Chapter 21 - where I froze

✦ NEXT MORNING — BREAKFAST ✦

Jayjay's POV

Morning light slipped through the curtains softly.

Warm.

Quiet.

Familiar in a way I wasn't used to yet.

I blinked slowly, still half caught between sleep and awareness.

Something was… different.

Then I felt it.

Weight.

Light.

Behind me.

---

I didn't move immediately.

Just stayed still.

Listening.

Breathing.

Because I already knew before I even turned my head.

Keifer.

---

His arm was still around my waist.

Not tight.

Not pulling.

Just… there.

Like it had stayed there the entire night without thinking.

Like letting go hadn't even crossed his mind.

My chest tightened slightly.

Not fear.

Something softer.

Something I still didn't fully understand.

---

I slowly turned my head.

He was still asleep.

Calm.

Not the version of him the world saw.

Not the mafia boss.

Just… quiet.

Guard down.

Real.

---

For a moment, I just looked at him.

Then carefully, I shifted his arm off me so I could sit up.

He didn't wake.

Only moved slightly.

Like even in sleep, he didn't want distance.

---

I sat at the edge of the bed for a second.

Thinking.

About last night.

About how easily I stayed.

About how normal it felt.

That was the strange part.

It shouldn't have felt normal.

But it did.

---

I stood slowly and walked out.

The house was already awake.

Servants moving quietly.

Breakfast already prepared.

I sat at the table first.

Waiting.

Not impatient.

Just… there.

---

Minutes passed.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Familiar.

Keifer.

---

He appeared at the entrance of the dining room.

Still slightly messy hair.

Same calm face.

Same unreadable expression.

But his eyes—

they landed on me first.

Not the table.

Not the room.

Me.

---

He sat down across from me.

No words yet.

Just presence.

---

The silence stayed for a while.

Until I finally spoke.

"You slept more than usual."

Simple.

Soft.

Not an accusation.

Just noticing.

---

He paused slightly.

Then answered low.

"…you stayed."

That was all he said.

No question.

Just fact.

---

I looked at him.

"…I said I would."

---

Another pause.

He didn't look away this time.

And neither did I.

---

Then quietly—

almost like it wasn't meant to be said out loud—

he spoke again.

"I didn't wake up once."

A small pause.

"…for the first time."

---

My fingers stopped near my cup.

Slowly, I looked at him fully.

He wasn't dramatic.

He wasn't emotional in the way people expected.

But something in his voice…

shifted.

Just slightly.

---

Like he was realizing something he didn't have words for yet.

---

I didn't push it.

Just nodded once.

Soft.

"I know."

---

Silence again.

But it wasn't empty.

Not anymore.

---

This time, it felt like something quietly staying between us.

Without force.

Without fear.

Just… there.

---

✦ AFTER BREAKFAST ✦

Keifer's POV

The silence after breakfast should've felt normal.

It didn't.

Because I kept noticing her.

Jayjay.

The way she stayed calm, even when she didn't need to. The way she didn't rush away after eating. The way she looked at me like I wasn't just… something dangerous.

That alone should've bothered me.

It didn't.

---

My phone buzzed.

Once.

Then again.

I glanced at it.

Work.

Urgent.

Of course.

My jaw tightened slightly.

I pushed the chair back.

"I have to go."

My voice was steady.

Controlled.

But my eyes didn't leave her.

---

She nodded softly.

"…Okay."

Just that.

No questions.

No complaints.

---

I stood.

But something in me didn't move fully.

Like leaving felt heavier than usual.

I paused near the door.

Looked back once.

She was still there.

Watching quietly.

---

"…stay inside today," I said.

Not a request.

Not harsh.

Just… low.

Protective in a way I didn't explain.

Jayjay's POV

I only stepped out for a few minutes.

Just fresh air.

That's what I told myself.

Nothing more.

---

But the moment I turned the corner near the garden—

I felt it.

Someone behind me.

Too close.

A hand almost brushed my arm.

"Hey—"

I flinched back instantly.

My heart dropped.

---

"Don't touch me."

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

My body froze slightly after saying it.

---

The man didn't step back.

He smiled instead.

That made it worse.

---

Before anything else could happen—

I heard it.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Controlled.

Familiar.

---

Keifer.

---

The air changed immediately.

Even before he spoke.

Even before I turned.

---

His hand caught my wrist first.

Not rough.

But firm.

Protective.

Final.

---

His voice was low.

Dangerously calm.

"…move."

Just one word.

---

The man froze.

Then backed away instantly.

Not from me.

From him.

---

Keifer didn't look at him again.

His attention stayed on me.

On my wrist.

On my face.

Something shifted in his eyes.

Just slightly.

---

"Did he touch you?" he asked quietly.

I shook my head quickly.

"No… just tried."

---

A pause.

His grip didn't loosen.

---

Then—

he stepped closer.

Not to the man.

To me.

---

And suddenly—

I didn't think.

I just moved.

I ran into him.

Wrapped my arms tightly around his chest.

Like my body made the decision before my mind did.

---

He stiffened for a second.

Just one.

Then—

his arm came around me immediately.

Holding me.

Firm.

Warm.

Stable.

---

I buried my face slightly into him without realizing.

My breathing uneven.

---

"…I'm here," he said low.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just close.

---

And then—

his hand moved.

Slowly.

Carefully.

To the back of my head.

Holding me like I wasn't something fragile.

But something that mattered.

---

His lips brushed my forehead.

Soft.✨️🤍

Barely there.

But intentional.

---

I froze.

Not because I was scared.

But because it felt… grounding.

---

He didn't pull away immediately.

Just stayed close for a moment longer.

His forehead still near mine.

His voice quieter this time.

"…don't go out alone again."

---

I nodded slightly.

Still holding him.

Not wanting to let go yet.

---

Keifer's POV

I noticed it then.

The shift.

The way my arm didn't want to leave her.

The way my body reacted before my thoughts did.

The way I didn't care who was watching.

---

That shouldn't matter.

But it did.

---

And as I held her there—

I realized something simple.

Danger wasn't what made me move fast

It was her

Okayy it's finally time for the reveal 👀🎯

I saw all your guesses and they were actually so fun to read 🤍✨

Some of you even said chess ♟️ which was honestly such a smart guess 😭❤️

But my sport is…

Rifle Shooting 🤍( some call it shooting , it's basically shooting a target 🔫👻)

Also known as Air Rifle 🎯✨

It's a sport that needs a lot of focus, control, patience, and steady breathing. Every small movement matters, and hitting the target feels so satisfying 🫧✨️♥️

And here's a little fun fact 🥹🎀

I actually first saw this sport in the book Lovelife of Jayfer 🤍 by ashdres_32 🤭❤️( I love your book author) it was actually only in one chapter 😭🔫 . The training one

I didn't expect it to catch my attention like that, but something about it felt so interesting and calm at the same time… and now it's something I really like 🤍🎯🎀

I love how it's not loud or rushed, it's more about being in control, staying focused, and trusting yourself ✨🌷💛

And the only person who guessed it is A_lava . You guessed it correct 🤭🎀

And my bestie ofc

Soo... that's my sport ✨️👀🤭🎀
