Chapter 34 - Chapter 34- The Small Distance Between Us

At first, nothing about Su Ran and Jiang Chen's relationship felt dramatic.

There were no big declarations.

No sudden changes.

No obvious moments that made people stop and stare.

Instead, it was quiet.

Soft.

Like something that had always been there, just finally allowed to exist.

---

The First Time

It happened on a normal day.

They were walking across campus after class, the late afternoon sun stretching their shadows along the path.

Zhao Ming and Lin Yue were ahead, arguing about something as usual.

"You calculated it wrong," Lin Yue said.

"My method is creative," Zhao Ming replied.

"Your method is incorrect."

Behind them, Su Ran and Jiang Chen walked side by side.

Their hands brushed once.

Then again.

Neither of them said anything.

Then, very naturally,

Jiang Chen reached out and gently held her hand.

Not suddenly.

Not dramatically.

Just… like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Su Ran looked down for a second.

Then she didn't pull away.

Instead, she held his hand back.

And they kept walking.

---

Zhao Ming Notices Immediately

Of course, Zhao Ming noticed.

He always noticed everything.

He suddenly stopped walking, turned around, and stared.

Then he pointed dramatically.

"HAND HOLDING," he announced.

"Be quiet!" Su Ran said immediately.

"You didn't even try to hide it," Zhao Ming said.

"We're not hiding," Jiang Chen replied calmly.

Zhao Ming looked personally attacked.

"You are not hiding? In public? In front of me?"

Lin Yue sighed.

"Why are you surprised? They're dating."

"I know they're dating," Zhao Ming said.

"But this is… visual proof."

Su Ran tried not to laugh.

Jiang Chen didn't let go of her hand.

---

Studying Turns Different

Even studying together started to feel different.

One evening in the library, Su Ran was leaning over her notebook, trying to understand something.

"This part doesn't make sense," she said.

Jiang Chen moved his chair closer.

"Let me see."

He explained it slowly, writing step by step like always.

She leaned slightly closer to see better.

Zhao Ming looked up from his book.

"Why are you two sitting so close?" he whispered loudly.

"No one asked you," Jiang Chen said.

Lin Yue didn't even look up.

"Focus on your work," she told Zhao Ming.

"I am focusing on social behavior," he replied.

Su Ran laughed quietly, then went back to her notes.

But this time, when she understood the problem, she smiled and leaned lightly against Jiang Chen's shoulder for a second.

"Got it," she said.

He didn't move away.

---

The Rain Again

Another rainy day.

University seemed to love repeating memories.

They were standing outside a building, waiting for the rain to slow down.

Zhao Ming and Lin Yue ran ahead under an umbrella, leaving the two of them behind again.

"Again?" Su Ran said, watching them.

"He's doing it on purpose," Jiang Chen said.

The rain got heavier.

Without saying anything, Jiang Chen took off his jacket and held it above both of them.

"It's not enough," she said.

"It's fine," he replied.

They stood closer so the jacket could cover both of them.

The space between them disappeared.

For a moment, everything felt quiet.

Just the sound of rain.

Then Su Ran looked at him and smiled.

"You always do things like this."

"What things?" he asked.

"Small things," she said.

"But they're important."

He looked at her for a second, then said quietly,

"They're not small to me."

She didn't reply.

Instead, she leaned forward slightly and hugged him.

Just for a moment.

Not long.

Not dramatic.

But enough to say everything she didn't say out loud.

He hesitated for a second, then gently hugged her back.

---

Zhao Ming's Breakdown

Later, when they caught up with Zhao Ming and Lin Yue, Zhao Ming looked at them suspiciously.

"You are both very quiet," he said.

"That's normal," Jiang Chen replied.

"No," Zhao Ming said.

"This is suspicious quiet."

Lin Yue looked at him.

"You're overthinking."

"I am never overthinking," Zhao Ming said.

He looked at Su Ran.

"Did something happen?"

"No," she said.

He looked at Jiang Chen.

"Did something happen?"

"No," Jiang Chen replied.

Zhao Ming crossed his arms.

"I will find out eventually," he said.

"You won't," Jiang Chen replied.

"I always do," Zhao Ming said confidently.

The Small Things

Days passed.

And the small things kept happening.

Walking side by side with their hands brushing until they held hands without thinking.

Sharing food without asking.

Waiting for each other after class.

Leaning closer during conversations.

Quiet smiles that didn't need explanations.

Nothing big.

Nothing dramatic.

But everything felt different.

---

A Quiet Realization

One evening, Su Ran sat on a bench while waiting for Jiang Chen.

She watched students walk past, couples talking, friends laughing, people rushing to class.

Then Jiang Chen walked toward her.

She smiled immediately without thinking.

He sat next to her.

"Waiting long?" he asked.

"No," she said.

There was a small pause.

Then she said softly,

"You know… I used to think relationships had to be something big and obvious."

He looked at her.

"But this…" she said,

"This feels better."

He nodded slightly.

"Yeah," he said.

She looked at him and smiled.

"Just walking together, talking, doing normal things…"

He finished quietly,

"Being together."

She nodded.

---

The Last Row Feeling

Later that night, the four of them sat together again, talking and laughing.

Zhao Ming was still loud.

Lin Yue was still calm.

Su Ran was still smiling.

Jiang Chen was still quietly watching them all.

But now, when he looked at Su Ran,

he didn't just feel like she was someone important.

He felt like she was his person.

And as Zhao Ming kept talking too much and Lin Yue told him to be quiet,

Jiang Chen leaned back slightly, a small smile on his face,

and thought quietly,

Somewhere between the last row of a classroom

and the campus of a university,

something simple had turned into something real.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just steady.

Just certain.

Just theirs.
