Sairis's POV
Loreen rose to his feet too, the movement slow but firm, as if he had already sensed that something was wrong before Sairis spoke.
"You are leaving," he said.
It was not a question.
Sairis nodded once. "I need to get back to my lady. She might be in need of me." he replied.
The words came out quickly, almost too smooth. He knew it was not convincing enough. If Candice truly needed him, Henrietta would have already come looking. But he needed an excuse to leave, and that was the only reason his mind could come up with on short notice.
Loreen arched a brow. "You can do better than that, Sairis." he muttered.
It was obvious Loreen could tell Sairis was searching for an excuse to leave. Sairis did not bother to hide it well enough.
Still, he wondered if Loreen had thought about it too, that they should not be seen together like this. Not in private. Not lingering in quiet halls where anyone could pass by and start talking.
