Apparently, a boy from the Slytherin Quidditch team had already put his name in the Goblet of Fire, and there were also rumors about Cedric. While they were figuring out who had put their names in the Goblet, I was happily putting honey on my pancakes when we heard cheers. When we turned to see why, we saw Angelina enter the Great Hall. She seemed a little happy and embarrassed. When she sat down near us, we heard her say that she had put her name in the Goblet of Fire. When Harry asked her if she was 17, she replied that she had just turned 17 the previous week. Everyone at the table congratulated her and wished her luck in becoming the Hogwarts champion.
After breakfast we were on our way to Hagrid's hut when, as we left the dining hall, we bumped into the Beauxbatons students and their headmistress who were preparing to put their names in the chalice. When we passed Fleur, I made a gesture of greeting which she returned. When we were near Hagrid's hut, we saw that the Beauxbatons carriage was about 200 meters from his hut and nearby there was a makeshift stable where the winged horses, which were the size of an elephant, were kept.
When Hagrid opened his hut door to greet us, Harry and Hermione seemed surprised to see him, or rather, the way he was dressed. Hagrid's appearance was... unique. He was wearing a furry brown suit with a yellow and orange checkered tie. I also think he used a lot of lubricant to straighten his hair and put it in two pigtails. I couldn't understand why he had pigtails, and I really didn't want to think about it. It was hard not to say anything, and luckily Hermione seemed to feel the same way, not commenting on his fashion choice and instead asking about his Skrewts.
We spent some time in Hagrid's hut, and he almost blurted out what the first task was about. The boys spent most of their time trying to get answers from Hagrid about the tournament tasks and speculating about the possible candidates for Hogwarts champion. When it was time to go to the Great Hall, Hagrid wanted to put on some cologne, but I don't know what kind he got, but it smelled awful. I don't know if it was the scent of the cologne or if Hagrid had used too much. Luckily, he went to wash off some of the smell, and the boys seemed very curious about Hagrid's change, not only because of the cologne but also because of his clothes.
We were waiting for Hagrid so we could return to the castle together, but it seemed Hagrid had forgotten about us when he saw the Headmistress of Beauxbatons get out of her carriage. He behaved like a true gentleman, helping her out and then walking her to the castle. It seemed that's when they realized the reason for Hagrid's change of heart, although Hermione seemed a little indignant that Hagrid had forgotten about us in his hut.
As we made our way to the castle, we ran into the Durmstrang group, who entered slightly ahead of us. When we entered the Great Hall, which was packed, we noticed that the Goblet of Fire had already been placed in front of the staff table, more precisely in front of Dumbledore's chair.
When we sat down at our table, Fred commented that he hoped Angelina would be selected, and several others echoed this sentiment. During the meal, I noticed Harry seemed somewhat distracted; it was clear he wasn't enjoying the banquet. That's when I remembered the date... today was the anniversary of his parents' death. Then I understood why he seemed to force his smiles and become lost in thought at times. I don't consider myself good with words, but I tried to cheer him up a bit, so I approached him and said in a low voice so only he could hear,
"You know... they never leave us... they're always here..."
I gestured to my heart and continued,
"As long as we don't forget them, they'll always be present, accompanying us on our journey... and I think... they... perhaps would prefer that we remember them with a smile..."
Harry's eyes seemed to be holding back tears, and his voice became a little hoarse as he spoke.
"Thank you..."
Harry's words were interrupted as Dumbledore spoke loudly enough for everyone present to hear.
"Well, the Goblet is almost ready to make a decision... it seems to me, only a minute remains... when I pronounce the champion's name, please come to this part of the Great Hall and enter the adjoining room, where you will receive your first instructions."
With a flick of his wand, he extinguished almost all the candles except those inside the pumpkins, plunging the Great Hall into near darkness. The only thing that shone brightly were the flames of the Goblet.
Suddenly, the flames turned red and sparks began to fly. Then
, a tongue of fire shot into the air and flung out a charred piece of
parchment, which Dumbledore picked up and read aloud.
"The champion of Durmstrang... will be Viktor Krum!"
A great deal of applause and cheers erupted. Krum rose from the Slytherin table, walked past the staff table, and disappeared through the door of the next room. Karkarov's voice, encouraging Viktor, could still be heard above the applause throughout the Great Hall.
Everyone's attention returned to the Goblet of Fire as its flames blazed red once more, and then a second piece of parchment was flung out, which Dumbledore caught and read.
"The champion of Beauxbatons... is Fleur Delacour!"
Fleur stood gracefully and walked between the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw tables. Some of the unsorted students were weeping, their faces buried in their arms, while others sobbed as Fleur disappeared behind the same door as Viktor.
A tense, emotional silence filled the Great Hall as the next Hogwarts champion was about to be revealed. Once again, the Goblet of Fire released another piece of parchment, and Dumbledore announced,
"The Hogwarts champion... is Cedric Diggory!"
As Cedric rose, he was cheered by the entire Hufflepuff table, while the others groaned. The applause for Cedric lasted a long time, and just as Dumbledore was about to continue his speech, the flames in the Goblet of Fire changed color again, releasing yet another piece of parchment. When Dumbledore took the piece, this time he took a long time to read the name written on it. Everyone in the Great Hall was silent, watching him until he finally said it aloud,
"Harry Potter."
Harry was bewildered. Everyone in the Great Hall was staring at him. Professor McGonagall approached the Headmaster, and they whispered among themselves. Harry turned to us and said, completely confused.
"I didn't put my name in... you know that."
I placed my hand on Harry's and felt it tremble slightly.
"We believe you, Harry...
" "HARRY POTTER!... Harry!... stand up and come here, please!
" "WAIT!"
I stood up, and everyone's attention turned to me. I turned to Harry and said loudly and clearly so everyone could hear,
"Harry, did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire, or did you ask someone older to do it for you?"
Harry stared at me, stunned, for a moment until I gestured with my eyes for him to answer.
"No... I didn't.
" "Would you be willing to take an oath saying that you didn't put your name in it, nor did you ask anyone else to do it for you?"
Understanding what I wanted to do, Harry nodded, and before Dumbledore or any other professor could say anything, he stood up, wand in hand, and began to recite the oath.
"I, Harry James Potter, swear by my magic that I did not put my name in the Goblet of Fire to enter the tournament, and that I did not ask anyone older to do it for me. I swear by my magic."
Once Harry finished his oath, he cast a Lumos spell that illuminated a large part of the Great Hall, indicating that he still possessed his magic. The Great Hall fell silent. Harry, still nervous, looked at me, and I whispered,
"Go."
