**Chapter 83: "The Boy Who Shouldn't Exist"{83}**

**Willowbrook – Downtown Streets – Night**
Rain turned the neon signs into smeared watercolor.
Detective Ava Reyes moved through the alleys with the quiet focus of someone who had already decided the night would not end without answers. Her badge was clipped to her belt, gun holstered but unclipped. The tip had come from a terrified cashier: a teenage boy with red eyes and too-sharp teeth had been seen near the convenience store where the polar bear incident happened earlier that day.
She turned the corner and finally saw him.
The boy looked fifteen, maybe sixteen. Pale skin, black hair plastered to his forehead by rain, a dark hoodie two sizes too big. When he glanced back and their eyes met, Ava saw the truth in a single heartbeat—
Demon. Vampire.
Both at once.
"Freeze!" she shouted, drawing her weapon. "Hands where I can see them!"
The boy — **Xarak** — didn't freeze.
He ran.
Ava sprinted after him, boots slamming through puddles. Xarak moved too fast for a normal human, vaulting a chain-link fence and cutting through a narrow service corridor. She almost had him when a second figure dropped from a fire escape like a shadow given weight.
**Philip.**
Vampire wolf. Best friend. Protector.
Philip hit the ground in a half-shift — claws out, eyes glowing amber-red, fur already racing across his arms. He slammed into Ava hard enough to send her skidding across wet asphalt, then grabbed Xarak by the collar and yanked him into a side alley.
"Move," Philip growled.
By the time Ava scrambled up and rounded the corner, the alley was empty. Only rain and the fading scent of blood and wet fur remained.
She holstered her gun, jaw tight.
"Next time," she muttered to the empty street.

**Guardians Headquarters – Willowbrook – Same Night**
The main hall was still decorated with half-deflated balloons from Rona's birthday. Cake crumbs littered the table. No one had cleaned up yet.
Kevin, Wyatt, Carlton, Amadou, Bandile, Bella, Henrik, Koa, Lucifer Jr., Zayelle, Amon, Kenshi, and Lil Micah occupied the couches and tables like they lived there (which, increasingly, they did). Carlton was still complaining about graduation suits. Amadou kept refreshing scholarship emails. Bella's hawk feathers had mostly receded, but one stubborn primary still stuck out near her temple.
Peter stood behind Rona with an arm loosely around his waist, both of them pretending the earlier kiss hadn't shifted the entire atmosphere of the room. Sasha sat at the command console, monitoring the residual time-anomaly readings. Ofentse translated three different emergency bands at once. Cain cleaned the End Blade in silence.
Then the front doors opened.
Korg and Grug walked in first, followed by the last people anyone expected to see again.
**Jayse the Caveman** — massive, scarred, wearing a modern tactical vest over animal pelts like it was the most natural thing in the world — ducked under the doorframe. Behind him came **Arthur "Blinkstrike" Muller**, the Teleporting Viking, braid swinging, one hand resting on the axe at his hip, violet eyes already scanning every exit in the room.
Jayse's voice was a deep rumble.
"Heard there was cake. And trouble."
Arthur vanished and reappeared next to the snack table in a violet flicker.
"In that order."
The teenagers stared.
Kevin's Mythical Matrix gave a single interested pulse.
Before anyone could properly react, the side entrance opened again.
Brakash stepped in, still wearing furs that smelled of ancient snow, spear across his back. His polar bear, **Nanuq**, padded in beside him like a very large, very judgmental dog. The bear sniffed the air, locked eyes with Koa's beast spirits for a long second, then sat down with a heavy *whump*.
Grug's rotting face stretched into something like a grin.
"Told you simple never stays simple."
Sasha stood up.
"Alright. New arrivals, old returns, and a time-displaced Himalayan warrior with a polar bear. Someone start talking before the next apocalypse clocks in."
Arthur Blinkstrike stole a leftover cupcake, teleported to the other side of the room, and took a bite.
"We felt the tear. Same way we felt the last war ending. Figured you might need the old crew."
Jayse cracked his neck.
"Also, the dead places are getting loud again. Something under the world is waking up. Thought you'd want to know."
Across the room, Bandile quietly floated a bottle of water over to Brakash. The ancient warrior took it, sniffed it, then drank the entire thing in one go.
Nanuq sneezed. A bag of chips fell over.
Kevin looked at Wyatt.
Wyatt looked at the growing collection of legends, monsters, and survivors filling the headquarters.
"One month until graduation," Carlton muttered under his breath. "This is fine. Everything is fine."
Outside, the rain kept falling.
Somewhere in the dark, Xarak and Philip caught their breath on a rooftop, red and amber eyes reflecting the distant lights of Willowbrook.
And far below every living world, in Purgatory, the fracture Hades had smiled at continued to widen — slow, patient, and inevitable.
The quiet was officially over.
**End of Chapter 83**
