Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 — Behind Closed Doors

Alexander Kazafi did not like being pulled out of his environment.

The hospital was his ground—structured, controlled, predictable in ways that allowed him to maintain clarity even in chaos. Every hallway, every room, every sound had a place in his mind. It was a system he understood.

Which was exactly why stepping outside of it felt… wrong.

He didn't immediately agree to Vladimir's unspoken request.

After the encounter in the lobby, after the appearance of that unknown man and the tension that followed, Alexander had returned to his duties. He finished his rounds, checked on his patients, signed off reports, and maintained his usual composure.

Outwardly, nothing had changed.

Internally—

That was another matter.

By the time his shift ended, the hospital had quieted into the late evening lull. The fluorescent lights felt dimmer, softer. Conversations were fewer. The rush had faded into a slow, steady rhythm.

Alexander gathered his things, slipped on his coat, and stepped out into the cool night air.

He didn't expect him to be there.

But Vladimir Volkov was leaning against a black car across the street, one hand in his pocket, the other resting casually against the hood. The city lights cast long shadows across his figure, emphasizing his height, his build, the quiet authority in his stance.

He wasn't hiding.

He wasn't subtle.

He was waiting.

Alexander stopped for a brief moment.

Then continued walking.

"You took your time."

Vladimir's voice carried easily across the distance.

Alexander didn't stop until he stood a few steps away.

"I had work," he replied.

Vladimir straightened slightly, his gaze fixed on him.

"You always do."

"That's how jobs work."

A faint flicker of something—amusement, maybe—crossed Vladimir's expression.

"…Get in."

Alexander didn't move.

"No."

A pause.

"I said we would talk," Vladimir said.

"You did," Alexander replied calmly. "You didn't say where."

Another pause.

Then—

"…Fair," Vladimir admitted.

He stepped away from the car, closing the distance between them. Up close, the difference in their presence was even more pronounced. Vladimir's height, his build, the sheer weight of his existence—it would have been overwhelming to anyone else.

But Alexander didn't step back.

"Not here," Vladimir said quietly.

Alexander crossed his arms slightly. "Then explain why I should go anywhere with you."

Vladimir studied him.

Carefully.

"Because you asked for answers," he said. "And I don't give those in public."

Alexander held his gaze.

"You're assuming I trust you enough to follow."

"I'm not," Vladimir replied. "I'm assuming you're curious enough."

Silence.

That—

Wasn't wrong.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"…Ten minutes," he said. "That's all you get."

Vladimir didn't argue.

"Get in."

The car ride was quiet.

The city passed by in blurred lights and distant noise, the hum of the engine filling the space between them. Alexander sat in the passenger seat, posture straight, eyes forward. He didn't ask questions.

Not yet.

Vladimir drove.

One hand on the wheel, movements controlled, precise. He didn't speak either.

But the silence wasn't empty.

It was deliberate.

They stopped in front of a building Alexander didn't recognize.

Not a hospital.

Not a public space.

Something else.

"Out," Vladimir said.

Alexander stepped out without hesitation, his gaze scanning the surroundings quickly. Quiet street. Minimal traffic. No obvious signs of activity.

Controlled.

Inside, the building was even more telling.

Clean. Minimal. No unnecessary decoration.

Functional.

Vladimir led the way without looking back.

"Sit."

Alexander didn't.

"Talk."

A faint exhale left Vladimir, something close to impatience.

"…Fine."

He turned, leaning slightly against the edge of a table, arms crossing.

"The man you spoke to," he began, "is not someone you should interact with again."

"Name," Alexander said immediately.

A pause.

Then—

"…Sergei Antonov."

---

Alexander filed that away.

"Relation?"

---

Vladimir's jaw tightened slightly.

"…Past business."

---

"That's vague."

---

"It's enough."

---

"No," Alexander said calmly. "It's not."

---

Silence.

---

Vladimir's gaze sharpened.

"You don't need details."

---

"I do," Alexander replied. "He approached me. That makes it relevant."

---

A beat.

Then—

"…He's someone who doesn't respect boundaries," Vladimir said.

---

Alexander raised an eyebrow slightly. "And you do?"

---

That landed.

---

Vladimir's expression didn't change—but something in his posture shifted.

"…I'm telling you to stay away from him," he said.

---

"And I'm asking why."

