Chapter 20 - Chapter 19:Uncomfortable Attention

The rumor began quietly.

Not loud enough to disrupt the office.

But soft enough to travel from desk to desk like a slow-moving breeze.

Sofia Mirano noticed it the next morning.

She arrived at Rivera Group just before nine, as usual. The lobby was filled with the scent of fresh coffee and the quiet murmur of employees beginning their day.

She greeted the receptionist politely before walking toward her desk.

But two assistants near the elevator glanced at her as she passed.

One whispered something.

The other smiled slightly.

Sofia pretended not to notice.

She placed her bag down and opened her tablet, focusing on Leo Rivera's schedule for the day.

Three meetings.

Two contract reviews.

A video conference with the New York office.

Everything was organized perfectly.

Just the way she liked it.

Her phone buzzed.

Lucy.

Sofia smiled faintly before opening the message.

Lucy:

Good morning.

Lucy:

Important question.

Sofia already knew where this was going.

Sofia:

What is it this time?

Lucy replied instantly.

Lucy:

Are people in your office talking about you and the CEO yet?

Sofia blinked.

Sofia:

Lucy…

Lucy:

That's not a no.

Sofia sighed quietly.

Sofia:

Maybe a little.

Lucy's response came quickly.

Lucy:

I knew it.

Lucy:

Office gossip travels faster than WiFi.

Sofia laughed softly and locked her phone just as Leo arrived.

The elevator doors opened and he stepped out, tall and composed in a dark grey suit.

The subtle shift in the office atmosphere was immediate.

Leo Rivera carried authority without trying.

His gaze scanned the office briefly before settling on Sofia.

"Good morning, Sofia."

"Good morning, Mr. Rivera."

She handed him his coffee.

Black.

No sugar.

No cream.

Leo accepted it, but before turning toward his office, his eyes moved across the room.

Several employees quickly looked back at their computers.

Leo noticed.

He always noticed.

But he said nothing and walked into his office.

Across the room, Vanessa Clarke leaned against the edge of her desk with a thoughtful expression.

She watched Sofia organize the morning files.

Vanessa had always been observant.

And recently, she had started noticing something unusual.

Leo Rivera's attention.

Specifically—

Where it was directed.

Vanessa picked up her tablet and walked toward Sofia's desk.

"Good morning, Sofia."

Sofia looked up politely.

"Good morning, Vanessa."

Vanessa smiled pleasantly.

"Preparing for the big party?"

Sofia nodded.

"Yes."

Vanessa tilted her head slightly.

"You must be excited."

Sofia kept her tone neutral.

"It should be a nice event."

Vanessa leaned casually against the desk.

"I heard you'll be attending with Mr. Rivera."

The words were light.

But the meaning behind them wasn't.

Sofia answered calmly.

"I'm his assistant. It's part of my responsibilities."

Vanessa studied her carefully.

"You seem very calm about it."

Sofia smiled politely.

"I try to stay professional."

Vanessa chuckled softly.

"That's a good habit in this office."

Just then, Leo's office door opened.

"Sofia."

She stood immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Rivera?"

"Bring the quarterly report."

Sofia nodded and walked into his office.

Vanessa watched the door close behind her.

Then she smiled slightly.

"Interesting," she murmured.

Inside Leo's office, Sofia placed the report on his desk.

"The financial department sent the updated numbers."

Leo nodded.

"Thank you."

But as Sofia turned to leave, Leo spoke again.

"Vanessa was speaking to you."

Sofia paused.

"Yes."

Leo leaned back slightly in his chair.

"What did she want?"

Sofia hesitated.

"She was asking about the anniversary party."

Leo's expression remained calm.

"And?"

"She mentioned that I'll be attending with you."

Leo frowned slightly.

"And how did you respond?"

Sofia met his eyes.

"I told her the truth."

Leo waited.

"That I'm your assistant."

Leo nodded slowly.

"That's correct."

But something about the conversation clearly bothered him.

Sofia noticed.

"Is something wrong?"

Leo shook his head.

"No."

But his tone suggested otherwise.

Sofia decided not to push further.

She left the office quietly.

Later that afternoon, the marketing department gathered in the conference room for a presentation.

Leo stood at the front of the room reviewing the proposal with a group of managers.

Sofia sat near the side with her tablet, taking notes.

Halfway through the meeting, Daniel from marketing leaned closer to her.

"Busy day?"

Sofia glanced at him politely.

"Very."

Daniel smiled.

"You should take a break sometime."

Sofia returned her attention to the presentation.

"I'll keep that in mind."

Daniel leaned back in his chair but continued speaking quietly.

"You know, the company party is coming up."

Sofia nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel smiled.

"Would you like to dance?"

Sofia blinked.

Before she could answer—

Leo's voice interrupted.

"Mr. Collins."

Daniel straightened immediately.

"Yes, sir?"

Leo looked directly at him.

"If you have time for conversation, perhaps you can also explain the missing numbers in your department's report."

The room went silent.

Daniel cleared his throat nervously.

"Yes… of course."

Leo continued the presentation calmly.

But Sofia noticed something.

His tone had changed.

And the entire room felt it.

After the meeting ended, employees slowly left the conference room.

Sofia gathered her tablet and notes.

Lucy's message appeared on her phone.

Lucy:

Guess what.

Sofia:

What now?

Lucy:

Your dress is ready.

Sofia smiled.

Sofia:

Already?

Lucy:

Of course.

Lucy:

Come try it again tonight.

Sofia laughed quietly.

Sofia:

You just want to see my reaction.

Lucy:

Correct.

That evening, Sofia arrived at Lucy's boutique again.

Lucy was already waiting near the fitting room.

"I made a few adjustments."

Sofia stepped inside and changed into the dress.

When she walked out, Lucy clapped her hands excitedly.

"Perfect."

Sofia looked at herself in the mirror again.

The blue fabric shimmered softly under the lights.

"I still can't believe you made this."

Lucy grinned.

"I told you. Best friend privilege."

Sofia laughed.

Lucy stepped closer and studied her reflection carefully.

"You're going to break hearts at that party."

Sofia rolled her eyes.

"I just hope I don't trip."

Lucy shook her head.

"Trust me."

She smiled mischievously.

"The only person who's going to have trouble that night… is Leo Rivera."

Across the city, Leo stood in his apartment near the window overlooking the skyline.

The events of the day replayed quietly in his mind.

Daniel leaning toward Sofia.

The invitation to dance.

The way the room had gone silent when Leo interrupted.

He exhaled slowly.

Because the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.

He didn't like seeing other men close to her.

And that realization felt far more dangerous than any office rumor.

Leo picked up his phone, staring at Sofia's contact for a moment.

Then he placed it back down.

The anniversary party was only a week away.

And somehow…

He had a feeling that night would change everything.
