Chapter 55 - Chapter 55: Bad For Legs

"Who are you!" He looked around with genuine annoyance, because the suit's environmental sensors had returned no anomalies.

"Where are you hiding, coward!"

'If this is not a consequence of spending too much time with Wade, then I am already losing my mind.'

"You should not feel worried, and you should not think you are going crazy, Peter."

The voice was calm and measured, and the fact that it had used his name and could apparently read his thoughts was doing nothing good for his internal state.

"I have simply come to tell you something important. Answering your question about who I am, that is not important yet. Answering a question you are about to have, where I am is complicated, but if it helps, I am very far from you."

"What do you mean, and what is this about coming to talk to me?"

He kept moving his head, searching, watching through the corner of his vision as Cortana's face on the HUD showed concern.

He moved his lips silently: 'Do not worry. We will talk later.' She settled slightly and gave him a small smile, which he returned.

"I did not come to talk to you," the voice said. "I came to tell you that you cannot kill Hammerhead, because that would be very bad for you and for many other people."

"Why can I not kill him? As far as I can determine, there is nothing you can do to prevent it, mysterious voice."

'Excellent. I am having a conversation with myself. Completely normal behavior. Very standard among the Spider-Man community.'

"What would happen is that this faction would be absorbed by another criminal leader, causing their power to increase along with their personnel. Imagine what would happen if that someone were Fisk, Norman, Tombstone, Madame Masque, and so on.

Tell me what you think would happen."

'Damn it.'

He stood very still for a moment.

'The voice is right. This could cascade in a dozen directions and none of them are good. Criminal leaders, for all their faults, maintain a degree of control over the criminal landscape.

They keep crime at a low and regulated level in their own bizarre way.

Killing this idiot is exactly what happened in Spider-Man PS4 Game when Fisk went to prison. Others took his territory and his weapons. If I leave Hammerhead alive and operational, he keeps his men and his territory contained.

And this means I cannot kill Fisk either. Because Fisk controls the overall equilibrium. Killing the head creates a vacuum and vacuums fill with something worse.

I refuse to ask for Fisk's help the way PS4 Peter did. But I need to find a different approach to eliminating these people without disrupting the order.'

"Okay," he said. "Mysterious voice. I will not kill him. But I have a question."

"That is good to hear. What is your question?"

"If the same problem applies when I face certain other potential villains, I am warning you now: I will kill the green Goblin regardless of your objections." He said it with complete seriousness.

"If you kill all the villains, you become an unnecessary Spider-Man in your universe. There are no villains remaining, only minor crimes.

If this happens, you would need to be moved to another universe where Spider-Man is actually needed, making you obsolete in your own world.

Or, if you remain, you will slowly become invisible. No one will notice you anymore. No one will remember you. The fun will be over."

He stared at the empty air in front of him. "Wow. I did not see that coming."

He absorbed it. Then: "I still plan to kill the Goblin."

"You are stubborn, Peter Parker. Just like everyone else. Just do not kill them all. Happy hunting...."

"Wait. What do you mean, like everyone else? Just a minute! Dimensions! Teleportation! What do you mean by all of that?!"

Silence...

He waited... Nothing...

He exhaled.

"He is gone."

He looked at the explosive in his hand and at Hammerhead.

"This changes a great deal of my plans. Looks like you are living today, Hammy."

He took the explosive off, placed it on a wall instead, and set the timer.

He walked to the window with Hammerhead over his shoulder like a particularly dense bag of potatoes, broke it open, and jumped out.

The bombs detonated behind him in the classic sequence of an action scene.

Before he hit the ground he shot a web and swung across the street, and when a car was below him he released Hammerhead, who impacted with enough force to produce severe internal injuries.

When he woke up he would be unable to move. The police would have no difficulty collecting him.

"Next time I should not blow up Fisk's office," he said, turning toward the nearest area of active disturbance.

"I do not think he will appreciate it." He performed a somersault and landed on top of a car in a superhero pose same as the deadpool when he hurt his knee.

"But it gives me something to rub in his face at our inevitable first meeting." He paused.

"Wade is right. Bad for the knees. I will have to go back to the standard Spider-Man landing."

"Stop! All eyes on me!" he said in a playful voice, which caused two people nearby to stop and look at him.

"Grr." A harsh sound from his left.

"Now, who the hell are you?" Three sharp metallic claws, dripping blood, were pointed at him.

"Spider-Man." A calm, surprised voice from another direction. A man in a red suit that caught the sunlight, two small horns at the top of his mask.

He let out an internal groan that contained tiredness, annoyance, and the specific exhaustion of someone who has already had an extremely full day.

"Oh," he said. "You sons of bitches."
