Chapter 14 - Episode 14: The Man She Didn’t Know

Darkness swallowed the floor.

Not complete—but enough to distort shapes, to blur certainty, to make every sound sharper than it should be.

Sasmita stood still, her senses heightened, every instinct alert.

The footsteps grew closer.

Heavy.

Unhurried.

Confident.

Aarav didn't move.

He stood in front of her, just slightly, enough to block her path without making it obvious.

"Stay here," he said quietly.

Sasmita frowned. "What's happening?"

No answer.

Because at that exact moment—

The door burst open.

Three men stepped in.

Not employees.

Not visitors.

Intruders.

Their movements were coordinated, deliberate. Faces partially covered, eyes scanning the room with clear intent.

They weren't here by mistake.

They were here for her.

One of them spotted Sasmita immediately.

"There she is."

The words were enough.

Before they could take another step—

Aarav moved.

Fast.

Not rushed.

Not uncontrolled.

Precise.

He intercepted the first man before he could reach forward, his grip locking onto the man's wrist and twisting it sharply.

A suppressed cry escaped.

The second man lunged.

Aarav turned, blocking effortlessly, his movements fluid, practiced—as if this wasn't new to him.

Sasmita watched—

Frozen.

Because what she was seeing—

Didn't belong to the man she knew.

This wasn't instinct.

This wasn't luck.

This was skill.

Dangerous skill.

Within seconds, the room shifted.

The attackers lost their advantage.

Aarav didn't hesitate.

Didn't waste movement.

Every action had purpose.

Every strike—control.

The third man stepped back, pulling out something from his pocket—

A knife.

Sasmita's breath caught slightly.

"Aarav—"

But he was already moving.

He closed the distance in an instant, disarming the man before the blade could even be used.

The knife clattered to the floor.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Sharp.

The men realized it then.

This wasn't going as planned.

"Move!" one of them shouted.

They didn't stay.

Didn't fight further.

They ran.

And just like that—

They were gone.

The room fell silent again.

The only sound left—

Was Sasmita's breathing.

Aarav stood still for a moment, his gaze fixed on the door, ensuring no one returned.

Only then did he turn.

And when he did—

Their eyes met.

For a second—

Neither of them spoke.

Because there were no words that fit what had just happened.

Sasmita's gaze searched his face.

Looking for something.

An explanation.

A crack.

But there was nothing.

Only calm.

"How…" she started, her voice quieter than before.

Aarav didn't let her finish.

"You're safe," he said.

That wasn't an answer.

"I didn't ask that," she replied.

Silence.

Her eyes dropped briefly—to his hands.

Steady.

Unaffected.

Not even a tremor.

That wasn't normal.

She looked back at him.

This time—

There was no hesitation.

"Who are you?"

The question came out stronger now.

Clear.

Demanding.

Aarav held her gaze.

Long.

Unmoving.

For a moment—

It felt like he might answer.

Like the truth might finally surface.

But then—

He stepped back.

"You shouldn't be here alone," he said instead.

Deflection.

Again.

Sasmita's jaw tightened slightly.

"This wasn't random," she said.

"They came for me."

Aarav didn't deny it.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

"And you knew," she added.

A pause.

"Not exactly," he said.

"But enough?" she pressed.

Another silence.

This time—

He didn't answer at all.

And that—

Was the answer.

Sasmita exhaled slowly, turning away for a moment.

Her thoughts moved fast.

Faster than she could organize.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Not him.

Not the attack.

Not the situation.

And yet—

One thing was clear.

He wasn't ordinary.

Not even close.

When she turned back—

Her expression had changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something sharper.

Awareness.

"You're involved in something," she said quietly.

"Something dangerous."

Aarav didn't deny it.

Didn't confirm it.

But his silence—

Said enough.

Sasmita looked at him for a long moment.

Then—

"You're not just my contract," she said.

The words came slowly.

Deliberately.

"You're a risk."

For the first time—

Something flickered in Aarav's expression.

Not surprise.

Not denial.

Something deeper.

"Maybe," he said.

The answer didn't calm her.

It only confirmed it.

The distance between them changed again.

Not physical.

But real.

Because now—

Sasmita wasn't just curious anymore.

She was aware.

And Aarav—

Was no longer just a mystery.

He was a danger she hadn't prepared for.
