The Original Vessel
Ethan and his friends moved through the shifting mists of time, following Joseon's dark trail. Finally, the air cleared, revealing a quiet, traditional house. Kaito stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes fixed on a young boy playing near the porch. The boy stopped and looked back, a strange sense of recognition passing between them.
"Kaito, wait!" Ethan called out. "Who is that?"
"That's me," Kaito whispered, his voice trembling. "That was my original vessel. My name... it was Shuji."
Before they could process this, the Lady in Red flickered into existence beside them. "Do not touch him," she warned sharply. "The God of Space and Time is already furious with your intrusion. Watch closely; this is the moment Saesbyeol's influence changes young Shuji's fate forever."
She vanished as quickly as she appeared, and the scene around them distorted.
The Betrayal of Megumi
The peaceful afternoon shattered. They watched in horror as Joseon's shadow coiled around Shuji's mother, Teacher Megumi. Her eyes turned a milky, unnatural white.
"Teacher Megumi, what is happening to you?" a young, armored man cried out.
Ethan gasped. "Is that... my dad? Lucas?"
"He looks exactly like you, E," Akihiko whispered. "Nana Amelia was right—they were inseparable in their youth."
Instead of answering, the possessed Megumi raised her hands. Sacred talisman papers flew from her sleeves like sharpened blades, encircling Lucas. With a flick of her wrist, they released a surge of spiritual lightning, pinning the general to the ground, immobilized.
"Lucas, hold on!" Calista shouted, rushing to his side.
From the shadows, Joseon watched the chaos, his laughter cold and hollow. Beside Ethan, Baekhyun's knuckles turned white. He wanted to strike the demon, but the laws of time held him back.
The Death of Shuji
The horror escalated as Megumi, moved by a force not her own, drew a ceremonial knife. She turned toward her son.
"Do you remember this, Kaito?" Zac asked softly.
Kaito didn't answer. He clutched his head, falling to his knees as suppressed memories flooded back like a tidal wave. In the past, the knife fell. Megumi struck down her own child.
As Shuji's life faded, a thick black smoke began to rise from his body—Lucifer, reaching out to claim the boy's innocent soul. But Calista saw it.
"The Lord of Darkness," she hissed, recognizing the ancient shadow. "No. I will not let you have him!"
She threw open her grimoire, her voice booming with the authority of the Babaylan:
"Sto ónoma tis pantodýnamis theótitas, katára to plásma pou échei kakés prothéseis stin athóa psychí!" (In the name of the almighty deity, I curse the creature with evil intentions toward this innocent soul!)
A burst of holy light erupted from the book. The black smoke shrieked, forced away by the purity of the spell. Joseon hissed in pain and fled into the trees as Shuji's soul vanished, protected by the light.
The Aftermath
The possession broke. Megumi blinked, the darkness leaving her eyes. She looked down at her blood-stained hands and then at the small, lifeless form of her son.
"What happened?" she asked, her voice a fragile whisper. She collapsed beside him, her screams joining the sudden downpour of rain. "Did I... did I do this?"
"No, Teacher," Lucas said, struggling to his feet and placing a hand on her shoulder. "You were possessed. A demon used your strength."
"What have I done?" Megumi wailed, her tears mixing with the rain.
"The prophecy is unfolding," Calista said grimly, looking toward the dark forest where Joseon had vanished. "The Lord of Darkness is here, and this chaos is only the beginning."
"We must take him to the shrine," Lucas said softly, picking up the boy's body. "We must give Shuji the funeral he deserves."
THE ONI'S BARGAINThe Forbidden Ritual
Ethan and Akihiko could not hold back their tears, their hearts breaking for the small boy lying still in the rain. Beside them, Kaito was silent, his eyes fixed on his mother. He didn't scream; he simply watched as the tears tracked silently down his face.
The Lady in Red appeared once more, her crimson robes fluttering in a wind no one else could feel. "Let us move to the final act of this tragedy," she whispered. "Only then will you understand the true nature of the Nogitsune."
With a snap of her fingers, the scene shifted to the interior of the moonlit shrine. Shuji's body lay prepared for burial, surrounded by the scent of incense. The village was eerily silent—everyone had fallen into a deep, magical slumber. Everyone except Megumi.
"What is she doing?" Ethan whispered, watching as Megumi took a jagged dagger and sliced her palm open, letting the blood drip onto the sacred floor.
"Mom, no! Stop!" Kaito cried out, reaching for her.
"She cannot hear you," the Lady in Red reminded them coldly. "The God of Space and Time has veiled you. You are ghosts in this memory."
"She's calling out to something dark," Zac noted, his skin crawling.
"She is striking a bargain with an Oni," Kaito said, his voice hollow.
The Deal with Darkness
As Megumi chanted, a thick, oily black smoke curled up from the floorboards. The air grew heavy with the stench of sulfur. Akihiko shuddered, "Oni... the demonic executioners of folklore."
Megumi picked up a terrifying Oni mask and pressed it to her face. When she spoke, her voice was no longer human—it was a guttural, layered growl. "Bring my son back. I offer my soul in exchange."
The smoke coalesced into a towering shadow. "A shrine maiden seeking a demon's favor?" the Oni hissed. "I cannot simply restart a heart that has been purified by these holy walls. His body is useless to me."
"Then find him a new one!" Megumi pleaded.
"Your soul is a rare prize, priestess," the Oni mused. "Very well. We shall give him a new vessel. But it must be of your blood—a child born of a shrine maiden."
Megumi's eyes drifted toward the sleeping form of her sister, Hoshiko, in the corner of the shrine. "My sister... Hoshiko is pregnant. Use the child in her womb. Let my son live through him."
"Marvelous," the Oni chuckled. "But heed my warning: he will return with gaps in his memory, his heart filled with a thirst for vengeance. He will not be the boy you knew."
