Chapter 99 - Chapter 100: The Queen’s Gambit and the King’s Fate

Chapter 100: The Queen's Gambit and the King's Fate

The silence that followed the click of the phone was heavier than the stone walls of the bunker. Ren stood motionless, the receiver still in his hand, his knuckles white against the black plastic. The air felt thin, as if the oxygen was being sucked out of the room by the weight of Spero's ultimatum.

Mina stepped closer, her eyes searching Ren's pale, sweat-streaked face. "Ren? What happened? Was it about Hana? Is she... is she okay?"

Ren didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the wooden chair and collapsed into it, his bandaged left hand resting uselessly in his lap. The burning sensation in his wrist was nothing compared to the cold dread freezing his heart.

"Ren, talk to me!" Mina sat on the floor in front of him, grabbing his good hand. "Your face... it looks like you've seen a ghost. Tell me what's wrong. Maybe I can help."

Ren looked at her, his one eye filled with a mixture of agony and protective rage. "Hana has been kidnapped, Mina. Spero has her."

Mina's breath hitched. "What? How? She was at Prince Go's estate! How could they get past his security? Ren, you're joking, right?"

"I wish I was," Ren whispered, his voice cracking. "That was Spero on the phone. He has her strapped to a chair. He's given me seventy-two hours."

Mina stood up, her mind already racing through tactical maneuvers. "What does he want? Money? The Vane energy research? Whatever it is, we'll find a way to give it to him and get her back."

Ren looked away, unable to meet her gaze. "He doesn't want money, Mina. He wants you."

The room went deathly silent.

"He wants to trade," Ren continued, the words feeling like shards of glass in his throat. "He told me if I hand you over to him at the wooden house near the clearing, he'll let Hana go. If I don't... he'll kill her."

The Obsidian Throne: Spero's Grand Design

Far across the sector, in the heart of the Kara Group's hidden command center, Spero stood before a massive holographic map of Athelgard. Behind him, his elite squad stood in silent formation. On a raised platform to the side, Hana sat bound and gagged, her eyes darting in terror.

"Lord Spero," one of his lieutenants stepped forward, his voice hushed. "I understand wanting Vority back, but why the girl? Why Mina Kimo? She is just a student, an accomplice. Is she worth the risk of a confrontation?"

Spero turned, a thin, razor-sharp smile cutting across his face. He walked over to the map, pointing to the Royal Palace at the center of the Inner City.

"You see only a girl," Spero said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "I see a key. Mina is the daughter of Master Kimo—the greatest Vane instructor the Academy has ever seen. Kimo is a man of tradition, of honor... but even honor bows to the love of a father. If we have Mina, we have Kimo."

Spero paced the room, his eyes gleaming with ambition. "Kimo knows things that no one else does. He knows the King's private schedules. He knows the weaknesses of the Royal Guard. He knows which members of the King's family are vulnerable to influence. If we hold Mina's life over his head, Kimo will become our ultimate spy. He will tell us when the King is alone. He will tell us how to bypass the palace's magical barriers."

The lieutenant's eyes widened. "You want to assassinate King Zero?"

"Assassinate? No," Spero chuckled. "I want to replace him. And once Kimo has given us everything—once he has helped us remove the King—we will have no more use for him. Or his daughter."

Spero leaned down, looking directly into Hana's tear-filled eyes. "Ren thinks this is a simple trade. He thinks he can save one and lose the other. But my plan is much more... efficient. Once Ren brings Mina to the wooden house, we will take the girl. Then, we will kill Ren. Then, we will kill the sister. And finally, when the King is dead, we will kill Kimo and Mina. A clean sweep. No witnesses. No loose ends. Only the Kara Group will remain."

The Martyr's Choice

Back in the bunker, Mina was standing by the window, staring out into the dark forest. She didn't look afraid. She looked resolved.

"Then it's settled," Mina said, turning back to Ren. "We go. You hand me over, get Hana, and get out of the sector. Once she's safe, I'll find a way to escape. i know i am not a vaner but I'm not helpless."

"No!" Ren roared, slamming his good fist onto the table. The force of it made the bandages on his other hand seep with fresh blood. "I am not trading your life for hers! Have you forgotten that your father is already being manipulated? Spero doesn't keep his word, Mina. He's a monster."

Mina walked over to him, kneeling once more. "Ren, look at me. Hana is innocent. She's paralyzed, she's suffered enough because of this world. You can't let her die because of me. I chose to break you out of jail. I chose this life. She didn't."

Ren grabbed her shoulders, his gaze intense. "And I chose to protect you the moment you stepped into that courtyard. You think I can live with myself knowing I gave you to a man who will use you to destroy your own family? You think Hana would ever forgive me if she knew her life cost yours?"

Ren stood up, his breathing heavy, his Vane energy starting to crackle around his injured hand. The pain was immense, but he used it to fuel his resolve.

"I have three days," Ren said, his voice turning into the cold, mechanical tone of the Butcher of Sector 7. "Three days to heal this hand. Three days to find where Go is and why he failed. And three days to plan a way to kill Spero and his entire team."

"Ren, you're injured!" Mina protested. "You can barely move your fingers!"

"Then I'll fight with my teeth if I have to," Ren growled. "I am not a victim anymore, Mina. And neither are you. We aren't going to that wooden house for a trade. We're going there for a massacre. Spero wants a monster? I'll show him the one he created."

Mina looked at him, and for the first time, she saw it—the absolute, unshakeable will of a man who had already died once and had nothing left to fear.
