Chapter 84 - "The Child Of Humanity"(84)

Rain still clung to the neon of Willowbrook like it refused to let the night go. Xarak's red eyes burned under the hood of his oversized jacket as he and Philip slipped through the back alley behind Guardians Headquarters. The vampire-wolf hybrid kept one clawed hand on his friend's shoulder, amber gaze sweeping every shadow.

"Kevin's in there," Philip growled low. "If anyone can hide us from that detective, it's the Rampager."

Xarak's fangs pressed against his lower lip. "Or he turns us in. We're not exactly on the guest list."

They reached the reinforced side door. Philip knocked once—hard—then twice soft, the old code Grug had once muttered in a half-rotten joke. The door cracked open. Kevin Leister stood there, Mythical Matrix faintly glowing under his shirt like a second heartbeat. Wyatt hovered just behind him, eyes sharp with that quiet paranoia that never fully left.

Kevin's voice was flat. "You two look like hell. Get in before Ava Reyes circles back."

They stepped inside. The main hall still smelled of leftover birthday cake and gun oil. Most of the teenagers were scattered across the couches and tables: Bandile floating a half-eaten sandwich in mid-air, Koa murmuring to the faint outlines of his beast spirits, Amadou refreshing scholarship emails on a cracked tablet. Carlton argued with Henrik about graduation suits. Lil Micah sat cross-legged on the floor, drawing symbols that pulsed faintly.

Near the far window, Bella leaned against Bangu's side. Her hawk feathers had mostly receded, but one stubborn primary still brushed his shoulder every time she shifted. Bangu's arm rested loosely around her waist, thumb tracing slow circles against her hip. Their voices stayed low, almost private.

"You still smell like ozone after the last fight," Bella murmured, a small smile tugging at her mouth.

Bangu's answering grin was rare and soft. "You still smell like feathers and stubbornness. I'm not complaining."

She tilted her head against his chest for a moment longer than friendship allowed. No one called them out. In a room full of monsters and miracles, a quiet romantic moment felt almost normal.

Across the hall, Jackson and Sally had claimed the half-collapsed couch near the snack table. Sally's mist curled around Jackson's fingers like playful smoke while he tried (and failed) to keep a straight face. She leaned in, whispered something that made his ears go red, then stole the last cupcake from his hand and bit into it with exaggerated satisfaction. Jackson laughed under his breath, the sound light and teenage and completely out of place in a headquarters that had seen hellfire and time tears.

Jayden Lautalo sat alone at the edge of the command console, staring at a half-finished sketch of Takahashi's face. His pen tapped against the paper in restless rhythm.

"How does an Oni just… walk around like a person?" he muttered to no one. "Takahashi's aura doesn't match the old records. It's wrong. Too quiet. Too human on the surface. I can't figure the mask from the real thing."

No one answered him. The puzzle of the Oni remained unsolved.

Peter Shotstock stood over the large table map with Sasha, Ofentse, Cain, and Rona. Brakash sat nearby on a reinforced chair, Nanuq the polar bear curled at his feet like a living mountain of fur and judgment. Jayse the Caveman leaned against the wall, massive arms crossed. Arthur "Blinkstrike" Muller flickered in and out of existence every few seconds, still restless after the last tear.

Sasha's voice cut through the low murmur. "Brakash arrived mid-battle with no portal signature we recognize. No Glimmer residue. No Matrix flare. Just… appeared. Like the timeline opened a door and shoved him through."

Brakash grunted, the sound ancient and tired. "I remember the snow. Then the sky cracked. Then I was here with the bear. That is all."

Peter exhaled smoke from his cigar. "Another displacement. Same pattern as the others. Something's pulling people from the wrong centuries."

Kevin stepped forward with Xarak and Philip still flanking him. Wyatt stayed close, quiet, watching everything.

Before anyone could demand explanations, the air in the far corner of the hall thickened. A wet, coppery smell flooded the room. Hemostro unfolded from the shadows like a wound given shape—tall, pale, veins glowing dull red under translucent skin. His smile was all teeth and old hunger.