"I don't care," Megumi sobbed, the mask hiding her agony. "As long as he lives."
With a final, desperate cry, Megumi turned the dagger on herself. As her life ebbed away, the sleeping spell broke.
The Warning
Lucas and Calista burst into the shrine, but they were heartbeats too late. They watched in horror as Megumi's soul was dragged into the shadows by the Oni's smoke.
"We're too late," Lucas groaned, dropping his sword.
"Not yet," Calista said, her eyes narrowing as she spotted the Oni mask on the floor. "She made a deal. I will find out what she promised."
A young shrine maiden stepped out from behind a silk screen, her face pale with terror. "I heard it all," she whispered. "I was in an astral state when she spoke. She traded her soul to put Shuji into my unborn child."
"God, she was desperate," Calista whispered, reaching out to steady the woman. "What is your name?"
"Hoshiko," the woman replied, clutching her stomach.
"Hoshiko, you are in grave danger," Calista said firmly. "The Oni will be waiting for that child. We must find where they are hiding Shuji's soul until you give birth. The battle for your son's life has only just begun."
The Missing Gap
Jin Ae stood frozen in the garden, her breath hitching in her throat. "That's impossible," she stammered, shaking her head. "I remember it so clearly. I drove her myself. I saw her walk through the terminal... I watched her plane take off for Korea."
"Memory can be a fragile thing, Jin Ae," Catherine said softly, her eyes glowing with a faint, violet light. "Especially when a demon is involved."
"We need to see what actually happened," Jasmine urged. "We have to go back to that night."
"Can you really do that?" Jin Ae asked, her voice trembling.
"I can't physically take us there like Ethan did," Catherine explained, "but I can pull the truth from the veil of the past. Give me your hands."
Jin Ae reached out, her palms meeting Catherine's. The world around them dissolved into a blur of gray and shadow. When the colors bled back in, they were standing at the edge of the woods behind the White Dove hideout. It was the night of the grandmother's "departure."
"There she is," Jasmine whispered, pointing.
They watched as a younger Jin Ae emerged from the side door. Her eyes were wide but vacant, staring straight ahead as if she were seeing a world invisible to everyone else. She wasn't running; she was drifting, her movements fluid and mechanical.
"Is she sleepwalking?" Jasmine asked, watching her friend move deeper into the dark forest.
"Look at her hands," Catherine noted.
As Jin Ae approached the clearing where her grandmother sat in quiet meditation, the younger version of herself waved a hand through the air. A shimmering, dark energy rippled from her fingers. Instantly, the grandmother's head slumped forward, plunged into a deep, unnatural slumber.
"Oh no... she's possessed," Jasmine breathed, covering her mouth.
"No," Catherine said, her voice grim as she stepped closer to the memory. "Look at the way she moves. There is no struggle in her soul. She isn't being possessed from the inside—she's being played like a puppet from the outside. Someone was pulling her strings."
The Puppet Master
The scene grew colder as the "puppet" Jin Ae stood over the sleeping woman. The darkness around her began to thicken, forming the faint, towering silhouette of a man behind her, his hands hovering just inches above her shoulders.
"Lucifer," Jin Ae whispered, watching her own hands reach for her grandmother's throat.
THE BIRTH OF THE NOGITSUNEThe Shadow's Gift
The Travelers watched in silence as the Oni held Shuji's flickering soul. With a guttural chant, the demon shoved the soul into the lifeless, preserved body of a wild fox—a temporary vessel that pulsed with dark, unnatural energy.
"As the son of a shrine maiden, you have the potential for greatness," the Oni hissed. "But this husk won't last. Even now, Hoshiko is in labor. Your true vessel is being born."
As Shuji's soul merged with the fox—becoming a Nogitsune—a familiar black smoke began to swirl in the corner of the room. It solidified into the calm, handsome face of Joseon.
"Hello, Shuji," Joseon said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "I am here to show you the truth about your mother. I want you to see how she was murdered by the Sigbinan, Lucas Sandoval."
Ethan shook his head in horror, wanting to scream that it was a lie, but he was powerless. He watched as Joseon pressed his hand to the Nogitsune's head, feeding Shuji a twisted, fabricated memory of his mother's death—one where Lucas was the villain, not the protector.
The Vow of Vengeance
The Nogitsune's eyes snapped open, glowing with a cold, predatory light. "They will pay," Shuji growled, his voice vibrating with newfound malice. "I will take my new vessel from Hoshiko's son, and once I am reborn, I will destroy the Sigbinan and everyone he loves. They will suffer as my mother suffered."
"I can help you, little wolf," Joseon purred. "Since this dead vessel is weak, let me grant you a taste of my own power. Nogitsune are telepathic by nature; with my help, your mind will become a fortress and a weapon."
Joseon channeled a stream of abyssal dark energy into Shuji. The fox-spirit arched its back, its fur bristling as its power tripled.
"The strength..." Shuji whispered, his mind expanding. "I can feel everything. It's intoxicating."
"Go now. Start your war," Joseon commanded. "Kill the Sigbinan and his bloodline. Ensure no one is left to stop you... especially the Bellators."
The Counter-Strategy
Shuji narrowed his eyes, his telepathic mind already calculating. "The Bellators are a problem of numbers. If we are to win, we must mirror their tactics. We need to multiply and conquer."
"What are you suggesting?" Joseon asked, intrigued.
"We need a counterpart to their warriors," Shuji replied. "I will find human soldiers for you—lost souls I can corrupt and lead. We will match the Bellators' numbers with an army of our own."
Joseon smiled, a look of genuine pride on his face. "I was right to choose you. The wisdom of a Kitsune merged with the darkness of a Nogitsune... you are truly a masterpiece."
