Chapter 8 - The Journal’s Warning

Kai didn't remember running home.

He remembered the cold. He remembered the flickering streetlights. He remembered the Null standing at the end of the road, its hollow gaze fixed on him like a predator studying prey.

But everything after that was a blur.

Leon practically dragged him up the stairs to the apartment, muttering curses under his breath the entire time. Kai barely heard him. His mind was still stuck on the shadow. The cold. The way the Null didn't move, didn't blink, didn't breathe.

It just watched.

Leon slammed the apartment door shut behind them and locked it. Twice. Then he shoved a chair under the handle for good measure.

Kai blinked. "Does that… help?"

Leon pointed at the door dramatically. "It helps my sanity."

Kai wasn't convinced.

Leon paced back and forth across the living room, running his hands through his hair. "Okay. Okay. Okay. That was not normal. That was not remotely normal. That was the opposite of normal. That was—"

Kai whispered, "A Null."

Leon froze mid‑pace. "A what?"

Kai swallowed. "A… Null."

Leon stared at him. "Kai. Buddy. Pal. You can't just drop a creepy name like that and not explain it."

Kai looked down. "I… can't explain it."

Leon threw his hands up. "Of course you can't."

Kai didn't respond.

Leon sighed and sat beside him on the couch. "Look. I'm not gonna pretend I'm not freaking out. Because I am. I'm freaking out so hard I might ascend to another plane of existence. But…"

He nudged Kai's shoulder.

"…you're not alone."

Kai blinked. "I… know."

Leon grinned weakly. "Good. Because if some shadow monster is stalking you, I'm not letting you deal with it alone. I'm too handsome to die, but I'll risk it."

Kai stared. "Why would your appearance matter?"

Leon groaned. "Kai. Please."

Kai didn't understand.

But he appreciated it.

More than he could say.

Aika didn't sleep either.

She sat on her bed, the journal open in her lap, the pages glowing faintly in the dim light of her room. Her hands trembled as she traced the fresh ink.

"He is being watched."

She swallowed hard.

She didn't know who "he" was supposed to be. She didn't know why the journal wrote that. She didn't know why the pages felt warm beneath her fingertips.

But she had a feeling.

A terrible, sinking feeling.

She turned the page.

More words appeared.

Slowly. Deliberately. As if the journal were thinking.

"The shadow has crossed the boundary."

Aika's breath caught.

She whispered, "What boundary?"

The ink rippled.

"The one that should never break."

Aika snapped the journal shut.

Her heart pounded.

Her grandmother had told her stories. Strange stories. Stories about worlds beyond their own. Stories about shadows that didn't belong. Stories about a tower that kept the worlds apart.

She always thought they were fairy tales.

Now she wasn't so sure.

She stood and paced the room, clutching the journal to her chest. Her mind raced. Her hands shook. She didn't know what to do. She didn't know who to talk to.

Her mother wouldn't believe her.

Her friends wouldn't understand.

But Kai…

Kai had looked terrified at the amusement park. Kai had seen something she couldn't. Kai had reacted like someone who recognized the shadow.

Aika swallowed.

She needed to talk to him.

Tomorrow.

She would talk to him tomorrow.

She sat on the edge of her bed and opened the journal again.

The ink shimmered.

A new line appeared.

"Do not let him face it alone."

Aika closed the journal gently.

"I won't," she whispered.

Kai woke up to the smell of something burning.

He sat up instantly.

Leon was in the kitchen, waving a towel at the smoke alarm.

"IT'S FINE! I'M FINE! EVERYTHING IS FINE!"

Kai blinked. "Leon… what are you doing?"

Leon pointed at the pan. "I was making eggs."

Kai stared at the blackened mess. "Those are not eggs."

Leon sighed. "I know."

Kai tilted his head. "Why did you burn them?"

Leon threw the towel onto the counter. "Because I'm stressed, Kai! Stress cooking is a thing!"

Kai frowned. "But you didn't cook. You burned."

Leon pointed at him. "Not helping."

Kai nodded. "Sorry."

Leon sighed dramatically. "It's fine. I'll just… buy breakfast."

Kai blinked. "You can buy breakfast?"

Leon stared at him. "Kai. You can buy anything."

Kai looked horrified. "Even people?"

Leon choked on air. "NO! NOT PEOPLE! WHAT—WHY WOULD YOU—Kai, oh my god."

