Chapter 31 - The fear of what stands before them

The plateau did not return to normal.

It couldn't.

Even after the violent surge of energy had subsided, even after the shadows retreated and the air steadied, something fundamental had changed. The ground remained fractured, long cracks stretching across the once-stable stone like scars that refused to heal. The torches were relit slowly, cautiously, their flames flickering as if unsure whether they had the right to exist in a place that had just witnessed something beyond comprehension.

At the center of it all stood Nyx.

Still.

Silent.

Unmoving.

The Eclipse energy that had raged uncontrollably moments ago was now contained, but not gone. It lingered around him like a quiet storm, subtle yet undeniable. Anyone with even the slightest sensitivity to energy could feel it pressing against their senses—a presence that did not belong in the natural order of the world.

Kael was the first to move.

He stepped forward carefully, his usual confidence replaced with something more measured. Not fear—but caution. He studied Nyx closely, as if trying to confirm that the person standing before him was still the same one he had walked beside all this time.

"…You done terrifying everyone for the night?" Kael said, attempting a light tone, though it didn't fully land.

Nyx exhaled slowly, the faint distortion around him easing just slightly.

"For now," he replied.

Kael let out a breath. "Good. Because I'm pretty sure half of them are deciding whether to run or attack."

Nyx's gaze shifted outward.

Kael wasn't wrong.

Across the plateau, the clans had not relaxed.

If anything, the tension had deepened.

Where there had once been arrogance, curiosity, or even mild hostility, there was now something far more dangerous—uncertainty. And uncertainty, among powerful people, often led to one thing.

Preemptive action.

The Hiyori clan had regrouped, their warriors standing closer together now, their earlier aggression replaced with guarded caution. Their leader's expression was tight, his eyes never leaving Nyx.

"That… is not something we can allow to grow unchecked," he said quietly to those beside him.

Not far from them, the Raizen leader stood with his arms crossed, his gaze thoughtful rather than reactive. "If we move against him now," he said, "we risk triggering exactly what we fear."

"And if we don't?" one of his warriors asked.

The Raizen leader didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was obvious.

If they didn't act—

Nyx would continue to grow.

The Tsukiyomi leader stood slightly apart from the others, her silver hair catching the faint light of the torches. Her expression remained calm, but her eyes were sharper than ever, analyzing, calculating.

"He's stabilizing it," she murmured.

One of her subordinates frowned. "That's not possible. That kind of power should destroy its host."

"And yet," she replied softly, "it hasn't."

Her gaze remained fixed on Nyx.

"Which makes him far more dangerous than we initially thought."

At the center platform, the Hoshin leader stood in silence.

Unlike the others, he did not speak, did not consult, did not react outwardly.

He simply watched.

His son.

The one he had cast aside.

Now standing at the center of a storm that could reshape the world.

"…You've gone further than expected," he said quietly, almost to himself.

Back near the fractured ground, Kael shifted his stance slightly, lowering his voice. "Alright… real talk. What just happened to you?"

Nyx didn't answer immediately.

He looked down at his hand.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

A faint ripple of black and silver energy moved across his skin, subtle but controlled, like a current flowing beneath the surface.

"…It's still there," Nyx said.

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, no kidding."

Nyx clenched his fist slightly, and the energy responded instantly, tightening, compressing, then fading back into stillness.

"It's not just power," Nyx continued quietly. "It's… aware."

Kael's expression shifted. "…Aware how?"

Nyx's gaze darkened slightly.

"It reacts," he said. "It pushes. It tries to take control."

Kael let out a slow breath. "And you're just… okay with that?"

"No," Nyx replied.

A pause.

"…But I can't reject it."

Before Kael could respond, movement spread across the plateau.

This time—

It wasn't hidden.

Several clan leaders stepped forward at once.

Hiyori.

Raizen.

Tsukiyomi.

Even a few smaller clans followed.

Not as a united front.

But close enough to feel like one.

Kael's hand instinctively went to his blade. "…Here we go."

Nyx remained still.

Watching.

Waiting.

The Hiyori leader stepped forward first, his voice sharp.

"That power you wield," he said, "it does not belong in this world."

Nyx met his gaze calmly. "And yet, here it is."

A flicker of irritation crossed the man's face.

"You expect us to simply accept that?" he continued. "After what we just witnessed?"

"I don't expect anything," Nyx replied.

The Raizen leader stepped in before the tension could escalate further.

"This isn't about acceptance," he said. "It's about risk."

His eyes locked onto Nyx.

"You've demonstrated control—for now. But power like that doesn't remain stable forever."

Nyx didn't deny it.

Because he knew.

They weren't wrong.

The Tsukiyomi leader stepped forward last, her presence calm but commanding.

"There are only two logical outcomes," she said. "Either you learn to fully control that power…"

She paused slightly.

"…or we remove the threat before it reaches that point."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Absolute.

Kael stepped forward immediately. "Yeah, that's not happening."

Several warriors reacted instantly, their auras flaring in response.

Nyx raised a hand slightly.

Kael stopped.

Nyx stepped forward.

One step.

Simple.

But enough.

The air shifted instantly.

Not violently.

But unmistakably.

"You're afraid," Nyx said.

No accusation.

No anger.

Just truth.

The Hiyori leader scoffed. "We're cautious."

Nyx's eyes didn't waver.

"No," he said. "You're afraid of something you can't control."

The words landed harder than any attack.

For a moment—

No one moved.

Because deep down—

They knew.

He was right.

Nyx's gaze swept across them all.

"You're not wrong to be cautious," he continued. "This power… is dangerous."

Kael blinked slightly. "…That's new. You admitting that?"

Nyx ignored him.

"But understand this," Nyx said, his voice steady.

"I am not your enemy."

A pause.

"But if you decide to make me one…"

The Eclipse energy flickered faintly around him.

Controlled.

Quiet.

But real.

"…you won't win."

The tension snapped.

Not into chaos.

But into something worse.

A silent understanding.

The clans stepped back.

Not in submission.

Not in agreement.

But in acknowledgment.

This was not a fight they could rush into.

Kael exhaled slowly once the pressure eased. "…Well… that could've gone a lot worse."

Nyx didn't respond.

His gaze had already shifted to the horizon.

Because deep down—

He could still feel it.

The fragments.

More of them.

Far beyond the plateau.

Waiting.

And this—

This gathering—

Was only the beginning.
