Chapter 6 - The Night the Lights Flickered

The amusement park looked different at night.

During the day, it was loud and colorful and chaotic. But at night, it felt like another world entirely. Lights shimmered across the rides, casting reflections on the pavement. Music drifted through the air, soft and distant, like a memory. The Ferris wheel turned slowly, its lights blinking in a rhythm that felt almost alive.

Kai stood at the entrance, staring up at the glowing archway. He wasn't sure if he was supposed to feel excited or terrified. Probably both. Mostly terrified.

Leon slapped him on the back. "Welcome to the happiest place in Lionel! Well, second happiest. The happiest is my bed on a Sunday morning."

Kai blinked. "Why would your bed be happy?"

Leon stared at him. "It's a figure of speech."

Kai frowned. "Your bed can speak?"

Aika covered her mouth to hide a laugh. Leon groaned loudly enough to draw a few stares.

"Bro. Please. I'm begging you. Don't do this to me in public."

Kai tilted his head. "Do what?"

"Be… you."

Kai wasn't sure if that was an insult or a compliment.

Aika stepped between them before Leon could collapse dramatically onto the pavement. "Come on. Let's just walk around first."

They entered the park together. The air smelled like fried dough and caramel. Children ran past holding glowing sticks. A group of teenagers posed for photos near the fountain. A couple shared cotton candy under a string of lights.

Kai watched everything with wide eyes.

It was overwhelming. It was loud. It was bright. It was… alive.

He wasn't used to alive.

Leon bought cotton candy and shoved it into Kai's hands. "Eat."

Kai stared at the fluffy pink mass. "It looks like a cloud."

"Yeah, well, don't try to sit on it."

Kai poked it. His finger sank into the sugar. He recoiled. "It melted."

"That's what it does."

"Why?"

Leon threw his hands up. "Because it's sugar! That's how sugar works!"

Kai wasn't convinced.

Aika smiled softly. "Just try it."

Kai hesitated, then took a small bite.

His eyes widened. "It… disappears."

Leon slapped his forehead. "Yes. That's the point."

Kai took another bite. Then another. Then another.

Aika laughed. "I think he likes it."

Kai didn't answer. He was too busy trying to figure out how something could be solid and not solid at the same time.

They walked deeper into the park. The lights grew brighter. The music grew louder. The crowd thickened. Kai stayed close to Leon and Aika, his shoulders tense, his eyes darting around.

Aika noticed. "If it's too much, we can leave."

Kai shook his head. "No. I can… try."

Leon grinned. "That's the spirit! Now, first ride—"

"No," Kai said immediately.

"You didn't even let me finish!"

"No."

"It could be something gentle!"

"No."

Aika stepped in. "Maybe we should start with something slow."

Leon sighed dramatically. "Fine. The merry-go-round."

Kai blinked. "The spinning horse thing?"

"Yes," Aika said.

Leon muttered, "I can't believe this is my life."

They approached the merry-go-round. It was lit with warm golden lights, the horses painted in bright colors. Children laughed as they went around in circles. The music was soft and cheerful.

Kai stared at it like it was a dangerous beast.

Aika nudged him gently. "It's safe."

Kai wasn't convinced.

Leon shoved him lightly. "Get on."

Kai climbed onto a horse with the stiff posture of someone preparing for battle. Aika sat on the horse beside him. Leon took the one behind them, immediately striking a heroic pose.

The ride started.

Kai grabbed the pole with both hands. "It's moving."

"That's the idea," Leon said.

"It's going up."

"Also the idea."

"It's going down."

"Still the idea."

Kai's eyes widened. "It's doing both."

Aika laughed. "That's how it works."

Kai wasn't sure if he liked it or hated it.

Leon leaned forward. "Bro, relax. You look like you're about to fight the horse."

"I don't trust it."

"It's a wooden horse."

"That's why."

Leon groaned. "I swear, you're gonna kill me."

But Aika was smiling. A real smile. Not the tired, forced ones she'd been wearing for days. A soft, warm smile that made something in Kai's chest loosen.

For a moment, everything felt… normal.

Then the lights flickered.

Kai froze.

Aika's smile faded.

Leon sat up straighter. "Uh… is that supposed to happen?"

The lights flickered again.

The music slowed, warping slightly.

Kai's breath caught.

He knew this feeling.

The air shifted. The temperature dropped. The shadows deepened.

A Null was near.

He scanned the crowd, heart pounding. People laughed, oblivious. Children ran past, unaware. The ride continued to turn, but the lights dimmed with every rotation.

Aika touched his arm. "Kai? What's wrong?"

He didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because he saw it.

Standing between the rides. Half-hidden behind the Ferris wheel. A ripple in the air. A distortion. A shadow that didn't belong.

A Null.

Watching him.

Not attacking. Not moving. Just watching.

Kai's grip tightened on the pole. His breath came in short, sharp bursts.

Aika followed his gaze. "Kai…?"

Leon looked too. "What are you—"

He stopped.

Because for the first time, Leon saw something.

Not the Null itself. But the distortion. The ripple. The wrongness.

"Okay," Leon whispered. "That's… not normal."

Aika's hand trembled. "What is that?"

Kai swallowed hard. "It's… following me."

The lights flickered again.

The music warped further.

The ride slowed.

People began to notice.

A child pointed. "Mommy, the lights are broken."

A teenager laughed nervously. "Is this part of the show?"

Aika grabbed Kai's hand. "We need to get off."

Leon jumped off his horse. "Yeah. Now."

The ride stopped completely.

Kai climbed down, legs shaking. Aika stayed close, her hand still gripping his. Leon stood on his other side, eyes scanning the crowd.

The Null didn't move.

But the air around it pulsed.

Aika whispered, "Kai… what is that thing?"

Kai didn't know how to answer.

He didn't know how to explain.

He didn't know how to breathe.

The Null shifted.

Just slightly.

A ripple of cold washed over the park.

Aika shivered. "I felt that."

Leon swallowed. "Me too."

Kai's heart dropped.

If they could feel it—

The barrier between worlds was thinning.

The Null took one step forward.

Kai stepped back instinctively.

Aika tightened her grip on his hand.

Leon stepped in front of both of them. "Okay. I don't know what that thing is, but it's freaking me out, so we're leaving."

Kai didn't argue.

They moved quickly through the crowd. People were confused, murmuring about the lights, the music, the sudden cold. No one else saw the Null. But everyone felt something was wrong.

Kai glanced back.

The Null was gone.

But the cold remained.

Aika exhaled shakily. "Kai… why is it following you?"

Kai didn't know.

Leon put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey. Whatever this is… we'll figure it out. Together."

Kai looked at him.

At Aika.

At the two people who had somehow become his anchors in a world he didn't understand.

He nodded.

But deep inside, he knew the truth.

The Null wasn't just following him.

It was hunting him.

And the Hollow King was getting closer.

Far away, in the abandoned clock tower, gears turned with a grinding sound that echoed through the night.

The tower was waking.

And the world was beginning to crack.
