Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – They Found Us

The forest didn't warn them.

No wind.

No sound.

No shift.

Just—

presence.

Kushina felt it before she saw it.

A pressure.

Faint.

But wrong.

"…they're here…"

Her eyes opened slowly.

"I know."

She was already standing.

Already awake.

Already focused.

Not panicking.

Not rushing.

Just—

ready.

Daichi stepped into the clearing beside her.

His posture changed instantly.

Silent.

Sharp.

"They followed."

Kushina exhaled slowly.

"Of course they did."

A pause.

"…stay behind me."

She shook her head.

"No."

Daichi's gaze flickered toward her.

Brief.

Measuring.

"You're not ready."

Kushina's eyes stayed forward.

"I don't need to be."

A beat.

"I just need to not lose control."

Silence.

Short.

Then—

Daichi didn't argue.

"…fine."

A flicker.

Movement.

Too fast for normal eyes.

But not for hers anymore.

Not completely.

Three.

No—

Five.

Stepping out from the trees.

Same masks.

Same silence.

Same intent.

"…persistent…"

Kushina's jaw tightened.

"Annoying."

One of them stepped forward.

"You should have stayed contained."

Kushina tilted her head slightly.

"You should have stayed gone."

Silence.

Then—

They moved.

Fast.

Coordinated.

Deadly.

Daichi intercepted the first instantly.

Steel met steel.

A sharp clash cut through the air.

Kushina didn't wait.

Didn't hesitate.

She moved.

Not wild.

Not reactive.

Focused.

One attacker came from her left.

Kushina stepped back—

not far—

just enough—

Her chain formed.

Quick.

Precise.

It struck low—

catching his movement—

throwing him off balance.

Not strong enough to finish.

But enough to disrupt.

"…better…"

"Shut up."

Another came from behind.

Kushina turned—

blocked—

barely—

The impact pushed her back.

Her footing slipped.

But she didn't fall.

Not this time.

"…don't rush…"

"I'm not!"

Her chain snapped forward again—

not wide—

not wild—

direct.

Controlled.

It hit—

not perfectly—

but intentionally.

The attacker staggered.

Kushina moved again.

No pause.

No freeze.

No panic.

Daichi's voice cut through the chaos:

"Focus!"

"I am!"

More movement.

Faster now.

They adapted.

Reading her.

Testing her.

But she wasn't the same.

Not anymore.

A strike came—

Kushina didn't block.

She moved.

Side step.

Minimal.

Efficient.

Her chain followed—

not reacting—

predicting.

It struck the ground—

kicked dirt upward—

blinding—

just for a second.

Enough.

"…you're thinking…"

"…finally…"

Kushina's breath stayed controlled.

Even as her body strained.

Even as the pressure built.

Not outside—

inside.

"…don't let it slip…"

"I know."

Another attack.

Closer.

Harder.

Kushina blocked—

too slow—

The impact hit her shoulder.

Pain flared.

Sharp.

Her grip faltered—

just for a second—

The chain flickered—

almost—

wild—

"…now…"

"…let go…"

"No."

Her voice was low.

Firm.

She stepped back.

Not running.

Resetting.

Breathing.

In.

Out.

The pressure spiked—

then settled.

Not gone.

Never gone.

But held.

"…you stopped it…"

"…yeah…"

She lifted her hand again.

The chain formed.

Steadier than before.

Still not perfect.

Still not strong.

But hers.

Fully hers.

"Again."

Daichi's voice.

Short.

Sharp.

Trusting.

Kushina moved forward.

This time—

she attacked.

Not reacting.

Not defending.

Acting.

The chain shot forward—

direct—

striking the attacker's guard—

not breaking it—

but opening space.

Daichi moved in instantly—

finishing the strike.

Clean.

Efficient.

One down.

Kushina didn't look.

Didn't think.

Just moved again.

Another attacker lunged—

she dodged—

barely—

Her chain followed—

tight—

controlled—

It wrapped—

not fully—

but enough—

to slow him.

"…that's new…"

Kushina smirked faintly.

"Yeah."

More footsteps.

More coming.

"…not over…"

"I know."

Daichi stepped beside her again.

Back to back now.

Silent understanding.

No words needed.

"They won't stop."

Kushina exhaled slowly.

"Good."

A pause.

Then—

"…what?"

Her eyes sharpened.

"Then neither will I."

Silence.

The kind that comes before something breaks.

Or begins.

The attackers regrouped.

Slower now.

More careful.

They had seen enough.

"…she's changing…"

"…unstable… but improving…"

Kushina's jaw tightened.

"I'm right here."

No answer.

They moved again.

Together.

Faster than before.

Stronger.

Kushina stepped forward.

Not back.

Her chain formed—

steady—

focused—

Not perfect.

Not complete.

But controlled.

And this time—

she didn't lose it.

The forest shook with the clash.

Steel.

Chakra.

Movement.

But in the middle of it—

Kushina stood.

Not as chaos.

Not as a weapon.

But as something else.

Something new.

"…you're still weak…"

"…I know…"

"…but you didn't break…"

Kushina's breath was steady.

Even now.

Even here.

"…not this time…"
