Chapter 39 - The night that didn't stay silent

The night did not fall.

It settled.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

As if the mountain itself had decided to close its eyes.

The last trace of sunlight faded behind the jagged peaks, and with it, whatever faint sense of normalcy had remained in the air disappeared completely. Darkness didn't simply replace the light—it spread, seeping into every crack in the stone, every hollow space between the cliffs, every corner that sight could not fully reach.

And with it came silence.

Not the quiet of rest.

But the quiet of something watching.

Nyx sat near the edge of a broken ridge, his posture still, his gaze fixed ahead into the endless stretch of blackened terrain. From a distance, he looked calm, composed even.

But inside—

Nothing was calm.

The Eclipse had begun to move.

Not violently.

Not uncontrollably.

But deliberately.

It was no longer reacting to him.

It was acting on its own.

Nyx's fingers tightened slightly against the rough surface of the stone beneath him. He didn't look at his hand, but he could feel it—the faint pulse beneath his skin, subtle but undeniable.

A rhythm.

Not his own.

Behind him, Kael shifted, clearly unable to ignore the tension any longer.

"…You've been like that for a while now," Kael said, his voice cutting through the silence. "Staring into nothing, not talking… that's usually when things go very wrong."

Nyx didn't respond immediately.

Because for once—

He didn't know how to explain what he was feeling.

"…It's different tonight," Nyx said finally.

Kael frowned. "Different how?"

Nyx exhaled slowly.

"…It's not waiting for me anymore."

That answer didn't help.

Kael stood up fully now, brushing dust from his clothes as he walked closer. "Yeah, I'm going to need you to be a bit clearer than that."

Nyx lifted his hand slightly.

This time—

He looked at it.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

Without any command—

A thin ripple of black-and-silver energy surfaced across his skin.

It didn't flicker.

It didn't resist.

It stayed.

Kael's eyes narrowed. "…Okay, that's new."

Nyx clenched his hand slightly.

The energy responded instantly, tightening, compressing—

Then fading.

"I didn't call it," Nyx said quietly.

Kael crossed his arms slowly, his expression sharpening. "…So it just decided to show up on its own?"

Nyx nodded once.

And that—

Was the problem.

The wind that had briefly returned earlier in the day had vanished again, leaving behind a stillness that felt heavier than before. Even the air seemed reluctant to move, as though it were avoiding something.

Nyx closed his eyes briefly.

And that was when he felt it.

Not the Eclipse.

But something beneath it.

A presence.

Not external.

Internal.

And aware.

Nyx's eyes opened immediately.

"…No," he muttered.

Kael frowned. "No what?"

Nyx didn't answer.

Because the moment he focused—

It responded.

A faint pressure brushed against his mind.

Not invasive.

Not aggressive.

Curious.

Then—

A voice formed.

Not spoken.

Not heard.

But understood.

"…What do you feel?"

Nyx froze.

Kael stepped forward instantly. "Nyx?"

Nyx raised his hand slightly, signaling him to stop.

"…It's communicating," he said quietly.

Kael's expression darkened. "That thing from the void?"

Nyx shook his head slowly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…This is closer."

The Eclipse pulsed faintly beneath his skin.

"…Answer…"

Nyx's breathing slowed.

Not by choice.

But by influence.

The question lingered.

What did he feel?

Fear?

No.

Not exactly.

Control?

Not entirely.

Nyx's fingers twitched slightly.

"…Uncertainty," he said.

The moment the word formed—

The Eclipse reacted.

The air around him shifted.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

But subtly.

The shadows stretched.

The space around his body dimmed slightly, as though reality itself was pulling back from him.

Kael stepped back instinctively. "Yeah… I don't like that at all."

Nyx didn't move.

Because now—

He understood something important.

The Eclipse wasn't asking out of curiosity.

It was measuring.

Testing.

Learning.

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Why?"

There was a pause.

Then—

"…To become."

That answer—

Was not reassuring.

Nyx exhaled slowly, trying to steady himself.

"…You don't need my emotions for that."

The Eclipse pulsed again.

"…You are the medium."

Kael frowned deeply. "I don't like the sound of that."

Nyx didn't either.

Because that meant—

This wasn't just power flowing through him.

He was part of the process.

Nyx clenched his fist slightly.

"…Stop," he said.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The Eclipse receded slightly.

But it didn't disappear.

It listened.

And that—

Was worse.

Kael stepped closer again, lowering his voice. "Nyx… you need to shut this down. Completely."

Nyx shook his head.

"…I can't."

Kael's expression hardened. "Then we leave. Now."

Nyx didn't move.

Because something else had just begun.

A second pulse.

Stronger.

Deeper.

It didn't stay contained this time.

It spread.

The ground beneath Nyx's feet shifted slightly—not cracking, not breaking, but changing in texture, as though the stone itself had been subtly rewritten.

Nyx's eyes widened slightly.

"…I didn't do that."

Kael stepped back immediately. "Yeah, that's exactly what I was afraid of."

The Eclipse pulsed again.

"…Not yet…"

Nyx's breath slowed.

That word—

Carried weight.

"Not yet?" Nyx repeated quietly.

The Eclipse didn't respond directly.

But the feeling remained.

Expectation.

Potential.

Nyx looked at his hand again.

For the first time—

He realized something terrifying.

This wasn't just growing stronger.

It was becoming more precise.

More intentional.

Aware.

Kael spoke again, more urgently now. "Nyx, we're done here. Whatever this place is doing to that thing inside you—we don't stay long enough to find out the end result."

Nyx turned slightly.

"…It's not just this place."

Kael froze.

"…What?"

Nyx's voice lowered.

"…It's me."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Because that meant—

Wherever he went—

This would follow.

The Eclipse pulsed again.

One final time.

And then—

It asked a question.

Clearer than before.

Sharper.

"…Will you allow evolution?"

Nyx's body went still.

Kael grabbed his shoulder instantly. "Don't even think about answering that."

But Nyx wasn't looking at him.

He was looking at his own hand.

At the faint ripple of black-and-silver energy forming again.

Waiting.

Listening.
