The veil of my domain peeled back, revealing the sprawling castle grounds beneath me in full view. Paloma's barrier pulsed below, gaudy and obvious, exactly the sort of spectacle that we did not need.

It could not be him, and yet it was.
When Paloma's fledgling had delivered that mocking message, thanking me for cultivating her next meal, I had nearly lost my own head. I had torn my way across space to reclaim what was mine. She had abandoned the child, and all my wasted effort had gone to her just like that.
As expected, Paloma had woven a barrier specifically to keep me out, and I had returned to my domain, bitter and seething.
