Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 — Target Acquired

Alexander Kazafi did not believe in coincidence.

Not in medicine.

Not in people.

And certainly not in situations that repeated themselves with just enough variation to seem harmless.

---

The next morning began like any other.

Rounds at seven. Reports at eight. Consultations stacked neatly into the hours that followed. The hospital returned to its usual rhythm, and Alexander slipped back into it with practiced ease.

Outwardly, nothing had changed.

Internally—

Everything had.

---

Sergei Antonov.

The name had settled somewhere in the back of his mind, not intrusive but persistent, like a detail waiting to become relevant. Alexander hadn't asked more questions after the conversation with Vladimir. Not because he wasn't curious.

But because he understood something important:

The answers wouldn't come easily.

And pushing too fast would only complicate things further.

---

Still—

He remained alert.

---

"Doctor Kazafi," a nurse called, catching up to him near the corridor. "You have a visitor again."

---

Alexander stopped.

---

Again.

---

"…Where?" he asked.

---

"Cafeteria this time," she replied. "He said it would be more… comfortable."

---

That was enough.

---

Alexander didn't show any reaction, but his mind sharpened instantly.

He didn't ask who.

He already knew.

---

The cafeteria was quieter than usual, the mid-morning lull leaving only a handful of staff scattered across tables. The scent of coffee lingered in the air, mixed with the low hum of distant conversation.

And there—

Sitting casually at a corner table—

Was Sergei Antonov.

---

He looked entirely out of place and completely at ease at the same time.

One arm rested along the back of the chair, posture relaxed, expression mildly amused—as if he were simply waiting for a friend rather than intruding into a controlled environment.

---

His eyes lifted the moment Alexander entered.

---

"…Doctor," he greeted smoothly.

---

Alexander walked toward him, each step measured.

"You were told to leave."

---

Sergei smiled faintly. "I was. That doesn't mean I agreed."

---

Alexander stopped across from him.

"This is a hospital," he said calmly. "You're not authorized to be here."

---

"And yet," Sergei replied, gesturing lightly around them, "no one has stopped me."

---

That—

Was concerning.

---

Alexander's gaze sharpened slightly.

"What do you want?"

---

Sergei leaned forward just a fraction, resting his elbows on the table.

"You."

---

Direct.

Unapologetic.

---

Alexander didn't react.

"For what purpose?"

---

Sergei chuckled softly. "I appreciate efficiency. Very well—I'm curious."

---

"About?"

---

"You," Sergei repeated. "A doctor who speaks to Vladimir Volkov without fear. Who argues with him. Who doesn't step back."

---

"That's not unusual," Alexander said.

---

Sergei's smile widened slightly.

"…No," he said. "It is."

---

Silence stretched between them.

---

Alexander remained standing.

"I don't have time for curiosity," he said. "State your actual purpose."

---

Sergei's expression shifted—just slightly.

Less amused.

More focused.

---

"Fine," he said. "Let's be clear, then."

---

A pause.

---

"You're close to him."

---

Alexander's answer came immediately.

"No."

---

Sergei tilted his head.

"…You're important to him."

---

"That's an assumption."

---

"It's an observation."

---

Another pause.

---

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"You're wasting your time."

---

"Am I?" Sergei asked.

---

Then—

Without warning—

He reached across the table.

---

Not to grab.

Not to threaten.

---

But to pick up Alexander's ID badge, which hung loosely from his coat.

---

The contact was brief.

But deliberate.

---

Alexander's hand moved instantly, pulling it back.

---

"Don't touch that," he said.

---

Sergei's smile didn't fade.

"…Reflexes," he noted. "Good."

---

Alexander's gaze hardened.

"You're overstepping."

---

"And you're reacting," Sergei replied calmly. "Interesting."

---

Before Alexander could respond—

A chair scraped sharply against the floor.

---

Both men turned.

---

Vladimir Volkov stood a few feet away.

---

He hadn't raised his voice.

He hadn't rushed in.

---

But the shift in the air—

Was immediate.

---

Cold.

Heavy.

Final.

---

"…I told you not to come back."

---

Sergei leaned back in his chair, completely unfazed.

"And I told you I don't follow instructions."

---

Vladimir's gaze flicked briefly to Alexander.

Then back to Sergei.

---

"Leave."

