Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: Under the quiet sky

The music inside the ballroom continued to play softly as guests laughed, talked, and danced beneath the glowing chandeliers.

But for Sofia Mirano, the room had begun to feel a little too warm.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The dance with Leo had left her heart beating faster than usual, and Daniel's sudden invitation had only added to the strange tension in the air.

She needed a moment to breathe.

A quiet space.

Sofia glanced toward the tall glass doors near the far side of the ballroom that led to the hotel's balcony.

Beyond them, the night sky stretched over the glowing city.

She turned toward Leo.

"I think I need some fresh air."

Leo studied her for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"I'll come with you."

Sofia blinked slightly.

"You don't have to."

Leo simply walked toward the balcony doors.

Sofia followed.

Outside, the cool evening air wrapped gently around them.

The balcony overlooked the city skyline, where thousands of lights sparkled against the dark sky like scattered stars.

The distant sounds of traffic and music blended together softly.

Sofia stepped closer to the railing and exhaled.

"That's better."

Leo stood beside her, resting one hand lightly on the polished metal railing.

"It's quieter out here."

Sofia nodded.

"Yes."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence felt comfortable.

Almost peaceful.

After a few seconds, Sofia glanced at him.

"You didn't have to follow me."

Leo's voice was calm.

"I wanted to."

Sofia looked back toward the city lights.

"That's a very CEO answer."

Leo raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Meaning?"

"You make decisions quickly."

Leo considered that.

"Sometimes."

Sofia smiled faintly.

"You always seem very certain about things."

Leo leaned lightly against the railing.

"Not always."

Sofia turned toward him.

"That's hard to believe."

Leo looked at her.

For a moment, the quiet night seemed to wrap around them.

"Some things are less simple than they appear."

Sofia studied his expression.

"Like what?"

Leo hesitated.

For a man who made million-dollar decisions without hesitation, this moment felt surprisingly complicated.

But before he could answer—

The balcony door opened.

Lucy stepped outside holding a glass of champagne.

"Oh."

She stopped when she saw them standing together.

Sofia laughed.

"Lucy."

Lucy raised both hands dramatically.

"I'm leaving."

Sofia rolled her eyes.

"You just got here."

Lucy grinned.

"I didn't realize this was a private romantic balcony moment."

Sofia covered her face with one hand.

"Lucy…"

Lucy winked at Leo.

"Don't let me interrupt."

Then she casually leaned against the railing beside them.

Sofia shook her head.

"You said you were leaving."

Lucy shrugged.

"I changed my mind."

Leo watched the exchange quietly.

Lucy's playful personality was very different from Sofia's calm nature.

But it was easy to see why they were friends.

Lucy glanced between them with curiosity.

"So."

Sofia narrowed her eyes.

"So what?"

Lucy took a sip of champagne.

"How was the dance?"

Sofia hesitated.

"It was nice."

Lucy turned toward Leo.

"And from the CEO's perspective?"

Leo answered calmly.

"She's a good dancer."

Lucy grinned.

"That wasn't the question."

Sofia groaned softly.

"Lucy…"

Lucy laughed.

"Alright, alright."

She leaned back against the railing and looked out at the city lights.

"You know what I like about this view?"

Sofia raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Lucy smiled softly.

"It reminds you how big the world is."

Sofia followed her gaze.

The city stretched endlessly beneath them.

Thousands of lights.

Thousands of lives.

It really did feel big.

Leo spoke quietly.

"But sometimes the important things are much closer."

Sofia glanced at him.

Lucy also noticed the comment.

Her smile grew slightly.

Because Leo's voice had softened in a way she hadn't heard before.

Lucy pushed herself away from the railing.

"Well."

She stretched dramatically.

"I'm going back inside before people start wondering where I disappeared to."

Sofia nodded.

"Try not to start trouble."

Lucy smirked.

"No promises."

Before leaving, Lucy leaned close to Sofia and whispered quietly.

"He's looking at you again."

Sofia whispered back.

"Go inside."

Lucy laughed and disappeared through the balcony doors.

Now the balcony was quiet again.

Sofia sighed softly.

"She's impossible."

Leo almost smiled.

"She seems loyal."

"She is."

Sofia rested her hands on the railing again.

"She's been my best friend for years."

Leo studied her thoughtfully.

"You trust her."

"Yes."

Sofia glanced at him.

"Do you have someone like that?"

Leo looked out at the city.

For a moment, his expression became distant.

"Not really."

Sofia frowned slightly.

"No close friends?"

Leo shook his head.

"Running a company doesn't leave much time for that."

Sofia felt a quiet sadness in his words.

"That must feel lonely sometimes."

Leo didn't answer immediately.

Instead he looked at her.

"Not tonight."

Sofia blinked.

The simple words carried more meaning than she expected.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The distance between them felt smaller again.

Leo stepped slightly closer to her.

Sofia felt her heartbeat quicken.

The soft wind moved a few strands of hair across her face.

Without thinking, Leo reached out and gently brushed them away.

His fingers barely touched her skin.

But the contact felt electric.

Sofia froze slightly.

Leo seemed to realize what he had done.

His hand slowly lowered.

"I'm sorry."

Sofia shook her head softly.

"It's okay."

Their eyes met again.

And suddenly the quiet balcony felt very small.

Very personal.

Inside the ballroom, the music swelled as another song began.

But out here…

The world seemed to pause.

Neither of them moved for several seconds.

Then the balcony door opened again as a group of guests stepped outside laughing.

The moment broke.

Sofia stepped back slightly.

"We should probably go back inside."

Leo nodded slowly.

"Yes."

But as they walked toward the doors, both of them knew something had changed.

The quiet moment beneath the night sky had shifted something between them.

Something neither of them could easily ignore anymore.

Across the ballroom, Vanessa Clarke noticed them returning together.

And the thoughtful look in her eyes returned.

Because whatever had happened out on that balcony…

It had brought them even closer.

And Vanessa was beginning to wonder just how far this story would go.
