CHAPTER 021: THE WATCHER IN THE WALLS
That same night, after Dominic and I put Luca to bed—hugging and kissing him goodnight—we quietly left his room.
"Sleep well, champ," Dominic said softly, brushing Luca's hair back.
"Goodnight, Daddy… Mommy," Luca murmured sleepily.
"Goodnight, baby," I whispered, pulling the blanket up for him.
We closed the door gently behind us.
On our way to our room, the silence between us didn't last.
"I'm running my own scan," I said.
Dominic looked up from his laptop as soon as we entered. "I already have a team on it," he replied.
I didn't stop walking. "The same team that missed a twelve-minute wipe on a system you personally vetted?" I shot back.
He frowned slightly. "Aria—"
"So yes," I cut in, setting my tablet down and pulling up my interface. "I'm running my own scan."
He went quiet.
Not the kind of quiet that meant agreement.
The kind of quietness that meant he was deciding whether to push back.
