Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 – Aftermath

The forest fell quiet.

Not suddenly.

Slowly.

Like the world itself was catching its breath.

Kushina stood still.

Her chest rising.

Falling.

Controlled.

But heavy.

Too heavy.

The last attacker didn't move anymore.

Neither did the others.

For now.

Silence.

"…it's over…"

"…for now…"

Kushina lowered her hand slowly.

The chain faded.

Not violently.

Not unstable.

Just… gone.

She exhaled.

Long.

Deep.

Her legs trembled immediately after.

"…don't drop now…"

"Shut up…"

But her voice was weaker than before.

Daichi stepped forward.

Scanning.

Listening.

Always calculating.

"They'll send more."

Kushina nodded slightly.

"I figured."

A pause.

"…you held it."

She didn't look at him.

"Barely."

"That's enough."

Silence.

Kushina finally turned slightly.

Her eyes tired.

But clear.

"…I didn't lose control."

Daichi met her gaze.

"No."

A beat.

"You didn't."

Something in her chest eased.

Just a little.

Not relief.

Not pride.

Just—

confirmation.

"…you're still weak…"

"…I know…"

"But you're not breaking anymore."

Kushina didn't answer.

Because that mattered more than anything else.

Her legs gave out slightly.

She caught herself—

barely.

Daichi stepped in immediately.

Not dramatic.

Not soft.

Just there.

"You're done."

Kushina huffed weakly.

"I hate when you're right."

"You always do."

He supported her weight just enough.

Not carrying.

Not forcing.

Letting her stand.

"…we need to move…"

Kushina looked up slightly.

"…again?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"They know where we are now."

Silence.

Kushina closed her eyes briefly.

Just a second.

Then opened them again.

Focused.

"…fine."

She pushed herself upright.

Ignoring the pain.

Ignoring the exhaustion.

"I'm not going back to a cage."

Daichi nodded once.

"You won't."

A beat.

"…not if you keep improving."

Kushina smirked faintly.

"No pressure."

"…you need it."

They started moving.

Slow at first.

Then faster.

Not running.

Not yet.

But leaving.

Behind them—

the clearing.

The broken ground.

The fight.

Proof of what she had been.

And what she was becoming.

The forest stretched ahead.

Endless.

Unknown.

Kushina walked beside Daichi.

Her steps uneven.

But steady.

"…you're thinking…"

"…yeah…"

"…about what comes next…"

She didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

Not fully.

But something inside her had shifted.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Direction.

"…you can't stay here…"

"I know."

"…they'll keep coming…"

"I know."

A pause.

"…you're a target now…"

Kushina's jaw tightened.

"I was before."

"…not like this…"

Silence.

She looked ahead.

Into the trees.

Into the unknown.

"…then we stop running."

Daichi glanced at her.

Brief.

Sharp.

"…not yet."

A pause.

"You're not ready."

Kushina didn't argue.

Not this time.

"…but I will be."

Silence.

The kind that didn't need words.

"…you're changing…"

"…yeah…"

"…I don't like it…"

Kushina smirked faintly.

"Good."

A low rumble.

Not amused.

Not angry.

Interested.

"…we'll see how far that goes…"

Kushina's gaze stayed forward.

"…as far as it needs to."

The forest swallowed them again.

But this time—

Kushina wasn't just running.

She was moving forward.
