Breakfast was quiet and peaceful.
A little too peaceful.
Elena had made eggs and toast and there was fresh coffee and the morning papers were folded neatly at the corner of the table where Lucien always put them after he'd read the first section.
Everything was exactly as it usually was. We sat across from each other and ate and talked about the Harlow Biochem chain he'd confirmed overnight and the board meeting scheduled for Thursday and a logistics update from the Carter Group project team.
Everything was normal and professional. It was almost too funny.
It was almost funny because I couldn't stop thinking about what happened last night. Every conversation felt normal on the surface, but I was aware of the tension between us.
Not the physical distance. The other kind.