---

Another pause.

---

Then—

"…Because if he sees you as leverage," Vladimir said slowly, "it becomes a problem."

---

That—

Changed the tone.

---

Alexander's gaze narrowed slightly.

"Leverage?"

---

"Yes."

---

"And why would I be that?"

---

Vladimir didn't answer immediately.

---

Because the answer—

Was obvious.

---

Alexander saw it.

---

"…Because of you," he said.

---

Silence.

---

Vladimir didn't deny it.

---

That was enough.

---

Alexander exhaled slowly, processing.

"So your… situation follows you into my workplace," he said. "Into my interactions. Into my responsibilities."

---

"Yes."

---

"And your solution is for me to 'stay out of it'?"

---

"Yes."

---

Alexander let out a quiet breath.

"That's not realistic."

---

"It is if you choose it."

---

"I don't," Alexander replied.

---

A pause.

---

Then—

"…You should," Vladimir said.

---

Alexander shook his head slightly.

"No. What I should do is understand what I'm dealing with."

---

Vladimir's gaze hardened.

"You don't want to understand that world."

---

"That's not your decision."

---

"And this isn't your problem."

---

"It became my problem the moment he spoke to me."

---

Silence.

---

The tension rose again.

Not sharp.

Not explosive.

But steady.

---

"You're making this complicated," Vladimir said.

---

"And you're making it unclear," Alexander replied.

---

A beat.

---

Then—

Vladimir pushed off the table, stepping closer.

---

"You don't realize the risk," he said.

---

Alexander didn't move.

"Then explain it."

---

"I already did."

---

"No," Alexander said. "You warned me. That's not the same thing."

---

That—

Shifted something.

---

For a moment, Vladimir just looked at him.

Really looked.

---

Then—

"…You don't scare easily," he said.

---

"No."

---

"…Even when you should."

---

"Especially then."

---

The same answer.

The same certainty.

---

A faint, almost frustrated breath left Vladimir.

"…You're not going to drop this."

---

"No."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

"…Fine."

---

The word came slower this time.

More deliberate.

---

"If you're involved," Vladimir continued, "then you follow my lead."

---

Alexander's eyes narrowed slightly.

"No."

---

Vladimir's gaze darkened.

---

"That wasn't a request," he said.

---

"And this isn't your territory," Alexander replied calmly. "You don't give me orders."

---

The air shifted.

---

There it was again.

That clash.

---

Vladimir stepped closer.

Close enough now that the difference in their height should have mattered.

But didn't.

---

"You don't understand the stakes," he said quietly.

---

"And you don't understand boundaries," Alexander replied.

---

A pause.

---

Then—

For the briefest moment—

Something almost like a smile touched Vladimir's lips.

---

"…You're difficult," he said.

---

"I've been told."

---

Another pause.

---

Then—

"…Stay near me," Vladimir said.

---

Alexander frowned slightly.

"That's your solution?"

---

"Yes."

---

"That doesn't solve anything."

---

"It does," Vladimir replied. "If you're with me, he won't approach you."

---

Alexander considered that.

Briefly.

---

"…And if I'm not?" he asked.

---

Vladimir's gaze held his.

---

"Then I'll make sure he regrets it."

---

The words were quiet.

But absolute.

---

Alexander studied him for a long moment.

---

Not fear.

Not intimidation.

---

Just… assessment.

---

"…That's not how I handle problems," he said finally.

---

"I know."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

"…But it's how I do."

---

Another pause.

---

And this time—

Alexander didn't argue immediately.

---

Because this—

This was the first real glimpse.

---

Not of power.

Not of control.

---

But of Vladimir's world.

---

And it wasn't clean.

---

It wasn't structured.

---

It wasn't something Alexander could fix with logic or routine.

---

"…This changes things," Alexander said quietly.

---

"Yes," Vladimir replied.

---

Silence settled again.

---

But it wasn't the same as before.

---

Because now—

The line between them had shifted.

---

Not just patient and doctor.

---

Not just tension and defiance.

---

Something else.

---

Something that extended beyond the hospital.

---

And couldn't be ignored anymore.

---

"…Next time," Alexander said finally, "don't let it reach me first."

---

A pause.

---

Then—

"…I won't," Vladimir said.

It wasn't a promise.

But it was close.

And for now—

That was enough.
