Chapter 7 - After the Flicker

Kai didn't sleep.

He lay awake long after Leon had fallen asleep in the next room, staring at the ceiling, replaying the amusement park over and over in his mind. The lights flickering. The music warping. The cold that seeped into his bones. And the Null—standing there, half-hidden behind the Ferris wheel, watching him with those hollow, empty eyes.

He turned onto his side.

The room was dark, but not dark enough. The streetlights outside cast faint orange lines across the floor. Shadows stretched across the walls, shifting whenever a car passed. Kai watched them carefully, half-expecting one to move on its own.

He hated that he expected it.

He hated that he wasn't wrong to expect it.

He closed his eyes.

The Null's silhouette burned behind his eyelids.

He opened them again.

No sleep tonight.

He sat up slowly, rubbing his face. His body felt heavy, like he'd been running for hours. His chest ached. His hands trembled. He didn't know if it was fear or exhaustion or both.

Probably both.

He stood and walked to the window.

The city was quiet. A few cars passed. A couple walked down the sidewalk, laughing softly. A cat darted across the street. Everything looked normal.

But Kai knew better.

He pressed his forehead against the glass.

"Why won't you leave me alone…"

His breath fogged the window.

He wiped it away.

And froze.

A faint ripple moved across the glass.

Not outside.

Inside the reflection.

Kai stumbled back, heart slamming against his ribs.

But when he looked again—

Nothing.

Just his reflection.

Just the room.

Just shadows.

He exhaled shakily and backed away from the window.

He didn't sleep.

Not even for a moment.

Morning came too quickly.

Leon burst into the room with the energy of someone who had slept like a rock and had no idea what trauma was.

"Rise and shine, Kai! We've got work! And pastries! And caffeine! And—"

He stopped.

Kai was sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor.

Leon frowned. "Dude… did you sleep?"

Kai shook his head.

Leon sighed dramatically. "Bro. You're gonna die at this rate."

Kai didn't respond.

Leon softened. "Hey. Look at me."

Kai looked up.

Leon crouched in front of him. "We're gonna figure this out. Whatever that… thing was last night? We'll deal with it. Together."

Kai swallowed. "You saw it."

Leon hesitated. "I… saw something. Not like you did. But enough to know you're not crazy."

Kai didn't know if that made him feel better or worse.

Leon stood and clapped his hands. "Alright! Shower. Clothes. Food. Let's go."

Kai blinked. "Food?"

"Yes, Kai. Food. Humans eat food."

Kai frowned. "I know that."

Leon smirked. "Do you?"

Kai glared weakly.

Leon grinned. "There he is."

The café was quiet when they arrived.

Aika was already there, wiping down the counter. She looked tired—more tired than yesterday—but when she saw them, she offered a small smile.

"Morning."

Leon waved dramatically. "Good morning, Aika! You look like you slept three hours and fought a demon in your dreams."

Aika blinked. "I… didn't fight anything."

Leon leaned toward Kai. "See? She's in denial."

Kai didn't know what denial meant, but he nodded anyway.

Aika sighed. "You two are impossible."

Leon gasped. "Impossible? Us? Aika, I'm hurt."

Kai tilted his head. "Are you actually hurt?"

Leon stared at him. "Kai. It's a figure of speech."

Kai frowned. "Your bed also speaks."

Aika covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Leon groaned. "I swear, one day I'm going to throw you into a dictionary."

Kai blinked. "What is a dictionary?"

Leon threw his hands up. "Aika, help me."

Aika smiled. "It's a book."

Kai nodded. "Oh. Why would you throw me into a book?"

Leon walked away muttering something about losing brain cells.

Aika laughed softly.

Kai felt something warm in his chest.

Work was slow.

A few customers came in, ordered coffee, and left. Kai tried to focus on steaming milk and wiping tables, but his mind kept drifting back to the amusement park. The flickering lights. The Null. The cold.

Aika noticed.

She always noticed.

She approached him quietly. "Kai… are you okay?"

Kai hesitated. "I… don't know."

Aika nodded. "You don't have to talk about it. But… if you want to, I'll listen."

Kai looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Her eyes were tired. Her shoulders tense. Her hands trembling slightly. She was hurting too. Different pain. Different reasons. But pain all the same.

Kai swallowed. "Thank you."

Aika smiled softly. "Anytime."

Leon popped up behind them. "Are you two bonding without me?"

Aika rolled her eyes. "Leon—"

Leon gasped dramatically. "Aika. You wound me."

Kai blinked. "Where?"

Leon stared at him. "Kai. Please."

Aika laughed again.

Kai didn't understand half of what was happening, but he liked the sound of her laugh.

Around noon, the café got busier.

