Chapter 34 - The path that should not exist

Dawn did not break over the mountains in warmth.

It crept in slowly, almost reluctantly, as if even the sun hesitated to cast its light over a land that had already begun to change. The golden rays that touched the distant peaks felt weak, diluted, unable to fully push back the lingering darkness that clung to the world after the events of the night before.

The All-Clan Gathering lay behind them now.

Nyx did not look back.

Kael did—once.

"…You really just walked away from all that," he muttered, adjusting his cloak as he followed closely behind. "No dramatic exit. No final words. Nothing."

Nyx continued forward without slowing, his gaze fixed ahead. "There was nothing left to say."

Kael exhaled through his nose. "Yeah, well… they definitely had more to say about you."

Nyx didn't respond.

Because he already knew.

The mountain path stretched endlessly ahead, winding through jagged cliffs and steep ridges that seemed carved more by violence than time. Loose stones shifted beneath their feet, and the higher they climbed, the thinner and colder the air became. But it wasn't just the environment that had changed.

It was the feeling.

The further they moved from the Gathering, the less they felt the presence of the clans.

But that absence—

Was quickly replaced.

By something else.

The pull.

It had grown stronger overnight.

No longer faint or distant, it now pressed against Nyx's awareness with undeniable clarity. It was not scattered like before, not chaotic or unpredictable. It was focused. Directed.

Intentional.

Kael noticed the shift in Nyx's pace and frowned slightly. "It's getting stronger, isn't it?"

Nyx nodded once.

"Yes."

Kael sighed. "Of course it is."

He kicked a loose stone off the path, watching it tumble into the depths below before disappearing into silence. "…You ever think maybe we should slow down? Think this through?"

Nyx's answer came immediately.

"No."

Kael shook his head. "Yeah, I figured."

The path narrowed as they moved deeper into the mountains, forcing them to walk single file along a ridge that barely allowed room for footing. To their left, a steep wall of jagged rock rose sharply. To their right, a drop so deep it swallowed light stretched endlessly downward.

Kael glanced over the edge once.

Then immediately looked away.

"…Yeah, I'm not doing that again," he muttered.

Nyx didn't react.

His focus had sharpened.

Because something had changed.

The wind—

Had stopped.

At first, it was subtle.

Barely noticeable.

But the longer they walked, the more unnatural it became. The usual mountain currents, the shifting air, the faint whistles through cracks in the rock—all of it had vanished.

Replaced by stillness.

"…You hear that?" Kael asked.

Nyx didn't answer.

Because there was nothing to hear.

No birds.

No insects.

No distant echoes.

Nothing.

"This place feels dead," Kael said quietly.

Nyx's gaze swept across the barren landscape.

"It is."

The ground beneath their feet changed as they moved forward. The natural stone gave way to something darker, smoother, as though it had been worn down—or consumed—over time. Faint cracks ran through it, not like natural fractures, but like something had tried to break through from below.

Kael crouched slightly, running his hand over the surface before quickly pulling it back.

"…That's not normal rock," he said.

Nyx didn't need to check.

"I know."

The pull intensified.

Stronger.

Closer.

Nyx slowed slightly.

Then—

Stopped.

Kael nearly walked into him. "Alright, that's twice now. What is it?"

Nyx didn't answer.

Slowly, he lifted his gaze.

And saw it.

The path ended.

Not gradually.

Not with warning.

It simply—

Stopped.

Where there should have been more mountain, more terrain, more ground—

There was nothing.

A massive void stretched out before them, cutting through the land like a wound that had never healed. The edges were jagged, uneven, as though reality itself had been torn apart and left exposed.

Kael stared at it for a long moment.

"…That's not natural," he said.

Nyx stepped closer.

"It's here."

The void wasn't empty.

That was the first thing Nyx realized.

It looked like darkness, but it wasn't still. It shifted subtly, almost like a thick liquid, its surface rippling in slow, unnatural patterns.

Kael crossed his arms, his expression tightening. "…Please don't tell me that's where we're going."

Nyx didn't hesitate.

"It is."

Kael let out a quiet laugh. "Yeah… of course it is."

The closer Nyx stepped, the stronger the pull became.

But something was different this time.

It wasn't pulling him to consume.

It was pulling him to approach.

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…This isn't like the others."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "You've said that before. It keeps getting worse every time."

Nyx didn't respond.

Because now—

He understood why.

The air shifted.

A low hum began to spread outward from the void, vibrating through the ground beneath their feet. It wasn't loud, but it was impossible to ignore. It resonated through the body, through the bones, through the mind.

Kael stiffened. "…You feel that?"

"Yes."

The darkness below began to move.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Not like something reacting.

Like something awakening.

Nyx stood still, his gaze fixed on the shifting surface.

The Eclipse energy within him reacted instantly.

But not with resistance.

Not with conflict.

With recognition.

"…Closer…"

The voice returned.

Clearer now.

Stronger.

Kael took a step back. "…Yeah, no. I don't like that."

Nyx didn't move.

Because the pull had changed.

It wasn't hunger anymore.

It was invitation.

The surface of the void rippled again, more violently this time. The darkness twisted inward, compressing, then expanding outward as something beneath it began to take shape.

Not fully visible.

Not fully formed.

But massive.

Far larger than anything Nyx had encountered before.

Kael's voice dropped slightly. "…That's not something you fight."

Nyx's expression remained calm.

"…No."

It wasn't.

The presence grew heavier, pressing outward from the void like a silent wave. The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly, not from force, but from pressure.

Existence itself reacting.

Nyx stepped closer to the edge.

The void responded instantly.

The ripples intensified.

The hum deepened.

Then—

Everything stopped.

The movement ceased.

The sound vanished.

The pressure stabilized.

And in that stillness—

Something appeared.

A single point of light within the darkness.

Small.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

Kael's voice dropped to a whisper. "…Tell me that's not what I think it is."

Nyx's gaze locked onto it.

"It is."

The light sharpened.

Focused.

An eye.

Watching.

Not scanning.

Not searching.

Watching him.

Silence stretched between them.

Long.

Heavy.

Unbroken.

Then—

The voice came again.

Not as a whisper.

Not as a command.

But as something ancient.

Something that had been waiting far longer than Nyx could comprehend.

"…You have come."

Nyx didn't flinch.

Didn't step back.

Didn't speak.

But inside—

The Eclipse reacted violently.

Not in conflict.

But in response.

Because whatever lay within that void—

Was not a fragment.

It was something whole.

And it had been waiting—

For him.
