Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 — Lines in the Sand

Alexander Kazafi didn't like interruptions that weren't planned.

Hospitals thrived on them sometimes—emergency cases, sudden changes in a patient's condition, unexpected visits from specialists—but there was a rhythm to even chaos, a protocol to follow.

What happened today wasn't part of any protocol.

---

By the time Alexander arrived at the central office to submit his afternoon reports, there was already tension in the air. The receptionist glanced at him nervously, and the usually bustling hallway felt heavier, charged with whispers that stopped when he approached.

---

"Doctor Kazafi," a firm voice called from the administration office.

He turned.

Dr. Emilia Stark, always professional but carrying an unmistakable edge, gestured toward the office door. "You need to see them. Now."

---

Alexander exhaled slowly. "Understood."

He stepped inside.

---

Inside, the office was coldly formal. Dr. Henry Caldwell and Ms. Felicia Moreno, the hospital administrators, sat behind a large oak desk, papers neatly stacked but eyes sharp, evaluating. Their posture said one thing: they were calm, but every second of their attention screamed that the situation had escalated far beyond acceptable boundaries.

---

Alexander closed the door behind him and stood tall, keeping his composure. "You summoned me."

---

Dr. Caldwell cleared his throat. "Yes. Sit, Doctor Kazafi."

Alexander remained standing.

---

"That won't be necessary," Ms. Moreno said smoothly. "We need to clarify some reports. You've had multiple incidents involving a non-staff individual entering restricted areas. Witnesses have confirmed your interactions escalated into confrontations, potentially compromising safety. We need your explanation."

---

Alexander folded his arms lightly. "I've already handled the situations. Patients' safety was never at risk. The individuals involved are no longer present."

---

Dr. Caldwell's expression hardened. "You don't understand. This isn't just protocol violation. You're putting yourself at risk. You're putting others at risk. The fact that security had to intervene—"

---

"I understand," Alexander interrupted calmly. "And measures have been taken."

---

Ms. Moreno leaned forward slightly. "Such measures are insufficient. You cannot dictate how outside threats are managed in a hospital environment. That's not your role."

---

Alexander tilted his head slightly. "I manage patients and my environment responsibly. Outside individuals attempted to threaten me. The security team intervened. The matter is under control."

---

"You're dismissing the gravity of this," Dr. Caldwell snapped. "The hospital cannot tolerate unauthorized physical confrontations, regardless of your intent or your skill. This is serious."

---

Alexander exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair. "I understand the severity. But you are judging the outcome without understanding the variables. This was not negligence. It was situational response."

---

Silence settled briefly.

---

Ms. Moreno's gaze sharpened. "Doctor Kazafi, with all due respect, the board will not tolerate further incidents. You are being formally warned. Any recurrence may result in suspension."

---

Alexander nodded slightly. "I acknowledge the warning."

---

Dr. Caldwell leaned back in his chair, fixing Alexander with a piercing gaze. "Do you understand what it means to be involved with a person like Volkov in this environment? His presence and influence create risk. This isn't theoretical—it's real. His involvement compromises hospital integrity."

---

Alexander's jaw tightened subtly. "I understand the implications. And I also understand the necessity of his protection in relation to the threats I've faced. He intervened to neutralize an immediate danger."

---

Ms. Moreno's eyes narrowed. "And you allowed him in the hospital?"

---

"Yes," Alexander said steadily. "Because without intervention, the threat would have escalated."

---

Dr. Caldwell let out a long exhale, leaning back further. "Doctor Kazafi, are you aware that by involving an outside party, you are now personally liable for any consequence that arises? Patient safety, public perception, legal ramifications—these are no longer theoretical risks. They are immediate."

---

Alexander held their gaze. "I am aware. I do not take this lightly. But I cannot ignore the danger posed by Antonov or others. The hospital's rules are clear, but so are the threats outside its walls. I made a calculated decision to ensure safety."

---

Ms. Moreno's expression softened slightly but her tone remained firm. "We appreciate your commitment to patient care. But your judgment in this situation is being questioned. You must follow strict reporting protocols for any future incidents. Do you understand?"

---

"Yes," Alexander said calmly.

---

Dr. Caldwell pinched the bridge of his nose briefly. "We will continue monitoring the situation. For now, you are cleared to continue your duties, but any recurrence will have consequences."

---

Alexander exhaled slowly, standing upright. "Understood."

---

As he left the administration office, the weight of the conversation lingered. The board and administration had set their boundaries. Clear. Unyielding. Lines in the sand.

---

Outside the office, the hospital atmosphere felt different. Staff watched him a little longer than usual. Whispers followed him through the corridors. Every glance carried curiosity, speculation, concern.

---

He didn't respond.

Alexander didn't need to.

---

By the time he returned to his usual rounds, Vladimir Volkov was waiting.

---

He had not called. Had not sent word. Yet there he stood, near the nurse station, a figure of quiet dominance that drew immediate attention. Staff instinctively stepped aside, allowing him space, though none fully understood why.

---

Alexander approached him cautiously. "You shouldn't be here."

---

Vladimir's gaze flicked toward the administrative office. "I know."

---

"And?" Alexander asked.

---

Vladimir's jaw tightened slightly. "They're trying to draw lines. Set boundaries. Limit my involvement."

---

Alexander shook his head slightly. "This isn't about you."

---

"Not anymore," Vladimir replied. "Now it's about you. And they won't protect you like I will."

---

Alexander's eyes narrowed. "That's not how this works. You can't just dictate rules in a hospital."

---

Vladimir stepped closer. "I don't dictate rules. I protect people."

---

"And I'm not a child."

---

"I don't care," Vladimir said quietly. "You're my priority right now. And that's non-negotiable."

---

The intensity in his tone sent a subtle ripple through the hallway. Staff glanced in their direction, sensing the tension between them.

---

Alexander exhaled slowly, letting it pass. "Temporary," he said finally. "This arrangement is temporary. Once the situation is stabilized, you leave."

---

Vladimir's gaze locked on him. "…Temporary," he agreed. But the subtle edge in his eyes betrayed the lie—they both knew it would last far longer than Alexander wanted to admit.

---

And in that moment, the hospital no longer felt like his own.

---

The staff no longer felt like witnesses to routine work.

---

Because the lines had been drawn, and they were all forced to watch Alexander navigate the impossible—protecting himself, managing a hospital, and contending with a man whose influence extended far beyond the walls.

---

Alexander knew the storm was only beginning.

And Vladimir—Vladimir was ready to meet it head-on.