A group of students came in, loud and energetic. A couple ordered pastries. An old man sat by the window reading a newspaper. Kai tried to keep up, but the noise made his head spin.

Aika noticed.

She stepped beside him. "You can take a break if you need to."

Kai shook his head. "I can… try."

Aika nodded. "Okay. But if you feel overwhelmed, tell me."

Kai didn't know what overwhelmed meant, but he nodded anyway.

Leon leaned over the counter. "Kai, table five wants water. Don't spill it."

Kai grabbed a glass.

He walked carefully.

Very carefully.

Too carefully.

He moved like someone carrying a bomb.

Aika watched, amused.

Leon whispered, "Bro, it's water, not a live grenade."

Kai frowned. "What is a grenade?"

Leon choked on air.

Aika laughed so hard she had to turn away.

Kai didn't understand.

But he liked making them laugh.

He liked being here.

He liked… this.

Even if the shadows still felt wrong.

Even if the Nulls were still watching.

Even if the world wasn't safe.

This moment felt safe.

And that was enough.

For now.

The afternoon passed quietly.

But something felt off.

Aika kept glancing at the window.

Kai kept feeling cold.

Leon kept pretending everything was fine.

Around four, Aika excused herself to the back room.

Kai followed a few minutes later, carrying a box of cups.

He stopped when he saw her.

She was sitting on a stool, holding the journal.

The journal.

The one that wrote on its own.

The one that shouldn't exist.

Aika didn't notice him at first.

She stared at the open page, her hands trembling.

Kai stepped closer. "Aika…?"

She jumped, snapping the journal shut. "Kai! I—sorry. I didn't hear you."

Kai frowned. "Are you okay?"

Aika hesitated.

Then she opened the journal again.

Kai's breath caught.

Words were written across the page.

Fresh ink.

Still shimmering.

"He is being watched."

Aika swallowed. "Kai… I think this is about you."

Kai's chest tightened. "Why?"

Aika shook her head. "I don't know. But… the journal only writes when something important is happening."

Kai stared at the words.

He is being watched.

He felt cold.

Aika touched his arm gently. "Kai… what happened last night?"

Kai hesitated.

Then he told her.

Not everything.

Not the portal. Not his mother. Not the world collapsing.

But the Null.

The flickering lights. The cold. The feeling of being hunted.

Aika listened quietly.

When he finished, she exhaled shakily. "Kai… I believe you."

Kai blinked. "You do?"

Aika nodded. "My grandmother… she used to tell me stories. Strange stories. Stories I thought were just fairy tales. But now… I'm not so sure."

Kai looked at her.

She looked at him.

Two broken souls.

Two tangled fates.

Leon burst into the room. "Guys! Emergency!"

Aika jumped. "What happened?"

Leon pointed dramatically toward the front. "A customer spilled an entire latte on table three and is now crying."

Aika blinked. "Crying?"

Leon nodded. "Like, full-on anime tears."

Aika sighed. "Okay. I'll handle it."

She stood and walked out.

Leon turned to Kai.

Then to the journal.

Then back to Kai.

"What," he said slowly, "is that creepy book?"

Kai swallowed. "It's… Aika's."

Leon narrowed his eyes. "And why does it look like it wants to eat my soul?"

Kai didn't know how to answer.

Leon sighed. "Okay. Fine. I won't ask. Yet."

Kai nodded.

Leon pointed at him. "But one day, you're telling me everything."

Kai wasn't sure he could.

But he nodded anyway.

The rest of the shift passed quietly.

Too quietly.

Kai felt the cold again.

Aika kept glancing at the journal.

Leon kept pretending nothing was wrong.

When they closed the café, the sun was setting.

Aika walked with them to the street.

Leon stretched. "Alright! Tomorrow, same time. Same chaos. Same trauma."

Aika smiled weakly. "Goodnight."

Kai watched her walk away.

Leon nudged him. "You like her."

Kai blinked. "I… like working with her."

Leon smirked. "Sure."

Kai frowned. "What does that mean?"

Leon groaned. "Kai. Please."

Kai didn't understand.

But he didn't have time to ask.

Because the streetlights flickered.

Just once.

Then again.

Kai froze.

Leon noticed. "Kai…?"

Kai pointed.

A shadow stood at the end of the street.

Still.

Silent.

Watching.

Leon's breath caught. "Oh hell no."

Kai whispered, "It's here."

The Null didn't move.

But the air grew cold.

Very cold.

Leon grabbed Kai's arm. "We're going home. Now."

Kai didn't argue.

They ran.

The Null didn't follow.

But it didn't need to.

It had already found him.

And far away, in the abandoned clock tower, gears turned with a grinding sound that echoed through the night.

The tower was waking.

And the world was beginning to crack.
