**Chapter 81: "Epilogue"{81}**
---
Three weeks after the White House burned and the Beast of Gévaudan died, the world tried to pretend it was still the same place.
It wasn't.
Willowbrook High reopened with half its windows still boarded up and a new memorial plaque on the soccer field that no one wanted to look at for too long. The teenagers who had survived walked the halls differently. They moved like people who had already buried versions of themselves.
Kevin Leister sat on the roof most afternoons, Mythical Matrix quiet beneath his shirt. Wyatt sometimes joined him. They didn't talk much. They didn't need to.
Bella's feathers still showed when she got angry. Bandile's telekinesis had grown precise enough to catch falling pencils without looking. Henrik Helsing cleaned his father's rifle every night even though the Beast was gone. Koa's beast spirits slept lighter than before. Lucifer Jr. kept his wings hidden, but the gold light still leaked from his eyes when he laughed too hard.
They were still kids.
They just weren't only kids anymore.
---
At the temporary Guardians headquarters in Zimbabwe, the wounded healed in stages.
Peter Shotstock complained about everything and healed faster because of it. Sasha Moya slept in the command chair more often than her bed. Cain kept the End Blade wrapped in black cloth and refused to explain why it still hummed at night.
Gerald — New God — rarely spoke. When he did, his voice carried the weight of two divinities and none of the arrogance either of them had once worn. He spent long hours staring at the sky, as if waiting for it to answer.
Gideon sat alone more than anyone liked.
Ryan's body had been placed in a stasis pod the night he died. Gideon visited it every morning and every night. He never cried where people could see him. He just sat there with the VIREX data drive in his pocket and the memory of three gunshots looping behind his eyes.
On the twenty-second night, the temperature in the medical wing dropped without warning.
A figure stepped out of the shadows between the pods. Tall. Barefoot. Skin the colour of old ash and deep earth. Eyes like open graves that had decided to keep watching.
**Tartarus.**
The ancient power that ruled the deepest places beneath every underworld. The one who could reach into death and pull things back if the price was paid.
Gideon stood slowly.
Tartarus looked at Ryan's still form, then at Gideon.
"You owe a debt already," the ancient being said. His voice sounded like stone grinding against stone. "But this one… this one I will return. Not for you. For the shape of what comes next."
He placed one long-fingered hand on the stasis pod.
Darkness poured out of him and into Ryan's chest.
Ryan's back arched. A long, broken gasp tore out of his lungs. Machines screamed. The pod cracked open from the inside.
Ryan fell forward into Gideon's arms, coughing, alive, eyes wide with the memory of nothing.
Gideon held him so tightly it looked like he might break him again.
"You're okay," Gideon whispered, over and over. "You're okay. You're okay."
Ryan's voice was raw.
"Did we win?"
Gideon didn't answer right away.
Outside, the night was quiet.
For now.

Far beneath every living world, in the grey-and-iron realm of **Purgatory**, something ancient shifted.
A hairline fracture had appeared in the boundary that kept the realm sealed. It was small. Almost polite. But it was growing.
On a throne of black iron and forgotten names, the Lord of Purgatory opened his eyes.
**Hades** rose slowly. The shadows in the hall bowed without being told. The dead who still remembered how to kneel did so.
He looked at the fracture glowing faintly in the distance, then smiled for the first time in centuries.
"My rule," he said, voice rolling across the endless grey like distant thunder, "is about to begin."
The fracture widened another inch.
Somewhere above, in the world of the living, a few people felt a sudden chill and did not know why.
The war they had just survived was already becoming a story.
The next one had started writing itself in the dark.
