Mateo's POV
I had thought the summit attack was bad.
I was wrong.
Two days after the summit, humans hit a neutral pack on the western border. The Riverside Pack, led by Alpha James, the same wolf who'd warned Aria at the original Council summit that she needed to watch her back.
By the time we got there, it was too late.
The entire pack compound was destroyed. Buildings burned to the ground, bodies everywhere. Men, women, children. The humans hadn't discriminated. They'd killed everyone.
"F**k," Zayn breathed beside me. "They didn't even spare the pups."
I walked through the carnage, trying not to look at the small bodies. Trying not to think about how this could have been Silvermoon. Could have been any of us.
Alpha James was still alive, barely. We found him in the wreckage of what used to be his house.
He'd been shot multiple times with silver bullets, and wolfsbane had been pumped into the ventilation system.
