**Chapter 82: "One Month Until Graduation"{82}**
---
Three weeks after the sky stopped burning, Willowbrook tried to act like a normal town again.
It almost succeeded.
The Guardians of Destiny Society had moved their main headquarters into the old abandoned community center on the edge of town — close enough to the high school that the teenagers could reach it in under ten minutes if something went wrong, far enough that the neighbours only complained about the occasional strange lights instead of full-blown apocalypses.
Today the headquarters smelled like cake.
---
**Guardians Headquarters – Willowbrook – Main Hall**
Rona stood in the middle of the room looking deeply uncomfortable.
A slightly lopsided chocolate cake with the number **35** written in messy white icing sat on the table. Someone (probably Ofentse) had stuck a single sparkler in the top that was already half-burned out.
Peter Shotstock leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, pretending he wasn't smiling.
"Happy birthday, pretty boy," Peter said. "You're officially older than my last three relationships combined."
Rona exhaled through his nose. "I hate all of you."
Sasha raised a plastic cup. "To Rona. Still alive. Still dramatic. Still somehow the youngest-looking thirty-five-year-old in the room."
The room laughed. Even Cain cracked a rare smile.
Later, when most people had drifted toward the food, Peter caught Rona alone near the back windows. The two of them stood in comfortable silence for a few seconds.
Then Peter leaned in and kissed him.
It wasn't soft or careful. It was the kind of kiss that had been waiting through hell domains, near-death experiences, and too many nights where neither of them expected to see morning.
When they pulled apart, Rona rested his forehead against Peter's.
"About damn time," he muttered.
Peter just smirked. "You're welcome."
---
Across the room, the teenagers occupied an entire corner like they owned it.
Kevin and Wyatt sat on a folded table, legs swinging. Carlton was already complaining about graduation outfits. Amadou kept checking his phone for scholarship emails. Bandile floated a juice box over to Bella without looking. Henrik cleaned an invisible speck off his rifle case out of habit. Koa, Lucifer Jr., Zayelle, Amon, Kenshi, Lil Micah, and the others filled the space with noise and leftover adrenaline.
Carlton stretched his arms above his head.
"One month until graduation. Feels illegal that we're still alive for it."
Amadou nodded. "My mom already bought the frame for the certificate. She doesn't know I almost died four times last month."
Kevin looked around the room — at the Guardians who had become family, at the teenagers who had become soldiers, at the quiet ordinary sunlight coming through the windows — and for once the Mythical Matrix stayed silent in his chest.
Wyatt bumped his shoulder.
"You're thinking too loud again."
Kevin almost smiled. "Habit."

**Elsewhere – Same Day**
Nathan Moya stood in the dusty heat of **New Rhodesia**, his home country, sleeves rolled up, helping unload crates of medical supplies and clean water. The local kids stared at him like he was something between a celebrity and a ghost. He didn't use illusions once the entire afternoon. He just worked.
In Washington, Devonte Murtizy adjusted the new pin on his lapel — **Vice President of the United States** — while Cohen Washington (still occasionally growing white-gold feathers when stressed) signed another recovery bill. The country was still limping, but it was limping forward.
Everything felt… almost stable.
Almost.
---
**450 BC – Himalayan Mountains – Snow and Silence**
The wind screamed across the peaks like it had a personal grudge.
Brakash, wrapped in thick furs and old scars, trudged through waist-deep snow with his polar bear, **Nanuq**, lumbering beside him. The bear was larger than any natural animal had a right to be, eyes intelligent, breath steaming in heavy clouds.
Then the air in front of them tore open.
It wasn't a portal. It wasn't magic. It was a wound — a vertical rip in reality that flickered between white snow and something that looked like indoor fluorescent lighting and shelves of snacks.
Brakash narrowed his eyes.
Nanuq growled low in his chest.
Curiosity had always been Brakash's worst (and best) trait.
He reached out.
The moment his fingers touched the tear, the mountain vanished.

**Present Day – 6079 – Corner Convenience Store, Willowbrook**
Brakash and Nanuq crashed through a display of energy drinks and bags of chips.
The polar bear roared. The cashier screamed and dropped his phone. A rack of sunglasses toppled. Brakash rolled to his feet in one smooth motion, spear already in hand, staring at the bright lights and the humming refrigerators like they were enemy magic.
Outside, every alarm in Guardians Headquarters lit up at once.
Sasha's voice cut across the main hall.
"Time anomaly. Strong one. Downtown. Right now."
Korg (the stone-skinned titan) and Grug (the rotting but loyal revenant) were already moving toward the exit before she finished the sentence.
Korg cracked his neck.
"Finally. Something simple."
Grug's glowing red eyes brightened.
"Simple never stays simple."
They stepped out into the Willowbrook afternoon, heading toward the convenience store where a man from 450 BC and a very large polar bear had just arrived in the year 6079.
Behind them, the birthday cake sat half-eaten.
The quiet was officially over.
