Chapter 20 - Episode 20: The Line She Couldn’t Cross

The next day didn't begin with peace.

It began with pressure.

From the moment Sasmita stepped into the office, something felt… off.

Not obvious.

Not visible.

But there.

The usual rhythm of the company had shifted slightly. Conversations lowered when she passed. Eyes followed her a second longer than necessary.

Whispers.

Subtle.

Carefully hidden.

She noticed.

Of course she did.

"What happened?" she asked sharply as she entered the conference room.

Silence.

Then one of the senior managers spoke carefully.

"There's… been a leak."

Her expression hardened instantly.

"What kind of leak?"

A brief hesitation.

"Internal data," he said.

"Confidential files."

The words hit like a controlled explosion.

Sasmita's mind moved fast.

Damage.

Impact.

Source.

"Who accessed it?" she asked.

Another pause.

This time—

Longer.

Because the answer—

Was dangerous.

"We're still verifying," he said.

"That's not what I asked."

The room grew tense.

Finally—

Another voice spoke.

Lower.

Careful.

"The access trail… leads to him."

Silence.

Sasmita didn't move.

Didn't react.

But her eyes—

Darkened.

"Him?" she repeated.

No one needed to say the name.

Because everyone already knew.

Aarav.

Minutes later, she stood inside her office, the door closed behind her.

The file lay open on her desk.

Evidence.

Logs.

Time stamps.

Everything pointed in one direction.

Too perfectly.

Too cleanly.

Her fingers pressed lightly against the table.

This wasn't coincidence.

This was designed.

But the question remained—

Was he part of it?

The door opened quietly.

Aarav walked in.

As calm as ever.

As if nothing had changed.

Sasmita looked up slowly.

For a moment—

She said nothing.

Because she needed to see.

His reaction.

His eyes met hers.

And in that second—

Everything else faded.

"There's a problem," she said finally.

Aarav didn't ask what.

"Say it," he replied.

Her gaze sharpened.

"You accessed restricted files last night."

Silence.

No denial.

No surprise.

Just stillness.

"Did you?" she asked.

The question was simple.

But it carried everything.

Trust.

Doubt.

Aarav held her gaze.

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

And that—

Broke something.

Sasmita's breath stilled for a moment.

"You're admitting it?" she said.

"I don't lie," he replied.

"That's not honesty," she said sharply.

"That's confirmation."

Silence.

Her fingers tightened.

"Why?" she asked.

A pause.

"To check something," he said.

"That's not your role," she replied.

"No," he agreed.

Another crack.

"Then why?" she pressed again.

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

And that delay—

Made everything worse.

"Because I needed to," he said finally.

The words felt incomplete.

Because they were.

Sasmita took a step back.

"This is exactly what they wanted," she said quietly.

Aarav's gaze shifted slightly.

"You think I leaked it," he said.

"I don't know what to think," she replied.

And that—

Was the truth.

Silence filled the room again.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Because this time—

It wasn't just about suspicion.

It was about trust.

And trust—

Had cracked.

"You told me to trust you," she said slowly.

Aarav didn't interrupt.

"You asked for time," she continued.

A step closer.

"And now this?"

Her voice didn't rise.

But it didn't need to.

Because the weight behind it—

Was enough.

Aarav looked at her.

For a brief moment—

There was something there.

Not calm.

Not control.

Something deeper.

"I didn't leak anything," he said.

Sasmita held his gaze.

"But you gave them a reason to blame you."

Silence.

Because he couldn't deny that.

Her shoulders stiffened slightly.

"This is my company," she said.

"And I won't let anyone compromise it."

The words were clear.

Final.

Even if—

It meant questioning him.

Aarav stepped forward.

Not aggressively.

But firmly.

"And I won't let anything happen to you," he said.

The statement landed differently.

Not professional.

Not contractual.

Personal.

And that—

Made it worse.

Because it blurred everything.

Again.

Sasmita's eyes flickered for a second.

Then hardened again.

"This isn't about me," she said.

"It is," Aarav replied.

Silence.

Because deep down—

She knew.

Everything happening—

Was about her.

But that didn't make it easier.

"Until I get the full truth," she said finally,

"you stay out of internal systems."

A pause.

"And out of my decisions."

The line was drawn.

Clear.

Cold.

Aarav didn't argue.

Didn't resist.

He only nodded once.

"Fine."

The answer was simple.

But something in it—

Shifted.

Because for the first time—

Distance wasn't just felt.

It was created.

As he turned to leave—

Sasmita spoke again.

"Don't make me regret this."

The words came out softer than she intended.

But they stayed.

Aarav paused.

Just for a second.

Then—

Without turning back—

He replied.

"You already are."

And then—

He walked away.

Elsewhere—

The plan unfolded perfectly.

"She believed it," the associate said.

The man smiled faintly.

"Of course she did."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Now," he said softly,

"we break the rest."

Back in the office—

Sasmita stood alone.

The file still open.

The truth still unclear.

But one thing—

Had changed completely.

This wasn't just a game anymore.

It was a war.

And she had just taken a step—

Against the one person she wasn't ready to lose.
