Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 – Watched

The forest didn't stay quiet for long.

It never did.

Kushina felt it first.

Not a sound.

Not movement.

A shift.

Subtle.

But wrong.

She slowed, her gaze sharpening as she scanned the trees.

"…they're here…"

"I know," Daichi replied quietly.

He was already moving—just slightly—adjusting his stance, his attention spreading through the forest like a net.

Kushina exhaled slowly, forcing herself to stay calm.

No rushing.

No reacting too fast.

She glanced over her shoulder.

Minato hadn't moved.

That alone was enough to make her uneasy.

"…say something."

Minato's eyes flicked briefly toward her before returning to the forest.

"…they're close."

A short pause.

Then, quieter:

"…and they're spreading."

Kushina's jaw tightened.

"Great."

Daichi stepped forward, just enough to shift the space between them.

"We don't run."

Kushina raised an eyebrow, glancing at him.

"…we don't?"

"Not this time."

That changed everything.

Kushina adjusted her footing, her weight shifting slightly forward.

Not defensive.

Ready.

Minato's voice came again, low and controlled.

"They're not rushing."

Kushina frowned.

"…what does that mean?"

Minato didn't look at her this time.

"They're trying to box us in."

Silence settled.

He was right.

Kushina could feel it now.

Movement—left.

Then right.

Behind them.

Too controlled to be random.

"They're here," she said under her breath.

And then—

they moved.

Three figures broke through the trees ahead.

Two more from the sides.

One behind.

Fast.

Precise.

Daichi intercepted the first attacker instantly.

Steel clashed with a sharp, controlled sound.

Kushina didn't hesitate.

She stepped to the side, lowering her stance as her hand lifted.

The chain formed—

not perfect—

but controlled.

She slammed it into the ground in front of her.

Dirt and leaves burst upward, breaking the attacker's vision for just a second.

"…good," the voice inside her murmured.

"I know," she muttered under her breath.

The attacker pushed through anyway.

Faster than she expected.

Too close.

Kushina reacted instinctively—then caught herself.

No panic.

Just movement.

She twisted to the side, the strike missing her by inches.

Her footing slipped for a moment—

"…focus…"

"I am," she snapped, more to herself than anyone else.

Her chain shot forward again.

Not wide.

Not wild.

Focused.

It struck the attacker's arm, just enough to shift his balance.

Not stopping him—

but redirecting him.

Kushina stepped back immediately.

Reset.

Breathing.

In.

Out.

Behind her—

a shift.

She didn't turn.

Didn't need to.

"…right."

Minato's voice—quiet, precise.

Kushina moved instantly.

A clean step to the side.

A blade cut through the air where she had just been.

Her chain followed the movement.

Tight.

Controlled.

It struck low, catching the attacker just long enough.

Minato moved in.

Fast. Clean.

No wasted motion.

The attacker dropped.

Kushina blinked once, surprised.

"…okay."

"…don't get used to it," Minato replied calmly.

"…too late," she shot back, breathless.

Another attacker came from the front.

Daichi blocked the strike with ease, countering immediately.

But one slipped past him.

Straight toward Kushina.

Fast.

Too fast.

Her body reacted—

the pressure inside her surged—

"…now…"

"…no."

She forced it down.

Hard.

Her breath steadied.

Control.

Her chain formed again—smaller this time.

Focused.

It struck the attacker's weapon, pushing it just enough off course.

That was all Daichi needed.

He finished the movement in a single, precise strike.

Silence—

for half a second.

Then more movement.

"They're not stopping," Minato said quietly.

Kushina exhaled sharply.

"…of course they aren't."

She stepped back—

then forward again.

Choosing her position.

Not retreating.

Not panicking.

Fighting.

Differently.

"…you're adapting…"

"…yeah…"

Another attacker dropped from above.

Kushina looked up just in time.

Her chain shot upward—

fast—

not strong—

but accurate.

It disrupted his movement, forcing him to land unevenly.

Kushina didn't hesitate.

She stepped in and struck.

Not perfect.

But intentional.

He went down.

Her breathing grew heavier now.

Her body protesting.

But her mind—

clear.

"…you're still weak…"

"…I know…"

"…but you didn't break…"

Kushina steadied herself, lifting her hand once more.

The chain formed again.

Still imperfect.

Still fragile.

But hers.

Fully hers.

Daichi stepped beside her.

Minato shifted behind.

Three positions.

Without words.

Without planning.

It just… worked.

"…don't separate," Daichi said.

"I know," Kushina replied, her eyes locked forward.

"…left," Minato added quietly.

Kushina moved instantly.

Blocking.

Redirecting.

Not reacting—

predicting.

The final attacker lunged.

Desperate.

Fast.

Kushina didn't step back.

She stepped forward.

Her chain shot out—

tight—

controlled—

It struck directly, stopping his momentum just long enough.

Daichi ended it.

Clean.

Efficient.

Silence returned.

Real silence this time.

The forest stilled around them.

Kushina lowered her hand slowly.

The chain faded.

Her chest rose and fell heavily.

"…that was different…"

"…yeah…"

"…you didn't lose it…"

She glanced down at her hand for a moment.

"…I didn't."

Minato stepped slightly closer, his voice calm.

"You listened."

That caught her off guard.

Kushina looked at him briefly.

Then away.

"…don't make it weird."

A faint pause.

"…too late."

Daichi scanned the area one last time.

"They'll send more."

Kushina nodded slowly.

"I figured."

She exhaled, long and steady.

"…we're not running anymore."

That made both of them look at her.

Kushina's gaze was clear.

Focused.

Not reckless.

Not angry.

Something else.

"…not like before."

No one argued.

The forest watched.

But this time—

they weren't just being hunted.

They were starting to fight back.

Together.