Kai looked confused. "You said anything."

Leon grabbed his head. "I'm losing brain cells."

Kai wasn't sure what brain cells were, but he didn't think losing them was good.

They walked to the café together.

Kai stayed close to Leon, scanning every shadow, every alley, every reflection. The cold feeling from last night lingered in his bones. He couldn't shake it.

Leon noticed.

"Hey," he said softly. "You're safe. It's daytime. Nothing creepy happens in the daytime."

Kai blinked. "That's not true."

Leon froze. "Kai. Please. I'm trying to cope."

Kai nodded. "Sorry."

Leon sighed. "It's fine. Just… don't say ominous things before coffee."

Kai didn't know what ominous meant, but he nodded anyway.

Aika was already at the café when they arrived.

She looked exhausted. Dark circles under her eyes. Hair slightly messy. But when she saw Kai, she straightened.

"Kai," she said softly. "Can we talk?"

Leon raised an eyebrow. "Oho? What's this? A secret meeting?"

Aika glared. "Leon."

Leon held up his hands. "Fine. I'll go… do something. Somewhere else."

He wandered off, muttering about being unappreciated.

Aika turned back to Kai.

"Last night," she said quietly. "What you saw… I think it's real."

Kai stiffened. "You… believe me?"

Aika nodded. "The journal wrote something."

Kai's breath caught. "What did it say?"

Aika hesitated.

Then she opened the journal.

Kai stared at the words.

"He is being watched."

"The shadow has crossed the boundary."

"Do not let him face it alone."

Kai felt cold.

Aika closed the journal. "Kai… what are these shadows?"

Kai swallowed. "They're… Nulls."

Aika frowned. "What are Nulls?"

Kai looked down. "They're… not from here."

Aika's eyes widened. "Like… another world?"

Kai hesitated.

Then nodded.

Aika exhaled shakily. "My grandmother… she used to tell me stories about other worlds. I thought they were just stories."

Kai shook his head. "They're real."

Aika looked at him. "And the Nulls… they're from your world?"

Kai nodded again.

Aika's voice softened. "Kai… why are they following you?"

Kai didn't know how to answer.

He didn't know how to explain.

He didn't know how to tell her that the Nulls weren't just following him.

They were hunting him.

Aika touched his arm gently. "You don't have to tell me everything. But… you're not alone. I'm here. Leon's here. We'll help you."

Kai blinked.

He didn't know what to say.

He didn't know how to respond to kindness.

He didn't know how to accept it.

But he nodded.

Aika smiled softly.

Leon popped up behind them. "Okay! I gave you two five minutes. What's the verdict? Are we fighting monsters? Are we running away? Are we forming a magical trio? Do I get powers?"

Aika sighed. "Leon—"

Leon gasped. "Aika. Please. Let me have this."

Kai blinked. "You want powers?"

Leon pointed at him. "Kai. If you get chased by shadow monsters, I deserve at least one cool ability."

Kai frowned. "That's not how it works."

Leon groaned. "Of course it's not."

Aika laughed.

Kai didn't understand.

But he liked the sound.

The café opened.

Customers came in.

Kai tried to focus.

But the cold feeling wouldn't leave.

Every time he passed the window, he felt watched.

Every time he looked at the shadows, he expected to see a Null.

Every time the lights flickered, his heart jumped.

Aika noticed.

Leon noticed.

But neither pushed him.

Around noon, Aika approached him quietly.

"Kai," she whispered. "The journal wrote something new."

Kai stiffened. "What?"

Aika opened the journal.

Fresh ink shimmered on the page.

"The tower stirs."

Kai felt his blood run cold.

Aika whispered, "What tower?"

Kai swallowed.

He knew.

He didn't want to know.

But he knew.

"The clock tower," he said softly.

Aika's eyes widened. "The abandoned one?"

Kai nodded.

Aika looked at the journal again. "Why is it waking up?"

Kai didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

But he had a feeling.

A terrible feeling.

The Nulls weren't the only thing crossing the boundary.

Something else was waking.

Something older.

Something dangerous.

Aika closed the journal gently.

"Kai," she whispered. "Whatever's happening… we'll face it together."

Kai looked at her.

At Leon.

At the two people who had somehow become his anchors in a world he didn't understand.

He nodded.

But deep inside, he knew the truth.

The tower was waking.

The Nulls were crossing.

And the world was beginning to crack.