"Little guardians," he rasped. "Still playing house while the cracks widen."

Weapons half-drew. Kevin's Matrix flared. Peter's hand went to the End Blade.

Hemostro raised one long-fingered hand. "Peace. I come with truth, not teeth. Not yet."

His gaze locked on Wyatt.

"You. The quiet one. The boy who never quite belongs. Your essence is not of this fractured world. You are from Earth 0—the Original Normal Earth. The safe one. The one that never shattered. The one that still believes monsters are only stories."

Silence slammed into the room.

Wyatt's face went still. "What?"

Hemostro's laugh was wet and delighted. "You are The Child of Humanity. Born of pure, unbroken human blood on a world that never touched the Shattering. Your veins carry the last true ordinary. One drop of your blood can strip a supernatural of everything that makes them more than human. Turn a vampire into a man who bleeds red and dies. Turn a Wrathborn into a boy who can only throw punches. Turn a god's fragment into dust that remembers being mortal."

Wyatt took a step back. Kevin's hand found his shoulder. The other teenagers stared—Bella's feathers lifting in instinctive alarm, Bangu's grip tightening on her, Jackson's mist freezing mid-curl around Sally's wrist, Jayden's pen snapping in his fingers.

Hemostro's eyes gleamed. "The Pillar wants you more than it wants the Rampager. Because you are the lock that can close every gate… or the key that opens them all by making monsters human again. Your blood is the ultimate rejection of everything this broken universe became."

Xarak's voice cracked. "That's why we came. Something's hunting us. Something that smells the same wrongness on us that it smells on him."

Philip nodded once, claws still half-out. "We need help. Or we're next."

Before anyone could answer, the storefront across the street—an ordinary late-night convenience shop still glowing under rain—exploded outward in a wave of displaced air and gunpowder stench.

A figure stumbled through the shattered glass.

He wore a mud-caked 1926 British uniform, rifle still clutched in white-knuckled hands, helmet dented, face streaked with trench dirt and disbelief. The name stitched on his jacket read **Munson Pound**. He looked twenty, maybe younger, eyes wide with the thousand-yard stare of a man who had just left the Somme or something worse and landed in a world of neon and impossible beasts.

Munson raised the rifle on pure instinct.

"Stay back!" His voice cracked with pure 1926 English. "I'm Private Munson Pound, 2nd Battalion! Identify yourselves or I will fire!"

Nanuq rose with a low warning rumble. Brakash stood slowly, recognizing the scent of another displaced soul. Arthur Blinkstrike teleported in front of the soldier in a violet flash and gently pushed the rifle barrel down.

"Easy, mate. You're a long way from the war. Year's 6079. Or 2026. Depending who you ask. Either way, the trenches are gone."

Munson's legs gave out. He sank to his knees in the rain and broken glass, staring at the polar bear, the half-rotted Grug, the glowing Matrix under Kevin's shirt, the red-eyed Xarak, the mist curling around Sally's hands.

"I was in the store," he whispered. "Buying cigarettes for the lads. Then the walls… folded. And I was here."

Peter's cigar hung forgotten. "Another tear. 1926. World War I, not II—close enough. Same pattern. Same wrongness."

Sasha's fingers flew across the console. "Time displacement confirmed. Residual signature matches Brakash's arrival. Something's punching holes from the past and dumping people into Willowbrook."

Kevin looked from Munson Pound to Wyatt, then to the wide-eyed teenagers filling the hall—Bella still close to Bangu, Jackson's hand still loosely tangled with Sally's, Jayden's broken pen forgotten, Xarak and Philip still breathing hard from the run, Bandile floating debris out of the soldier's way without thinking.

Hemostro's voice drifted through the rain like blood in water.

"The Child of Humanity stands among you. The soldier from the first great war has arrived. The cracks are no longer subtle. Choose quickly, little guardians. Earth 0's blood is either your salvation… or the thing that ends every supernatural forever."

Outside, the rain kept falling.

Inside, Wyatt stared at his own hands as if seeing them for the first time.

The quiet was over.

The next war had already begun writing itself in ordinary blood and impossible time.
