Chapter 100 - Chapter 101: The Gears of War and the Vane’s Limit

Chapter 101: The Gears of War and the Vane's Limit

The air in the bunker was thick with the scent of copper and old dust. Ren's breathing was heavy, his eyes fixed on his trembling, bandaged left hand. He began to stand up, his jaw set in a grim line that signaled he was ready to walk into the jaws of death alone.

"Are you insane, Ren?!" Mina's voice cut through the silence like a whip. She stepped in front of him, blocking the heavy iron door of the bunker. "If you go there now, in your condition, you won't just die—you'll be handing Spero everything he wants on a silver platter. You can barely hold a fork, let alone a blade!"

Ren didn't look at her. He stared at the door. "I'm not taking you, Mina. This isn't your fight. Spero told me to bring you, but I'd rather burn in the lowest pit of hell than hand you over to that snake. I'm going alone. I'll find a way to get Hana out."

"Go alone and do what? Bleed on them?" Mina shouted, her frustration boiling over. She grabbed his shoulders, forcing him to look at her. "Hosh mein aao, Ren! You're thinking like a victim, not a survivor. If you walk out that door, you're dead. But if you listen to me, we can save Hana and make sure Spero never sees the light of day again."

Ren's gaze flickered. "Why are you doing this? Why are you risking your life for my sister?"

Mina's expression softened, but her eyes remained firm. "Hana is your sister, yes. But she became my friend the moment she shared her stories with me. She's innocent, Ren. But you aren't the only one who wants to protect her. I have a plan—a way to bypass Spero's sensors and hit them where it hurts. I'm not a Vaner, but I know this bunker better than anyone. There are things here... tools that my father kept hidden."

The Reach of Onyx: The Mechanical Legion

While Ren and Mina argued in the shadows of the underground, the rest of the world was moving toward a catastrophe of a different kind.

In the frozen north, far beyond the borders of Athelgard, lies the Onyx Reach. It is a land of steel and steam, where the sky is perpetually grey from the smoke of a thousand factories. Here, the ground does not hum with Vane energy. Instead, it vibrates with the mechanical thrum of industry.

Inside the Great Hangar of the Onyx Military District, rows upon rows of Knightmare Frames stood in silent, terrifying formation. These were not creatures of magic, but giants of engineering—humanoid robots standing fifteen feet tall, their heavy armor plated in reinforced obsidian. Pilots in tactical flight suits climbed into the cockpits located in the "humps" on the machines' backs.

"Status report!" a high-ranking General barked, his voice echoing off the metal rafters.

"The 4th Battalion is ready, sir," a technician replied, adjusting a hydraulic valve on a Knightmare's leg. "The Knightmare Frames are fully fueled. The 'Landspinner' propulsion systems are calibrated for high-speed desert combat."

The mood in Onyx Reach was one of cold, calculated fury. Their King had been assassinated three weeks ago, and every piece of evidence—planted or not—pointed to their long-time rivals: The Iron Archipelago.

"The Archipelago thinks they can kill our Sovereign and hide behind their sea walls," the General growled. "They don't realize that our technology has surpassed their wildest dreams. We will march through the neutral zones. We will crush their defenses. Onyx Reach will not rest until the Archipelago is a graveyard of rusted iron."

The Iron Archipelago: The Floating Fortress

Across the vast, turbulent oceans, The Iron Archipelago was responding in kind. Unlike the industrial sprawl of Onyx, the Archipelago was a series of connected floating platforms and artificial islands. Here, too, the Vane was absent.

In the Archipelago's naval yards, their own version of Knightmare Frames were being loaded onto massive carrier ships. These models were sleek, designed for amphibious warfare, equipped with high-vibration blades and shoulder-mounted railguns.

The two nations were on the brink of a world war, a conflict that threatened to engulf the entire continent. And at the heart of their technological advancement lay a simple, geographical truth.

The Science of the Vane: The Petrified Boundary

To the people of Athelgard, the Vane was life. It was the energy that allowed them to cast spells, power their cities, and enhance their bodies. But the Vane was a fickle god.

The source of all Vane energy was The Petrified Land, a mysterious, jagged wasteland located close to the heart of Athelgard. Because of this proximity, Athelgard remained a nation of mages and warriors, stunted in their technological growth because they relied too heavily on the "crutch" of magic.

But the Vane had limits.

It was an atmospheric energy, sensitive to the environment. In the extreme cold of the Onyx Reach, Vane energy would crystallize and "freeze," becoming inert and useless. In the scorching volcanic heat of the distant southern deserts, it would evaporate, dissipating into the air before it could be harnessed.

Furthermore, Vane energy did not travel well. Like a radio signal that loses strength with distance, the further one moved from The Petrified Land, the weaker the Vane became. Beyond a certain point, a Vaner was no different from an ordinary human.

Vane energy was also notoriously volatile. If compressed too tightly or exposed to certain gasses, it would ignite, causing devastating fires—a constant danger that made large-scale industrialization in Athelgard nearly impossible.

Because Onyx Reach and The Iron Archipelago existed far beyond the "Vane Zone," they were forced to innovate. They turned to physics, chemistry, and mechanics. While Athelgard focused on the power of the soul, the outer nations focused on the power of the machine.

As a result, the Onyx Reach and the Iron Archipelago were decades ahead of Athelgard in terms of weaponry, transportation, and infrastructure. They didn't need magic when they had the Knightmare Frames.

Back in the Bunker

Ren looked at Mina, the realization of the world's scale finally hitting him. He had spent his whole life fighting ghouls and traitors in the alleys of Sector 7, but out there, entire armies of steel were preparing to collide.

"The world is changing, Ren," Mina said, her voice quiet but steady. "Athelgard thinks it's the center of the universe because of the Vane. But Spero... Spero knows the truth. He's using the Kara Group to bridge the gap between magic and machine. If he succeeds, he won't just control the King—he'll control the future."

Ren looked at his bandaged hand. The Vane energy crackled weakly around his burnt knuckles. "Three days," he whispered. "We have three days to become more than just mages. We have three days to become monsters."

Mina nodded, reaching for a hidden latch on the bunker floor. "Then let's start with my father's secret stash. If we're going to a massacre, we might as well be the ones holding the biggest guns."
