Chapter 9 - Episode 9: The Beginning of Doubt

The days after the incident did not return to normal.

At least, not for Sasmita.

On the surface, everything remained unchanged.

The Roy Group continued to run with its usual precision. Meetings were held, decisions were made, and every system functioned exactly as it always had.

Perfect.

Controlled.

Predictable.

But beneath that control—

Something had shifted.

It started small.

Almost unnoticeable.

A glance that lasted a second longer than it should.

A thought that returned when it wasn't needed.

A question that refused to fade.

Sasmita noticed it.

And she didn't like it.

Her eyes lifted from the file in front of her, drifting unconsciously toward the glass wall of her office.

Outside—

Aarav sat at his desk.

Calm.

Focused.

As if nothing in the world could disturb him.

He had been like that since the beginning.

Silent.

Composed.

Unpredictable.

But now—

She was paying attention.

And the more she observed—

The less he made sense.

A man who had been sweeping floors just days ago…

Did not speak like that.

Did not think like that.

Did not move like that.

Her fingers tapped lightly against the table.

A habit.

One that only appeared when something bothered her.

Finally, she closed the file.

Enough.

She stepped out of her office.

The moment she appeared, the staff straightened instantly.

But her attention was already elsewhere.

"Aarav."

He looked up.

Immediately.

As if he had been expecting her.

"Yes?"

Sasmita walked closer, stopping just across his desk.

Her gaze steady.

Searching.

"You're adapting too fast," she said.

A faint pause.

"Is that a problem?" he asked.

"It depends," she replied.

"On what you're adapting from."

Silence.

For a brief moment—

The air between them grew heavier.

Aarav leaned back slightly, his expression unchanged.

"I told you," he said calmly, "I learn fast."

Sasmita's eyes narrowed just a fraction.

"That's not learning," she said quietly.

"That's experience."

The words settled between them.

Sharp.

Direct.

For the first time—

She wasn't circling around the question.

She was getting closer.

Aarav held her gaze.

Unmoving.

Unreadable.

"And if it is?" he asked.

The question caught her slightly off guard.

Not because of the words—

But because of the confidence behind them.

"Then it means," she said slowly,

"you're not who you claim to be."

A brief silence followed.

Long enough to matter.

For a moment—

It felt like something might break.

But Aarav only looked at her, his expression calm as ever.

"Does it matter?" he asked.

Sasmita didn't respond immediately.

Because—

For the first time—

She wasn't sure.

It should matter.

It always mattered.

But something about him—

Made it complicated.

"Yes," she said finally.

"It does."

Aarav studied her for a second longer.

Then he nodded slightly.

As if accepting something unspoken.

"Then you should stop asking questions," he said.

Her brows tightened.

"That's not how this works."

"Maybe not for you," he replied.

"But some answers don't come when you demand them."

The calmness in his voice irritated her.

More than anger would have.

Sasmita straightened slightly.

"I don't wait for answers," she said.

"I find them."

A faint smile touched his lips.

Barely visible.

"Then try," he said.

It wasn't a challenge.

Not openly.

But it felt like one.

For a moment—

They stood there.

Neither stepping back.

Neither looking away.

Then Sasmita turned.

The conversation was over.

But the question—

Wasn't.

That night, for the first time—

She didn't ignore it.

Her laptop screen glowed in the dim light of her room.

A single name typed into the search bar.

Aarav.

She waited.

Results appeared.

And then—

Nothing.

No records.

No history.

No identity.

Her fingers stilled on the keyboard.

That wasn't possible.

Everyone had a past.

Everyone had a trace.

But him—

There was nothing.

It was as if he didn't exist before she met him.

Sasmita leaned back slowly, her eyes fixed on the screen.

For the first time—

The doubt became real.

Not just a thought.

Not just a feeling.

A fact.

"Who are you…?" she whispered.

And somewhere—

Not too far away—

Aarav stood by the window, looking out into the same night.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

👉 "Everything is in place."

He read it once.

Then locked the screen.

His expression didn't change.

But his eyes—

Darkened.
