Chapter 9 - Abandoned Town

A couple of days have passed since Lia found out that I'm a vampire and we started traveling. It has mostly been quiet with the occasional wildlife in between.

The conversations have been a bit silent for a day or two since she is still thinking about what she wants to ask.

Meanwhile I've just been focusing on the fact that the voices haven't been as present since I fed. There's not much for me to understand about it right now since there's no obvious answers.

"Hey we're getting closer to a town," Lia speaks up.

"A town? I didn't see one on the map you showed me," I respond with a bit of confusion.

"It was abandoned a long time ago so most map makers made the changes in the new ones," Lia says softly.

I give them some credit for actually changing the maps over time since it does take quite a bit of work to draft a map. I'd never go through all of that myself.

Then again, I never used to worry about maps since I didn't have a need for them. The manor was quite big but it didn't require a any guidance like that to navigate the place.

Lukas probably could've used one from time to time with how often he got lost.

Makes me wonder if he is even still alive or if he suffered the same fate as Mom... All of them are dead, at least that's all I can assume for now.

My sister is dead, mom, Lukas, and even dad. Any of the others staying with us probably died as well.

I feel bad for the staff who— Wait the staff weren't vampires like us. I remember hearing Mom and Dad speaking about this since she was against the idea of having human staff.

But regardless they ended up being our staff for years... So obviously the discussion ended in favor of keeping them.

What if they brought the hunters to us? Would any of them even have a reason to do that to us after everything we did for them over the years?

"What are you thinking about Dante?" Lia asks with some curiosity.

"I'm wondering if my family was outed by our staff," I answer without thinking.

"The staff wasn't made up of vampires?" Lia questions.

"They were human," I respond softly.

She pauses for a moment.

"Not all humans want you dead. I don't see a reason for them to work for the family if they just wanted you dead," Lia says while continuing to walk.

"Inside information. That's all it takes," I reply calmly.

"I guess humans can be quite clever when they want to," Lia says with a bit of shock.

Honestly that is another reason I won't take any chances in the future when I have a new home. Humans will never be within my manor, unless it is Mel.

She could've had me killed the moment the hunters looked my way but she saved me instead.

So it is better to say I'd be more cautious than anything else.

My thoughts fade away as the sight of the abandoned town comes into view. A bunch of run down looking buildings that look as if they come from hundreds of years ago.

The architecture has definitely improved a lot since the time these were built.

"Seems we've reached the town," I say with a laid back tone.

"We should be safe to rest here if needed," Lia responds.

"You can rest while I keep watch. I don't trust anything with the way we were tailed last," I say with more of a serious tone.

"Tailed? We were followed?" Lia questions with a surprised tone.

"Your old group followed us for a bit. I honestly think they were planning on killing both of us with the way they were moving up," I answer calmly.

"Aki really is a scumbag," Lia says with some frustration in her voice.

"I'll kill them next time they follow," I reply without hesitation.

"I wouldn't blame you for doing it... Just try not to let me see it," Lia says with a bit of sadness in her voice.

Seeing people die isn't for everyone, I don't really blame her for saying that. I'm just not too bothered by it since I've seen it enough in my life already.

Killing the humans back at the manor didn't really feel like anything to me though... Does that make me the monster?

At that point I feel like I'm matching their image of us. Just cruel monsters who will kill them to satisfy our hunger. But it isn't like that in the slightest; humans would fight back like we do if they were attacked.

"Dante?" Lia calls out.

"Yeah I won't kill them in front of you if I do run into them," I assure her.

"Thank you," Lia says genuinely.

We reach an old armor shop after finishing up that conversation, it isn't looking the greatest but it'll do. Rusted armor, broken swords, and even some old leather armor sits around here.

I push open the door and peek into the shop itself. Everything is quite empty with no signs of life in here in god knows how long.

With that I take advantage to set-up a small spot for Lia to rest for a little while.

"You can rest here while I keep an eye on everything," I speak quietly.

"Thank you. I definitely could use the rest," Lia replies with a grateful tone.

She gets comfortable in the spot I made for her and I quickly glance around for the best spot to sit. Eventually I realize it is across the room on the counter where I can the entire place clearly.

An hour goes by....

If I want to give my kind a chance... I'll need to rebuild everything. Maybe making my own kingdom could be the opportunity I'm looking for.

Or I guess a capital that is purely for us, with some exceptions of course. There will still be quite a lot of bloodshed since humans are stubborn.

I'll also have to turn people, something I really hate the thought of doing.
