The anniversary celebration continued long into the evening.
Inside the ballroom, the music had grown livelier. Laughter and conversation filled the air as employees relaxed after the formal speeches and presentations. Glasses clinked, waiters moved through the crowd with trays of desserts, and small groups gathered around tables discussing everything from business deals to weekend plans.
But beneath the cheerful atmosphere, something quieter had begun to move through the room.
A whisper.
A look.
A question asked just softly enough to sound harmless.
And it started with Vanessa Clarke.
Vanessa stood near the bar speaking with two senior managers from the finance department. She held her champagne glass elegantly while listening to one of them complain about a delayed report.
Then she casually glanced toward the center of the ballroom.
Leo Rivera had just returned from the balcony.
Sofia walked beside him.
Not too close.
But close enough.
Vanessa tilted her head slightly, as if something had just occurred to her.
"Have you noticed something interesting tonight?" she asked casually.
One of the managers frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Vanessa took a slow sip of champagne before answering.
"Well... I could be wrong."
She paused deliberately.
"But it seems like Mr. Rivera and his secretary are spending quite a bit of time together."
The other manager chuckled.
"She's his assistant. That's normal."
Vanessa smiled politely.
"Of course."
Then she added lightly,
"But I've worked here for five years."
Both men looked at her.
"And I've never seen him dance with an employee before."
The words hung in the air for a moment.
The first manager glanced across the room.
Leo and Sofia were now speaking near one of the tall windows.
They looked... comfortable.
Closer than most bosses and assistants usually appeared.
"Hm," the manager murmured.
Vanessa smiled to herself.
Just like that...
The rumor had taken its first step.
Across the ballroom, Lucy Hemming had just finished telling an exaggerated story to a group of guests when she noticed the subtle shift in the room.
People were glancing toward Sofia.
Whispering quietly.
Lucy narrowed her eyes slightly.
"Oh no."
She turned toward Sofia, who was currently speaking with a group of employees while Leo stood nearby.
Lucy knew that look.
She had seen it many times before in social circles.
Curiosity.
Speculation.
Lucy walked toward Sofia quickly.
"Sofia."
Sofia turned.
"Yes?"
Lucy leaned close to her ear.
"People are talking."
Sofia frowned.
"Talking about what?"
Lucy nodded subtly toward a nearby group of employees who were whispering.
"You."
Sofia blinked.
"Me?"
Lucy's voice dropped slightly.
"And the tall, very serious CEO standing five feet away."
Sofia sighed softly.
"That was bound to happen."
Lucy studied her expression.
"You're surprisingly calm."
Sofia shrugged lightly.
"It's just gossip."
Lucy looked toward Leo.
"I'm not sure he sees it that way."
Leo Rivera noticed it immediately.
He had spent years managing large groups of people.
He understood how office dynamics worked.
And he knew exactly what whispered conversations looked like.
Several employees were glancing toward Sofia.
Then toward him.
Then whispering again.
Leo's expression hardened slightly.
He didn't like rumors.
Especially when they involved someone who worked directly under him.
Because rumors had consequences.
And Sofia didn't deserve to become the center of workplace speculation.
Leo walked toward her.
"Sofia."
She turned.
"Yes?"
"Walk with me."
She blinked.
"Now?"
"Yes."
Sofia nodded politely and followed him away from the group of employees.
Lucy watched them leave and sighed dramatically.
"Well."
One of the guests beside her asked,
"What's happening?"
Lucy smiled knowingly.
"Office politics."
Leo led Sofia toward a quieter section of the ballroom near the large windows overlooking the city.
Once they were away from the crowd, Sofia spoke.
"Something's wrong."
Leo crossed his arms slightly.
"People are talking."
Sofia sighed.
"I noticed."
Leo studied her face carefully.
"Does it bother you?"
Sofia considered the question.
"Not really."
Leo frowned slightly.
"You're the subject of the conversation."
Sofia smiled faintly.
"That happens in offices."
Leo shook his head.
"It shouldn't."
Sofia met his eyes.
"You're not responsible for what people say."
Leo's voice lowered slightly.
"But I am responsible for protecting my employees."
Sofia blinked.
"Protecting me from gossip?"
"Yes."
His answer came without hesitation.
Sofia felt a strange warmth in her chest.
"You don't need to do that."
Leo looked at her carefully.
"I disagree."
For a moment, the tension between them grew quiet again.
But this time, the silence felt different.
More serious.
More personal.
Across the ballroom, Vanessa watched them again.
She noticed the way Leo had taken Sofia aside.
The way they stood slightly closer than necessary while talking.
Vanessa tilted her head thoughtfully.
Her rumor had already begun moving through the room.
And judging by the number of curious glances around the ballroom...
It was working.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
Because she knew something many people didn't.
Rumors had a way of becoming reality if repeated often enough.
Meanwhile, Lucy had joined a group of younger employees near the dessert table.
One of them whispered quietly,
"Is it true?"
Lucy raised an eyebrow.
"Is what true?"
The employee glanced toward Leo and Sofia.
"That they're... involved."
Lucy laughed loudly.
"Oh please."
The group looked relieved.
Lucy took a sip of her drink before adding casually,
"They're just terrible at pretending they don't like each other."
The employees stared at her.
Lucy smiled sweetly.
"Relax. I'm joking."
But her eyes sparkled with amusement.
Back near the window, Sofia leaned lightly against the glass while looking out at the city lights.
"You look stressed," she said gently.
Leo exhaled slowly.
"I don't enjoy unnecessary distractions."
Sofia nodded.
"That's understandable."
Leo looked at her.
"I don't want you to feel uncomfortable at work because of this."
Sofia smiled softly.
"I won't."
Leo studied her expression carefully.
"You're very calm about it."
Sofia shrugged.
"Maybe I'm used to people misunderstanding things."
Leo tilted his head slightly.
"And what do they misunderstand now?"
Sofia met his gaze.
"That we're more than boss and assistant."
Leo didn't answer immediately.
Because for the first time since the rumor began spreading...
He realized something.
The idea of people thinking that...
Didn't bother him nearly as much as it should have.
In fact...
The thought lingered in his mind longer than expected.
Across the room, Vanessa watched the quiet conversation between them.
And her smile slowly returned.
Because something told her the rumor she started tonight...
Might soon turn into something much bigger.
