**Chapter 85: "Gates, Ghosts, and the Baku"(85)**
**Volume 5 – Exodus**
---
The reinforced doors of Guardians Headquarters did not open.
They *folded*.
Reality peeled back like wet paper and **Hades** stepped through the tear, barefoot, skin the colour of old ash and deep earth, eyes like open graves that had decided to keep watching. The air pressure dropped. Every light in the hall flickered. Nanuq the polar bear rose with a low, earth-shaking growl. Peter's hand went to the End Blade. Kevin's Mythical Matrix ignited under his shirt in pure defensive instinct.
Wyatt stood frozen beside him.
Hades's voice was the sound of soil falling on a coffin lid.
"The Child of Humanity. The Rampager. And the little illusionist who still thinks he can hide the truth."
His gaze locked on **Nathan Moya**.
Nathan's smile was sharp and brittle. "Took you long enough, old man."
The two of them moved at the same time.
Nathan's Mind Labyrinth snapped open—walls of shifting glass and false corridors trying to swallow Hades whole. Hades simply walked through them. Every illusion shattered against his presence like cheap mirrors. He swung one ash-coloured arm and the entire left side of the hall *aged* a hundred years in a second. Wood rotted. Metal rusted. Nathan barely rolled clear, blood already running from his nose.
Kevin and Wyatt charged together. The rest of the teenagers scrambled into position.
**Hikoru Jinshi** the Kitsune and **Kenshi Yung** burst through the side entrance at that exact moment, both still smelling of mountain training and blood. Hikoru's nine spectral tails flared behind him in brilliant gold and crimson. Kenshi's dual blades were already drawn, eyes hard.
"We're back," Kenshi barked. "What the hell did we miss?"
"Everything," Bandile Hardere answered without looking up.
Most of the teenagers were already in the hall. Bella stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Bangu, feathers half-manifested. Jackson's mist coiled protectively around Sally. Ignis and Lancelot took the high ground on the second-floor railing, flames and silver light already forming. Carlton, Amadou, Koa, Zayelle, Amon, Lil Micah, Jayden Lautalo—almost the entire young roster filled the space, weapons and powers ready.
Kevin's voice cut through the chaos. "Protect Wyatt. Hades came for the Child of Humanity."
Wyatt's hands trembled, but he didn't run.
---
Far away, in the further mountains of Mysteria, **Drevon A Lithgokong** leapt from peak to peak like a living spear. Each landing cracked stone. Each jump carried him higher into the thin, freezing air. The Gates of the Xeno Clan rose ahead—massive black stone doors carved with the clan's ancient sigil.
He walked straight through them.
The temple courtyard was silent until his uncle's voice boomed across the stones.
"You left without permission again, boy."
Drevon didn't slow. "I went looking for answers. Something's tearing the realms open."
His uncle—broad, scarred, eyes like chips of frozen iron—stood up from the high seat. "You do not leave the mountain without the clan's blessing. You do not speak back."
Drevon opened his mouth to answer.
The punch came like a landslide.
It drove him into the stone floor hard enough to spider-web the tiles. Blood filled his mouth. Around the edges of the courtyard his siblings watched.
**Baldur Xeno** — power: Absolute Density Control. He could make any part of his body denser than mountain core or light enough to float.
**Adeya Xeno** — power: Echo Mirage. She could leave perfect after-images that fought and bled and screamed while the real her moved elsewhere.
**Mick Xeno** — power: Vein of the World. He could sense and manipulate the magnetic lines under the earth, pulling metal or shattering stone from kilometres away.
**Jean Xeno** — power: Quiet Extinction. Anything she touched for more than three seconds began to forget how to exist—memories, then matter, then name.
They said nothing. They only watched their brother climb back to his feet, jaw clenched.
Drevon sat at the long table in silence, anger radiating off him like heat. A bowl of thick mountain soup was placed in front of him. He drank it in three long swallows, stood, and walked out without another word.
The forest beyond the temple was dark and old. White-blue light pulsed between the trees—soft, wrong, familiar. The same colour as the White-Blue Heart Pillar. Drevon reached out and touched it.
The world folded.
He slammed down onto the hood of a moving car in the middle of a rain-slick Willowbrook street. The vehicle skidded. The driver—an ordinary-looking man in a soaked coat—stared through the cracked windshield with pure disbelief.
"I have never seen something as strange as you are," the man said.
Then he started laughing. Hard, almost hysterical laughter, like the universe had finally broken in a way he could not process.
Drevon climbed off the hood, rain already soaking into his clan robes, and the man kept laughing as distant sirens began to wail.
---
Back inside Headquarters the battle between Hades and Nathan Moya tore the main hall apart. Nathan's illusions grew more desperate—false versions of Kevin, of Wyatt, of the entire team trying to confuse the ancient power. Hades simply unmade them one by one. Every step he took aged the floor into dust.
Kevin and Wyatt fought side by side, Matrix and pure human will holding the line. Hikoru's kitsune fire carved burning fox-sigils into the air. Kenshi moved like a silver blur between Hades's strikes. Ignis rained controlled solar flares from above while Lancelot's silver spears pinned the edges of the battlefield.
In a side room that still had a door, **Bandile Hardere** and his zombie girlfriend **Serenity** had locked themselves away from the chaos for a few stolen minutes. Serenity's skin was cool and faintly grey, but her mouth was hungry and alive. Bandile's telekinesis pinned her wrists above her head against the wall while he kissed down her throat. She bit his shoulder hard enough to draw blood and he groaned, pressing closer. Clothes half-off, bodies moving with urgent teenage desperation, they took what little normal they could while the world outside tried to end.
Neither of them noticed the new presence that stepped through a different tear in the hallway.
**Bennett** the Baku arrived without sound.
He was tall, thin, wearing a long coat that seemed woven from dream-smoke and regret. His eyes were the colour of forgotten nightmares. He sniffed the air once and smiled without warmth.
"Takahashi Suguru," he said softly, voice carrying over the battle. "The Oni who thinks he can hide among children. I am Bennett. I am the Baku that eats false gods. I am here to hunt you… or kill you. Either works."
Jayden Lautalo's head snapped up from across the room, the sketch of Takahashi still in his hand. The Oni's name hung in the air like a challenge.
Hades paused mid-strike against Nathan. Kevin and Wyatt locked eyes. The teenagers braced. Outside, Drevon A Lithgokong stood in the rain while a stranger laughed at the impossibility of him. Inside, Bandile and Serenity's muffled sounds mixed with the crash of ancient power against illusion.
The Guardians Headquarters had never held so many overlapping wars at once.
And the night was only getting started.
