Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Strange Voice

He dusted off his hands and walked toward Hammerhead's position.

A man came at him stupidly with a knife as he moved through the hallway outside Fisk's office.

He ducked to the side, let the stab pass, grabbed the man's hand, twisted his arm behind his back close to the shoulder, and slammed him face-first into the desk.

He turned his head and saw a second man approaching to help.

He grabbed the first man by the back of the neck and kicked him into the second, and they both went down.

They got back up quickly.

One came fast with a punch.

He blocked it, threw a jab to the stomach, grabbed the man by the hair, drove a knee into his cheek hard enough to dislocate his jaw, and finished with a second knee to drop him completely.

The other drew a sword and swung it at him.

He redirected it with his hidden blade, slapped the man hard across the face and held the stun, kicked one knee out from under him, then finished with a knee to the head that sent him backward and down.

He jumped and hit the ceiling as a shot came from below, rolled along it to avoid the follow-up volley, then launched himself off it with a powerful kick to the shooter's face that sent him into a wall hard enough to produce blood.

Before the man could catch his breath, a web shot at a nearby bookshelf and pulled it down on top of him.

He sighed as more footsteps approached.

He turned, grabbed the nearest man by the face, and hit him repeatedly in the stomach.

The blows broke ribs. When the man hit the floor he was close to the border between conscious and not.

He moved through the rest quickly.

'The only thing they have against me is numbers.' He twisted the arm of a man who had decided to be brave, then knocked him out with a strike to the head.

'Not really, even with that advantage they won't beat me.'

"This disappointment is immense," he said, and kicked the last man unconscious.

He walked to the door of Fisk's office, entered, moved casually to one side to let a plasma rifle projectile pass through the space he had just occupied, and looked at Hammerhead.

"What a surprise," he said. "I did not expect this level of effort from a man as insignificant, mediocre, and cosmetically unfortunate as you."

"Spider-Man!" Hammerhead clenched his teeth and pointed the rifle. "Surrender peacefully or I will kill you myself. I hope you choose the second option, insect."

"You are tempting me. You really are. But no." He tilted his head. "By the way, Hammy, spiders are arachnids, not insects. Did they not teach you that at the school for criminals, or are you simply stupid?"

"I am going to kill you, you damn insec-...."

A web hit his mouth before the word completed.

A second web hit his body and pinned his arms to his chest as the impact knocked him off his feet.

Spider-Man yawned without particular enthusiasm, stepped onto the table, landed both feet squarely on Hammerhead's chest, and took his plasma rifle, pointing it at his throat.

"Here is the deal," he said, and deployed his hidden blade, cutting only the webbing around Hammerhead's mouth.

The blade stayed out. "Tell me what you want here and I will not kill you. Simple question."

"Go to h-...." He stopped when the blade moved toward his shoulder blades. "Wait!"

"Wrong answer," Spider-Man said, moving the blade to his chest and beginning to apply it very close to where it would cause the most interesting problems.

"AHHHH!" Hammerhead screamed. "You will pay for this..... AHHH!"

"Wrong answer again." With each refusal the blade went incrementally deeper. "What are you doing here?"

"The codes!"

"What codes?"

"I do not s-...." "AHHH!"

"Let us try again. What codes?"

"The ones in the vault!"

"Which vault?"

"Research center!"

"Ahhh," Spider-Man said, nodding slowly in apparent understanding.

He looked at the blade in Hammerhead's chest and retracted it. Hammerhead exhaled with relief. "Do I look like an idiot to you?"

"What?" was all Hammerhead got out before a straight right hook hit him hard enough to shake the room.

He pulled his left arm back and hit him again in the jaw, the same spot, and the crack of it was loud enough to bounce off the walls.

"Heartbeat and breathing accelerated," Spider-Man said, grabbing him by the neck and lifting him. The visor glowed. "Sweat on the forehead and hands. Dilated pupils. I could continue but that would be unnecessary."

He held Hammerhead at eye level. "What are you planning?"

"Ha." A pause. "Haha." Hammerhead was somehow laughing through his dislocated jaw, glaring at him with defiance.

Spider-Man squinted, pulled his free hand back, and punched him again, snapping the jaw back into alignment.

Hammerhead coughed blood and kept laughing. "You are just a brat trying to be a br-...." "AHHH!"

"I am not a hero." He drove the blade into his thigh to emphasize the point.

"Tell me what you want!"

"What I want?" Hammerhead said through the pain, managing a bloody smile.

"What we will want.... We want New York."

Boom. Boom.

Boom. Boom.

Boom. Boom

Multiple explosions in rapid sequence, from different directions. He looked out the window. Smoke was rising from several distinct points across the city.

"Cortana."

"A group of armed masked men has appeared at multiple locations throughout the city," she said, feeding video through the HUD from security cameras across the grid.

"They are attacking and terrorizing banks, parks, shopping centers, roads, and other points of interest."

"While you stand here wasting your time with me!" Hammerhead said, grinning in a way that had nothing pleasant in it.

"My men are looting the city like crazed ants! The Maggia are taking over New York and you have not...."

"GOD! Shut your mouth!" He hit him hard enough to produce unconsciousness.

"I hate when arrogant villains do their typical monologue and never provide any useful information."

He produced a cube from his pocket, similar to the one from Max Steel, built from the same machine he had acquired earlier along with elements of the nanotechnology data Cortana was still working to fully understand.

He twisted it and a compartment opened revealing various explosives.

He began distributing them throughout Fisk's office.

He pressed the button and the box collapsed back into a cube, which he put away.

He moved to set the last explosive on Hammerhead's webbing and program the timer.

"You cannot kill him, Spider-Man."

He stopped.

He looked around. He checked his sensors. Nothing.... But he knew that was a illusion.

"Cortana. Search for the source of that voice and find out who accessed our system."

"Peter." Cortana's face on the HUD showed genuine confusion alongside concern.

"I do not know what you are referring to. There is no voice. Or at least nothing my sensors can detect. No one has accessed the system. Are you certain you are not extremely stressed and beginning to hear things?"

"What?"

"She thinks you need to relax, or possibly seek assistance in the area of mental health."

The voice again, this time with a slight touch of amusement in it, the same quality he used when making fun of criminals he was handling, which he did not appreciate at all.
