The King's eyes were black, which seemed to be a family trait, and they found me the moment I stepped into view. His gaze locked onto me with a fury that had nothing to do with the fight and everything to do with what I represented to him. Ares registered it immediately. Phoenix's large form shifted and backed up, positioning himself directly between the King and me, a low warning growl rolling out of his chest like something with weight behind it.
The King did not heed it. He was furious and bleeding and running out of options and he charged, driving straight toward where Phoenix stood covering me.