---

The word carried more weight this time.

Less patience.

Less restraint.

---

Sergei studied him for a moment.

Then—

"…You're tense," he observed.

---

No response.

---

"…That's new," Sergei continued. "I don't think I've ever seen you this—"

---

"Leave," Vladimir repeated.

---

This time—

There was no room for interpretation.

---

Silence fell across the cafeteria.

Even the distant conversations had quieted, people instinctively sensing something was wrong.

---

Sergei exhaled lightly, standing up.

"…Fine," he said. "For now."

---

He glanced at Alexander one last time.

"…We'll talk again, Doctor."

---

Then he walked out.

---

The moment he was gone—

The pressure in the room didn't disappear.

---

It shifted.

---

Because now—

It was focused on Alexander.

---

"…You shouldn't have come here alone."

---

Alexander turned to Vladimir, expression controlled.

"I didn't invite him."

---

"That doesn't matter."

---

"It does," Alexander replied. "You're treating this like I made a choice."

---

Vladimir stepped closer.

"You did."

---

Alexander frowned slightly.

"How?"

---

"By staying."

---

That—

Wasn't wrong.

---

But it wasn't the point either.

---

"I needed information," Alexander said.

---

"And now you're on his radar."

---

"I already was," Alexander replied calmly. "Yesterday made that clear."

---

Silence.

---

Vladimir's jaw tightened slightly.

---

"…He won't stop," he said.

---

"I figured."

---

Another step closer.

---

"Then stop engaging with him."

---

"No."

---

The answer came without hesitation.

---

Vladimir's gaze darkened.

---

"That's not a suggestion."

---

"And I don't take orders," Alexander replied.

---

The tension spiked.

Sharp.

Immediate.

---

For a moment—

It felt like it might escalate further.

---

Then—

Vladimir exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair.

---

"…You're making this difficult," he said.

---

"And you're making it unclear," Alexander shot back.

---

A pause.

---

Then—

"…He touched you."

---

The words were quiet.

But heavy.

---

Alexander blinked once.

"…Briefly."

---

"That's enough."

---

"It wasn't intentional."

---

"That doesn't matter."

---

Alexander studied him for a moment.

---

There it was.

---

Not just control.

Not just irritation.

---

Something sharper.

---

"…You're reacting," Alexander said.

---

Vladimir's gaze snapped back to him.

---

"I'm responding to a threat."

---

"No," Alexander said calmly. "You're responding to something else."

---

Silence.

---

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

---

Then—

"…You don't understand," Vladimir said.

---

"Then explain it."

---

"I already did."

---

"No," Alexander replied. "You warned me. You didn't explain why it matters this much."

---

A pause.

---

Then—

For the first time—

Vladimir hesitated.

---

Just slightly.

---

"…Because he doesn't touch things that aren't useful to him," he said.

---

Alexander's gaze sharpened.

---

"And you think I am?"

---

Vladimir didn't answer immediately.

---

Because the answer—

Was already clear.

---

"…Yes."

---

Silence.

---

Not tense.

Not explosive.

---

Just—

Real.

---

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"…Then we deal with it," he said.

---

Vladimir frowned slightly.

"We?"

---

"Yes."

---

"No," Vladimir said immediately. "You stay out of it. I handle it."

---

"That's not how this works anymore," Alexander replied.

---

A pause.

---

Then—

"…You're involving yourself in something you can't control."

---

Alexander held his gaze.

"I don't need to control it. I need to understand it."

---

Another pause.

---

Then—

"…You're not backing down."

---

"No."

---

"…Even now."

---

"Especially now."

---

Silence settled again.

---

But this time—

It felt different.

---

Because now—

There was no denying it.

---

Alexander was involved.

---

Not by choice.

Not by intention.

---

But by circumstance.

---

And Vladimir—

Couldn't keep him out of it anymore.

---

"…Stay close to me," Vladimir said finally.

---

Alexander raised an eyebrow slightly.

"That again?"

---

"Yes."

---

"That's not a solution."

---

"It is," Vladimir said. "For now."

---

Alexander considered it.

Briefly.

---

"…Temporary," he said.

---

Vladimir nodded once.

"…Temporary."

---

But neither of them believed that.

---

Because the moment had already passed.

---

The line had already been crossed.

---

And there was no going back.
