their circle around Ade.
Ade didn't budge. He held onto the memory of his mother's voice, felt Baba's steady courage at his back, heard his father's lessons like a distant drumbeat. All that strength rushed into him.
He shouted and unleashed a wave of pure, brilliant and devastating power. The Night People closest to him vanished instantly.
The Keeper reeled, hissing, "Impossible…"
Ade's light burned even brighter. "It's over, Keeper. This ends tonight."
The Keeper Strikes
There was nothing subtle about the Keeper's next move. It lunged, swinging a massive fist of darkness. Ade threw up a shadow shield just in time, the two forces crashed together, the sound like a thunderclap.
The impact sent Ade flying across the square. He rolled, but this time he was on his feet in an instant faster, sharper, stronger.
"You can't win," the Keeper growled. "Kill me, and the rest will tear your world apart."
Ade's eyes narrowed to slits. "I'll start with you, then!"
He hurled himself forward, energy curling into a spear of light and shadow. He drove it straight into the Keeper's chest. The creature staggered, darkness writhing wildly.
The other Night People stopped cold. They watched the Keeper falter for the first time.
Ade sucked in a breath. "Now. It ends now."
He gathered every last drop of power, human strength and inherited magic then hurled it skyward at the Keeper and the portal swirling above.
The whole world exploded in blinding light.
The World Holds Its Breath
For a moment, there was nothing, no noise, no movement. Just silence.
Slowly, the dust settled. The night calmed down. Ade stood alone and bathed in faint light, barely holding himself upright.
The Keeper was gone. The portal, gone. The Night People had vanished, maybe wounded, maybe just waiting.
Baba Ikuomola came up behind him, awe in his eyes. "Ade… you did it. You really did."
Ade dropped to his knees, fighting for air. "It's… over… for now."
Then his mother appeared at the edge of the square, tears running down her face. "Ade… my son… you saved us all."
He managed a tired smile, glowing softly from the power still humming in his veins. "We saved each other."
He looked up. Dawn spilled gold and red across the sky, the first warm light in hours. The village was safe. At least, for now.
But deep inside, Ade knew this fight wasn't finished. The Night People would return someday.
And when they did, he'd be ready.
Stronger. Braver. Unstoppable.
